Effect of tramadol on extubation response and quality of emergence following Supratentorial surgery: A randomised controlled trial.

Understanding the sources, prevalence, phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of mcr gene-harbouring bacteria (MGHB) in the poultry sector is crucial to supplement existing information. Through this, the plasmid-mediated colistin resistance (PMCR) could be tackled to improve food safety and reduce public health risks. Therefore, we conducted a literature synthesis of potential sources and characteristic occurrence of MGHB recovered from the poultry sector specific to the high-income countries (HICs). Colistin (COL) is a last-resort antibiotic used for treating deadly infections. For more tha

Sulfadiazine, sulfamethazine and sulfachloropyridazine removal using three different porous materials: Pine bark, "oak ash" and mussel shell.

This work focuses on studying the efficacy of three different by-products to adsorb three antibiotics (sulfadiazine, SDZ; sulfamethazine, SMT; sulfachloropyridazine, SCP). These antibiotics can be considered pollutants of the environment when they reach water, as well as in cases where they are spread on soils through irrigation or contained in sewage sludge or livestock manure. In this study, batch-type adsorption/desorption experiments were performed for each of the three sulfonamides, adding 7 different concentrations of the antibiotics, going from 1 to 50 μmol L-1, and with contact time of

Climate change, women's health, and the role of obstetricians and gynecologists in leadership.

Climate change is one of the major global health threats to the world's population. It is brought on by global warming due in large part to increasing levels of greenhouse gases resulting from human activity, including burning fossil fuels (carbon dioxide), animal husbandry (methane from manure), industry emissions (ozone, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide), vehicle/factory exhaust, and chlorofluorocarbon aerosols that trap extra heat in the earth's atmosphere. Resulting extremes of weather give rise to wildfires, air pollution, changes in ecology, and floods. These in turn result in displacemen

Motile aeromonads from farmed and wild freshwater fish in northern Italy: an evaluation of antimicrobial activity and multidrug resistance during 2013 and 2016.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistant bacteria are emerging biological contaminants of the environment. In aquatic ecosystems, they originate mainly from hospitals, livestock manure and private households sewage water, which could contain antimicrobial agents and resistant microorganisms. Aeromonas spp. occur ubiquitously in aquatic environments and they cause disease in fish. Motile aeromonads are also associated with human gastrointestinal and wound infections and fish can act as a transmission route of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) aeromonads to humans. The environmental ubiquity, the natura

[Development of animal husbandry in Groningen in the 18th and 19th century; a broad outline].

This overview is mainly focussed on the clay area forming the northern half of the province. It is the wealthiest and most characteristic part, being cultured since the Middle Ages as testified by the many churches that even small villages were able to construct. About 1700 the province of Groningen enjoyed already a modern economy, fitting in with that of the other coastal areas of Friesland, Zeeland and Holland (the last mentioned was the richest region of the world in the 17th and 18th century). As aspects of modernity at that time can be considered: 1) the use of modern agricultural method

Longitudinal source-sink dynamics of fecal litter and farm indoor environmental resistomes in broiler chicken and Cherry Valley ducks.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance is a major One Health threat, and intensive poultry systems function as amplifiers. Although broilers and ducks are reared under similarly controlled conditions, their microecologies diverge. Integrated, longitudinal source-sink analyses quantifying overlap and directional flux between host-associated and environmental resistomes remain scarce. A two-year (2022–2024), longitudinal, commercial-scale comparison was undertaken across 15 stocking cycles under harmonized husbandry in Ross 308 broiler and Cherry Valley duck. Parallel shotgun metagenomics profiled

Effects of Oligomeric Ultrafine-Nano Hydrogen Water on Laying Performance, Egg Quality, Nutrient Composition, and Intestinal and Reproductive Responses in Late-Laying Hens.

This study evaluated the effects of oligomeric ultrafine-nano hydrogen water (OUHW) on production performance, egg quality, egg nutrient deposition, systemic metabolism, intestinal barrier function, and reproductive status in late-laying hens. Unlike conventional hydrogen-rich water, which primarily delivers molecular hydrogen dissolved in water, OUHW integrates oligomeric water with ultrafine-nano-sized hydrogen bubbles, providing a distinct physicochemical form of hydrogen-water intervention. A total of 288 healthy 67-week-old Jingfen No. 8 laying hens were assigned to 2 treatments with 6 in

Distribution of Staphylococcus chromogenes and Mammaliicoccus sciuri across cows, farm environment, and workers in 3 Chinese dairy herds with distinct bedding systems.

Non-aureus staphylococci and mammaliicocci (NASM) are among the most frequently detected pathogens in bovine mastitis, yet their dominant species, distribution across the cow-human-environment interface, within-herd population structure, and potential epidemiologic links remain incompletely described in China. We conducted a cross-sectional survey in 3 commercial Chinese dairy herds using distinct bedding systems (manure solids [MNS], new sand [NS], and sawdust). Samples were collected from lactating cows and milk-fed calves (multiple body sites), mastitic milk (clinical and subclinical), the

Antimicrobial Resistance Profiles of Bacteria Isolated from the Animal Health Sector in Zambia (2020-2024): Opportunities to Strengthen Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance and Stewardship Programs.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global health threat that undermines treatment in humans and animals. In Zambia, where livestock production underpins food security and livelihoods, AMR challenges are aggravated by limited surveillance, weak diagnostics, and poor regulatory enforcement, facilitating the spread of resistant pathogens across the human-animal-environment interface. This study aims to analyse AMR patterns of bacterial isolates collected from Zambia's animal health sector between 2020 and 2024, to generate evidence that informs national AMR surveilla

Effects of precision feeding and functional amino acid supplementation on Salmonella-challenged growing pigs under poor housing conditions.

Immune system activation impairs pigs' growth and increases population variability. Individual precision feeding (IPF) takes into account the variability between pigs and improves the efficiency of nutrient utilization. Additionally, functional amino acid (FAA) supplementation reduces the negative impacts of immune system activation. However, the combined effect of IPF and FAA supplementation for immune-challenged pigs remains to be evaluated. We hypothesized that the combined effect of IPF and FAA supplementation would increase nutrient efficiency and reduce the effects of immune activation o

Isolation and characterization of Salmonella phages for controlling bacterial infections.

INTRODUCTION: The rise of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella enterica poses a significant threat to public health, veterinary medicine, and food safety. Bacteriophages offer a promising alternative to antibiotics due to their host specificity and ability to lyse bacteria without disrupting commensal microbiota. METHODS: In this study, twelve Salmonella-specific phages were isolated from diverse environmental sources across China. Specifically, DN01 originated from livestock manure in Shanxi Province (Northwest China), DN03 from poultry wastewater in Suizhou, Hubei Province (Central China),

Management factors associated with bovine respiratory disease in preweaned calves on California dairies: The BRD 100 study.

The objective of this cross-sectional study was to determine how management practices on California dairies may be associated with bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in preweaned calves. A convenience sample of 100 dairies throughout California, providing a study population of 4,636 calves, were visited between May 2014 and April 2016. During each farm visit, in-person interviews with the herd manager or calf caretaker were conducted to collect information about herd demographics, maternity pen, colostrum and calf management, herd vaccinations, and dust abatement. A random sample of preweaned ca

Risk of pregnancy-related hypertension within five years of exposure to bacteria-contaminated drinking water.

Exposure to Escherichia coli O157:H7 may result in subclinical kidney injury manifesting as hypertension during pregnancy. We evaluated the risk of pregnancy-related hypertension (PRH) among previously healthy females from the Walkerton Health Study, Canada (2002-6), who conceived within five years of exposure to bacteria-contaminated drinking water. Ontario Ministry of Health Antenatal forms were used to determine outcomes and risk factors. PRH was defined as any systolic or diastolic blood pressure (BP) > or =140 mm Hg and > or =90 mm Hg, respectively. Chronic and gestational hypertension we

Potential infection of grazing cattle via contaminated water: a theoretical modelling approach.

Wastewater discharge and agricultural activities may pose microbial risks to natural water sources. The impact of different sources can be assessed by water quality modelling. The aim of this study was to use hydrological and hydrodynamic models to illustrate the risk of exposing grazing animals to faecal pollutants in natural water sources, using three zoonotic faecal pathogens as model microbes and fictitious pastures in Sweden as examples. Microbial contamination by manure from fertilisation and grazing was modelled by use of a hydrological model (HYPE) and a hydrodynamic model (MIKE 3 FM),

Enhanced laboratory-based surveillance of Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157 in The Netherlands.

The aim of this study was to analyse the results of a programme in the Netherlands for enhanced surveillance of Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O157. In this programme, implemented in January 1999, all laboratories report positive cases to the public health services and submit isolates for typing to the reference laboratory. Public health services collect clinical and risk factor information of patients, using a standardised questionnaire. Results were analysed for the first two and a half years of the programme. In February 2000, a questionnaire was sent to all laboratories to a
