Does a social/behavioural gradient in dental health exist among adults? A cross-sectional study.

Objective To explore the potential presence of a social/behavioural gradient in dental health among Italian adults using a cross-sectional study. Methods Caries indices were recorded among 480 subjects (52.9% men, 47.1% women) who also completed a structured self-administered social and behavioural questionnaire. A social/behavioural gradient was generated as the sum of the worst circumstances recorded on the questionnaire (cariogenic diet, smoking, lowest occupational profile, brushing teeth < twice daily, lowest educational level, uneven dental examination attendance). Results Caries figures

Associations between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin d and periodontal pocketing and gingival bleeding: results of a study in a non-smoking population in Finland.

BACKGROUND: Apart from the effects of vitamin D on bone metabolism, it is also known for its immunomodulatory properties. However, so far, it is not clear whether serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] exerts any beneficial effect on the periodontium. The aim of the present study is to investigate whether the serum level of 25(OH)D is related to periodontal condition, measured by means of pocketing and gingival bleeding. METHODS: This cross-sectional study is based on a non-smoking subpopulation without diabetes of the Finnish Health 2000 Survey (N = 1,262). Periodontal condition was measured as

Mixed Candida albicans and Candida glabrata populations associated with the pathogenesis of denture stomatitis.

INTRODUCTION: Oral yeasts are an important component of the resident microbial ecology of the oral cavity, but they are also associated with various forms of oral candidosis, such as denture stomatitis. Although Candida albicans is the predominant oral fungal pathogen, other species may also play an integral role in pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to examine the mycological ecology in patients with denture stomatitis, using an improved sampling technique, to determine whether species diversity and species quantity were related to oral pathology. METHODS: Thirty-seven patients attendin

Preventive periimplant protocol.

The primary responsibility of the clinician treating a patient with implant dentistry is to provide a long-term favorable prognosis. In consideration of changes in implant materials and restorative designs, familiarity with the relationship of the periimplant tissues to the implant components is essential. Maintaining healthy tissues requires understanding the influence of the intraoral bacterial flora, recognizing deviations from health, and initiating an appropriate preventive protocol. Various implements that are available for plaque control and debridement are discussed.

Snacking and oral health habits of Washington state WIC children and their caregivers.

The purpose of this study was to assess the snacking and oral hygiene habits of Washington State WIC children and their caregivers. In a structured interview, 84 caregivers reported that their children, 12 to 48 months of age, were snacking two to three times daily. Nutritious foods--milk, fruit juice, crackers, bananas, apples and cheese--were the most frequenty reported snacks. However, 38 percent of children were given highly cariogenic raisins for snacks once or more times per week. Snack foods were purchased most often by caregivers because they were healthful or the child's favorite. Put

Bridging the Implementation Gap: Artificial Intelligence in Periodontology from Proof-of-Concept to Clinical Governance-A Systematic Scoping Review with Evidence from Kazakhstan.

Background/Objectives: Periodontitis, the sixth most prevalent disease worldwide, affects over 740 million people and disproportionately burdens transitional economies. Although artificial intelligence (AI)-including deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML)-achieves high diagnostic accuracy in research settings, a gap persists between proof-of-concept and real-world deployment, especially where regulation is nascent, as in Kazakhstan. This scoping review maps global evidence on AI for periodontal diagnosis, risk prediction, and monitoring; evaluates governance frameworks; and proposes a co

Ultrasound Characterization of Oral Soft Tissues in vivo Using the Burr Speckle Model.

Periodontal (gum) diseases, reportedly affect 4 out of 10 adults 30 years of age or older in the USA. The standard of care for clinical assessments of these diseases is bleeding on probing, which is invasive, subjective and semi-qualitative. Thus, research on proposing alternative noninvasive modalities for clinical assessments of periodontal tissues is crucial. Quantitative Ultrasound (QUS) has shown promises in noninvasive assessments of various diseases in soft biological tissues; however, it has not been employed in periodontology. Here as the first step, we focused on QUS-based characteri

Experimental and clinical studies on plastic periodontal procedures.

We have compiled, in this Periodontology 2000 review, all Latin American literature on experimental and clinical studies of periodontal plastic procedures. The body of literature on this subject has led to a discussion of the features and treatment outcomes of root-coverage procedures. Over time, knowledge on periodontal plastic procedures has become less empirical and more supportive of the clinical management of recession-type defects. Gingival recession etiology, animal studies, free gingival grafts, pedicle flaps (semilunar, laterally positioned, and coronally positioned), and subepithelia
