OBJECTIVE: Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) affect more than one million Americans, predisposing them to a lifetime risk of hemorrhagic stroke and epilepsy. A potential role of the immune response in this disease has not been postulated previously but is compelling given the unique antigenic milieu of CCM lesions with sequestered thrombi and a leaky blood-brain barrier and the numerous examples of immune modulation of angiogenesis in other disease states. OBJECTIVE: Congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) are a group of metabolic diseases due to defects in protein and lipid glycosylation. We searched for the primary defect in 3 children from 2 families with a severe neurological phenotype, including profound developmental delay, intractable epilepsy, progressive microcephaly, severe hypotonia with elevated blood creatine kinase levels, and early fatal outcome. CTCF is a transcriptional repressor of the c-myc gene. Although CTCF has been characterized in some detail, there is very little information about the regulation of CTCF activity. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of a screening programme to identify infants with sickle cell anaemia.
SETTING: A metropolitan university hospital.
METHOD: 4845 (73.3%) newborn cord blood samples from 6271 infants born in the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital over a two year period were tested for the presence of haemoglobinopathies. The patient group comprised approximately 44% white Americans and 51% African Americans. Diagnoses of haemoglobinopathies were established by cellulose acetate (pH 8.6) and citrate agar (pH 6.2) electrophoresis, and thin layer isoelectric focusing.

A new allergen from horse dander, Equ c 5 has been purified. Its biochemical and biophysical properties have been characterized and compared with those of Equ c 1, Equ c 2 and Equ c 4.
