Functional mechanisms, current applications, and future perspectives of dairy products in oral health.

BACKGROUND: Oral diseases affect over 3.5 billion people globally, with dental caries and periodontitis being the most common. Previous studies suggest that dairy products may protect against these conditions through enamel remineralization and antimicrobial effects, but a comprehensive synthesis integrating component profiles, molecular mechanisms, and translational applications has been lacking. This systematic review synthesizes evidence on dairy products and their bioactive components in oral health, clarifies functional mechanisms, current applications, and future directions. METHODS: Pu

Glycyrrhizic acid-loaded biomimetic hybrid liposomes targeting inflammatory cascades and PD-1/PD-L1 pathway to reverse neuroinflammation-driven cognitive decline.

Neuroinflammation is a key pathogenic process in multiple central nervous system (CNS) disorders. It can lead to neuronal injury and cognitive decline through excessive glial activation and aberrant engagement of the programmed cell death protein-1/programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-1/PD-L1) checkpoint axis. To address these pathologies, we engineered a PD-1-enriched macrophage-membrane, lactoferrin-modified, PEGylated, glycyrrhizic-acid-loaded biomimetic hybrid liposome (PMLpGL) for dual, precise modulation of the neuroinflammatory microenvironment. PMLpGL alleviates neuronal inhibitory signaling

Optimization of single- and dual-cycle high-pressure processing to process bovine milk for microbial safety and protein quality.

Bovine milk is a nutritionally rich fluid containing bioactive proteins that support immune function and growth. Traditional thermal pasteurization (72°C for >15 s) ensures microbial safety but degrades heat-sensitive proteins. High-pressure processing (HPP) offers a nonthermal alternative for microbial reduction, yet its effect on protein structure, particularly under applications of multiple pressure cycles, remains underexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of single- and dual-cycle HPP treatments for bacterial inactivation and protein preservation in whole bovine milk an

Increased Urine Excretion of Neutrophil Granule Cargo in Active Proliferative Lupus Nephritis.

KEY POINTS: Neutrophil degranulation participates in glomerular injury in proliferative lupus nephritis. Urine excretion of neutrophil granule proteins is a potential diagnostic for proliferative lupus nephritis. BACKGROUND: Lupus nephritis (LN) occurs in more than half of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, but the cellular and molecular events that contribute to LN are not clearly defined. We reported previously that neutrophil degranulation participates in glomerular injury in mouse models of acute LN. This study tests the hypothesis that glomerular recruitment and subsequent activ

Sebaceous Adenocarcinoma in Parotid Gland of a 65-Year-Old.

Sebaceous adenocarcinoma of the parotid gland is a rare, malignant epithelial neoplasm with focal areas of sebaceous differentiation. A literature search revealed only 34 cases as of December 2020. Our case brings this total to 35. It is characterized as a partially encapsulated neoplasm with predominant areas of basaloid or squamous cells, and variable degrees of sebaceous differentiation. The sebocytes display an immunohistochemical staining pattern of EMA (cytoplasmic vesicles), CD15, lactoferrin, GCDFP-2, and androgen receptor positivity in the sebocytes. Bimodal peaks occur in the third a

Genomic surveillance reveals antibiotic resistance gene transmission via phage recombinases within sheep mastitis-associated Streptococcus uberis.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus uberis is one of the main causative agents of ovine mastitis, however little is known about this global, environmental pathogen and its genomic mechanisms of disease. In this study, we performed genomic analysis on 46 S. uberis isolates collected from mastitis-infected sheep in Sardinia (Italy). RESULTS: Genomes were assigned into lineage clusters using PopPUNK, which found 27 distinct isolate clusters, indicating considerable genetic variability consistent with environmental isolates. Geographic trends were identified including regional linkage of several isolate cl

Liquid PRF Reduces the Inflammatory Response and Osteoclastogenesis in Murine Macrophages.

Macrophage activation and osteoclastogenesis are hallmarks of inflammatory osteolysis and may be targeted by the local application of liquid platelet-rich fibrin (PRF). Liquid PRF is produced by a hard spin of blood in the absence of clot activators and anticoagulants, thereby generating an upper platelet-poor plasma (PPP) layer, a cell-rich buffy coat layer (BC; termed concentrated-PRF or C-PRF), and the remaining red clot (RC) layer. Heating PPP has been shown to generate an albumin gel (Alb-gel) that when mixed back with C-PRF generates Alb-PRF having extended working properties when implan

[Prevalence and specificity of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) in connective tissue diseases].

Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) have specificity for constituents of neutrophil granules. There are two different types of ANCA identifiable by indirect immunofluorescence method. One type produces the cytoplasmic staining pattern (C-ANCA) and the second-perinuclear (P-ANCA). The aim of the study was to evaluate the frequency of ANCA in patients with connective tissue diseases (CTD). Serum samples were obtained from 394 patients suffering from CTD. The patients group consisted of 86 patients with lupus erythematosus systemic (LES) (including 30 with LES accompanied with glomerulon

Patient self-monitoring of oral anticoagulant therapy: potential benefits and implications for clinical practice.

Innate host defence, involving both cellular and humoral mediators, is a prominent function of the human airways. Cellular mediators of innate immunity include dendritic cells, natural killer cells, cytotoxic T cells, macrophages and neutrophils, while humoral mediators of innate immunity consist of components of the epithelial lining fluid (ELF) covering the airways. Microbicidal substances in the ELF can selectively disrupt bacterial cell walls and membranes, sequester microbial nutrients or act as decoys for microbial attachment. Antimicrobial components of airway secretions include lysozym

A review of immunofluorescent patterns associated with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) and their differentiation from other antibodies.

AIM: To describe the neutrophil fluorescent patterns produced by antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) with different antigen specificities, and by other auto- and alloantibodies. BACKGROUND: Most sera from patients with active generalised Wegener's granulomatosis result in diffusely granular cytoplasmic neutrophil fluorescence with internuclear accentuation (cANCA) and proteinase 3 (PR3) specificity. About 80% of the sera from patients with microscopic polyangiitis result in perinuclear neutrophil fluorescence with nuclear extension (pANCA) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) specificity, or a

Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies: major autoantigens, pathophysiology, and disease associations.

Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) are important serological markers for the primary systemic vasculitides, including microscopic polyarteritis and necrotizing crescentic glomerulonephritis. Numerous reports have established the clinical utility of ANCA titer in monitoring disease activity, relapses, and response to treatment. ANCA, detected by indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) assays using patient's serum and ethanol-fixed human neutrophils, produce two common fluorescent staining patterns: cytoplasmic (C-ANCA), involving a 29-kD neutral serine protease termed proteinase 3 (PR3), an

Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies: a still-growing class of autoantibodies in inflammatory disorders.

Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) have been described as sensitive and specific markers for active Wegener's granulomatosis (WG). ANCA in WG produce a characteristic cytoplasmic staining pattern of neutrophils (c-ANCA) and are directed against proteinase 3 (Pr3), a serine protease from the azurophilic granules. c-ANCA, more or less equivalent to anti-Pr3, occur in more than 90% of patients with extended WG, in 75% of patients with limited WG without renal involvement, and in some 40% to 50% of patients with vasculitic overlap syndromes suggestive of WG such as microscopic polyarteri

[Effect of perftoran on the oxidant-antioxidant system in patients with severe trauma and blood loss].

Diminution of reperfusion and re-oxygenation lesions is an important task in the treatment of patients with severe injury and blood loss. From this standpoint the influence of perforan on the condition of the oxidant-antioxidant system was studied in patients with severe combined trauma. The application of perftoran in the early post-trauma period was found to intensify the processes of lipid peroxidation and, simultaneously, to normalize the parameters of the antioxidant-protection system.

Systemic complement activation, lung injury, and products of lipid peroxidation.

Previously we have demonstrated that systemic activation of the complement system after intravenous injection of cobra venom factor (CVF) results in acute lung injury as reflected by increases in the vascular permeability of the lung as well as by morphologic evidence of damage to lung vascular endothelial cells. In using the vascular permeability of the lung as the reference, the current studies show a quantitative correlation between lung injury and the appearance in plasma of lipid peroxidation products (conjugated dienes) as well as increased concentrations of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) an
