Patients with progressive posttraumatic myelomalacic myelopathy (PPMM), or tethered cord syndrome, present with symptoms and signs similar to those observed in case of progressive posttraumatic cystic myelopathy, that is, sensorimotor function deterioration, local and/or radicular pain, increased spasticity, increased autonomic dysreflexia, and sphincter dysfunction. The authors investigated surgical outcomes of untethering combined with expansive duraplasty. Forty patients with PPMM who presented with functional deterioration underwent untethering of the spinal cord and nerve roots with an ex

AIM: PTEN-induced putative kinase 1 (PINK1) and Parkin E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase (Parkin) are critical for immune and inflammatory regulation in health and disease. PINK1 and Parkin have been confirmed to be involved in the progression of apical periodontitis by affecting mitophagy-related osteoblast apoptosis; however, the expression of PINK1 and Parkin in macrophages, one of the most important cells in apical periodontitis, remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the expression of PINK1 and Parkin in human apical periodontitis lesions, as well as their possible localization in mac

OBJECTIVE: The conventional dorsal surgical approaches used in removal of intraspinal space-occupying lesions by unroofing the spinal canal, often result the destruction of dorsal bony structures, sacrifice the interspinosus/supraspinosus ligament complexes and stripping of the paraspinal muscles causing a pathologic biomechanical milieu may lead to spinal deformities, instability. Various less invasive techniques exist to save the integrity and to prevent the instability of the spinal column and allow removal of intraspinally located space-occupying lesions at the same time. The authors discu

Bacterial sampling of prepared root canals is used to determine the presence and character of the remaining microbiota. However, it is likely that current sampling techniques only identify organisms in the main branches of the root canal system whereas it is unlikely that they can sample areas beyond the apical end-point of preparation and filling, or in lateral canals, canal extensions, apical ramifications, isthmuses and within dentinal tubules. Thus, it may be impossible by current techniques to identify residual post-treatment root canal infection. In histologic observations of root apices

The MIR396 family, composed of ath-miR396a and ath-miR396b in Arabidopsis, is conserved among plant species and is known to target the Growth-Regulating Factor (GRF) gene family. ath-miR396 overexpressors or grf mutants are characterised by small and narrow leaves and show embryogenic defects such as cotyledon fusion. Heterologous expression of ath-miR396a has been reported in tobacco and resulted in reduction of the expression of three NtGRF genes. In this study, the precursor of the Populus trichocarpa ptc-miR396c, with a mature sequence identical to ath-miR396b, was expressed under control

The success of autogenous tooth transplantation depends on the vitality of the periodontal ligament attached to the donor tooth, and its viability decreases when it is exposed extraorally. This report describes the case of a 16-year-old patient in whom a rapid prototyped tooth model was performed using cone-beam technology and a surgical template guide for autotransplantation as an effective technique for a critical time-based procedure.

AIM: To determine the types of periapical lesions associated with root filled teeth with persistent periapical pathosis that required surgical treatment based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria.
METHODOLOGY: Periapical lesions from a consecutive clinical sample of 100 patients were examined histopathologically to determine a definitive diagnosis.
RESULTS: Females were more represented (n = 56), the average age was 46.5 years and there were no age differences between gender or lesion type. A diagnosis of periapical granuloma was the most common finding with a similar number present

Root perforation repair has historically been an unpredictable treatment modality with an unacceptably high rate of clinical failure. Recent developments in the techniques and materials utilized in root perforation repair have dramatically enhanced the prognosis of both surgical and nonsurgical procedures. This article presents a review of the literature pertaining to root perforation repair and illustrates, through clinical case presentations, the principles of extraradicular surgical repair and non-surgical internal repair of root perforation using mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA).

A retrospective study was carried out to evaluate the clinical factors involved in deciding to perform apicectomies. Five hundred and seventeen teeth from 392 patients (211 women and 181 men) that had undergone apicectomy during the period from September, 1990 to December, 1992 were assessed using the patients' clinical records. The information recorded included the source of referral, the quality of preoperative root canal filling, the size of periradicular lesion, the type of the lesion (for biopsed lesions), the type of coronal and radicular restorations, and the different factors that infl

There are certain complications involved in maxillary ostetomies; devitalization of teeth, loss of part or all of the osteotomized segment, and relapse are possible problems. The paramount cause of the complications in seven different cases seemed to be the interruption of the blood supply to the operative site. A seven-point guideline is formulated; it integrates preoperative planning, surgical procqedures, and postoperative care.

The relationship of immunologic concepts to endodontic diseases is discussed. Immunologic mechanisms are considered, including antigens, haptens, antibodies, and cell-mediated responses. Studies of immunologic manifestations in endodontic diseases are given. These include (1) localization of plasma proteins in inflammed human dental pulp, (2) introduction of microbes into animal root canals, (3) introduction of non-microbial antigens into animal root canals, (4) introduction of root canal antigens into human beings, (5) introduction of root canal antigens into animals, (6) studies of "focal" i

Bone rarefactions arising from dental lesions are commonly thought to be sustained by the microbiol component or by the toxins spread out into the surrounding bone by the disintegrated pulp. In thise case endodontic therapy is the only one capable of obtaining a full recovery. In our opinion the most suitable endodontic procedure is that described by Schilder: with his technique infact a great deal of substantial results can be achieved. Bone rarefactions are to be surgically treated only when endodontic therapy does not guarantee the complete removal of microrganisms and that of the tissue de

Until the last several years liver transplantation was considered an experimental treatment procedure. Nowadays virtually any disease process, that is in terminal stage, is treatable with transplantation. The introduction of cyclosporine in 1980 and the recent use of OKT3 monoclonal antibody now allows a 5-year survival rate of 60-70%. The causes of early death of patients who survive after surgery are infective complications, multiorgan failure and acute rejection of the allograft. In the literature and in our experience, bacterial sepsis is the most common cause of deaths occurring during th

This case report describes the treatment of a skeletal Class III malocclusion with autotransplantation of a cryopreserved tooth. To gain an esthetic facial profile and good occlusion, extraction of bimaxillary premolars and surgical therapy were chosen. The patient had chronic apical periodontitis on the lower left first molar. Although she did not feel any pain in that region, the tooth was considered to have a poor prognosis. Therefore, we cryopreserved the extracted premolars to prepare for autotransplantation in the lower first molar area because the tooth would probably need to be removed
