Genomic differentiation and conservation relevance of isolated marginal Primula farinosa populations in Central-Eastern Europe.

INTRODUCTION: Quaternary climatic oscillations produced heterogeneous range dynamics in European cold-adapted plants. Primula farinosa L. has been discussed in the context of the interglacial expansion model for moisture-demanding cold-adapted species. However, it remains unclear whether isolated low-elevation populations in Central European calcareous fens and wet meadows represent long-term relicts or recently established populations. METHODS: We used RADseq-derived SNPs from four sampling localities in the Balaton Region of Hungary and one low-elevation comparative locality at Lipce in the

Fine-scale urban-land configurations indirectly drive the strong spatial variability in pCO2 and CO2 fluxes in mountainous urban streams.

Urban streams are increasingly recognized as significant sources of atmospheric CO2. However, the spatial variability of CO2 fluxes in polluted mountainous urban streams, and how watershed-scale urban functional land use configurations indirectly regulate this variability, remain poorly constrained. This study conducted high-resolution spatial and seasonal monitoring of CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) and fluxes (fCO2) in two heavily polluted urban streams in Chongqing, China. We integrated a novel Environmental Pressure Index (EPI) based on fine-scale urban-land configurations to explore how urba

Microsatellite analysis of genetic differentiation among populations of the malaria vector Anopheles funestus across mainland Tanzania reveals contrasted patterns of geographic isolation and gene flow.

BACKGROUND: Despite Anopheles funestus s.s. being a highly competent and widespread malaria vector in Africa, its population structure remains largely understudied in many countries, including Tanzania. Herein, we examine the genetic diversity, geographic isolation, and gene flow of An. funestus populations across ten administrative regions in mainland Tanzania. METHODS: We employed 12 previously used microsatellite DNA markers to describe genetic diversity, isolation by distance, and gene flow patterns among ten An. funestus s.s. populations (n = 654) and one An. parensis population (n = 28)

Transcriptomic insights into the immune responses of the lung and muscle of non-healthy harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena).

INTRODUCTION: The harbor porpoise populations of the North and Baltic Seas are highly impacted by human activities, including underwater-radiated noise, fisheries and pollution. These cumulative stressors can have various detrimental effects, such as reduced foraging success, altered behavior and an impaired immune system. Harbor porpoises especially suffer from diseases of the respiratory tract which are partly caused or exacerbated by high parasitic prevalence in the lungs that may ultimately affect diving ability and competitiveness due to insufficient oxygen uptake and supply to the locomo

Light limitation and water velocity modify the impacts of simulated marine heatwaves on juvenile giant kelp.

Coastal regions are complex habitats, where multiple natural and anthropogenic drivers can interact to affect the survival and growth of marine organisms. The giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera is sensitive to increasing seawater temperatures and susceptible to marine heatwaves. Light availability and hydrodynamics can also affect the growth, morphology, and resilience of this species. In this experiment, juvenile sporophytes of M. pyrifera from Scorching Bay, Wellington, Aotearoa, New Zealand, a were exposed to a combination of simulated marine heatwaves at one of four different temperatures (20

Naphthalene Carboxylation in the Sulfate-Reducing Enrichment Culture N47 Is Proposed to Proceed via 1,3-Dipolar Cycloaddition to the Cofactor Prenylated Flavin Mononucleotide.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are persistent pollutants of anthropogenic or natural origin in the environment and accumulate in anoxic habitats. In this study, we investigated the mechanism of the enzyme naphthalene carboxylase as a model reaction for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon activation by carboxylation. An enzyme assay was established with cell extracts of the highly enriched culture N47. In assays without addition of ATP, naphthalene carboxylase catalyzed a stable isotope exchange of the carboxyl group of naphthoate with 13C-labeled bicarbonate buffer, which can only occur via a pa

Air Pollution, Ultrafine Particles, and Your Brain: Are Combustion Nanoparticle Emissions and Engineered Nanoparticles Causing Preventable Fatal Neurodegenerative Diseases and Common Neuropsychiatric Outcomes?

Exposure to particulate matter (PM) pollution damages the human brain. Fossil fuel burning for transportation energy accounts for a significant fraction of urban air and climate pollution. While current United States (US) standards limit PM ambient concentrations and emissions, they do not regulate explicitly ultrafine particles (UFP ≤ 100 nm in diameter). There is a growing body of evidence suggesting UFP may play a bigger role inflicting adverse health impacts than has been recognized, and in this perspective, we highlight effects on the brain, particularly of young individuals. UFP penetrat

Pleistocene expansion, anthropogenic pressure and ocean currents: Disentangling the past and ongoing evolutionary history of Patella aspera Röding, 1798 in the archipelago of Madeira.

AIMS: Rising sea-level following the Last Glacial Maximum lead to fragmentation of coastal limpet populations between islands of the Archipelago of Madeira. This fragmentation is reinforced by recent heavy exploitation reducing effective population size on Madeira Island. We use the limpet P. aspera to understand how the role of processes at different time scales (i.e. changes in the sea level and overexploitation) can influence the genetic composition of an extant species, relating these processes to reproductive phenology and seasonal shifts in ocean currents. LOCATION: Madeira Island, Port

Environmental Epigenetics and Genome Flexibility: Focus on 5-Hydroxymethylcytosine.

Convincing evidence accumulated over the last decades demonstrates the crucial role of epigenetic modifications for mammalian genome regulation and its flexibility. DNA methylation and demethylation is a key mechanism of genome programming and reprogramming. During ontogenesis, the DNA methylome undergoes both programmed changes and those induced by environmental and endogenous factors. The former enable accurate activation of developmental programs; the latter drive epigenetic responses to factors that directly or indirectly affect epigenetic biochemistry leading to alterations in genome regu

Behavioral, morphometric, and gene expression effects in adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryonically exposed to PFOA, PFOS, and PFNA.

Perfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) are a class of persistent anthropogenic chemicals that have been detected worldwide. PFASs consist of fluorinated carbon chains of varying length, terminal groups, and have a number of industrial uses. A previous zebrafish study from our laboratory showed that acute (3-120h post fertilization, 0.02-2.0μM), waterborne embryonic exposure to these chemicals resulted in chemical specific alterations at 5days post fertilization (dpf), and some effects persisted up to 14 dpf. Using a gene battery consisting of 100 transcripts identified several genes that were up

Evidence for temporal population replacement and the signature of ecological adaptation in a major Neotropical malaria vector in Amazonian Peru.

BACKGROUND: The major Neotropical malaria vector, Anopheles darlingi, was reintroduced into the Iquitos, Loreto, Peru area during the early 1990s, where it displaced other anophelines and caused a major malaria epidemic. Since then, case numbers in Loreto have fluctuated, but annual increases have been reported since 2012. METHODS: The population genetic structure of An. darlingi sampled before and after the introduction of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) was investigated to test the hypothesis of temporal population change (2006 vs. 2012). Current samples of An. darlingi were used to

Physico-chemical characterization of African urban aerosols (Bamako in Mali and Dakar in Senegal) and their toxic effects in human bronchial epithelial cells: description of a worrying situation.

BACKGROUND: The involvement of particulate matter (PM) in cardiorespiratory diseases is now established in developed countries whereas in developing areas such as Africa with a high level of specific pollution, PM pollution and its effects are poorly studied. Our objective was to characterize the biological reactivity of urban African aerosols on human bronchial epithelial cells in relation to PM physico-chemical properties to identify toxic sources. METHODS: Size-speciated aerosol chemical composition was analyzed in Bamako (BK, Mali, 2 samples with one having desert dust event BK1) and Daka

Organochlorine and metal contaminant exposure and effects in hatching black-crowned night herons (Nycticorax nycticorax) in Delaware Bay.

Pea Patch Island in Delaware Bay is the site of the largest heronry north of Florida. From 1989-93, the population of nine species of wading birds numbered approximately 12,000 pairs, but has recently declined to about 7,000 pairs. Because Delaware Bay is a major shipping channel and receives anthropogenic releases of toxic substances from agricultural, industrial, and municipal point and nonpoint sources, contaminant exposure and effects to the heronry have been an ongoing concern. In 1997, pipping (early hatching stage) black-crowned night herons (Nycticorax nycticorax) were collected from s

Contrasting African elephant movescapes across xeric and mesic savannas.

Expanding human activities increasingly influence animal movement. Yet, conservation interventions often overlook intraspecific variation in how movement is structured across populations inhabiting distinct ecosystems. For wide-ranging generalists such as African savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana), understanding how responses to resource availability and anthropogenic pressure vary across populations is critical for effective conservation planning. Here, we analyze long-term GPS tracking data from 175 African elephants to contrast how movement is structured across mesic (Mara-Serengeti) an

Stable isotope analysis reveals resource use by rays in an Australian temperate estuary.

Estuarine ecosystems are increasingly threatened by anthropogenic activities that deplete or replace natural habitats. This may lead to cascading effects in estuarine food webs as the availability of primary producers changes. Rays are ecosystem engineers that feed in sedimentary environments, yet their main prey items and the primary producers supporting their nutrition are unknown. The aim of this study was to assess resource use of two ray species in Wallis Lake, New South Wales, Australia, the estuary stingray (Hemitrygon fluviorum) and the common stingaree (Trygonoptera testacea). Using s

Long-term evaluation of a zoned catch-neuter-vaccinate-release program integrating owner engagement and buffer zone strategies for humane dog population management and rabies control in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Catch-neuter-vaccinate-release (CNVR) is recognized as a humane and sustainable strategy for controlling free-roaming dog populations and eliminating dog-mediated rabies. However, long-term evaluations incorporating spatial planning and community participation remain scarce. This study assessed a five-year zoned CNVR program integrating owner engagement and a peripheral buffer zone strategy in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, a religious heritage city affected by frequent puppy dumping and high densities of free-roaming dogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 2021 to 2025, sexually inta

Wildland-urban interface wildfire increases metal contributions to stormwater runoff in Paradise, California.

The 2018 Camp Fire was a large late-year (November) wildfire that produced an urban firestorm in the Town of Paradise, California, USA, and destroyed more than 18 000 structures. Runoff from burned wildland areas is known to contain ash, which can transport contaminants including metals into nearby watersheds. However, due to historically infrequent occurrences, the effect of wildland-urban interface (WUI) fires, such as the Camp Fire, on surface water quality has not been well-characterized. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of widespread urban burning on surface water quality in

Isolation and characterization of PGPR obtained from different arsenic-contaminated soil samples and their effect on photosynthetic characters of maize grown under arsenic stress.

Contamination of the environment due to speedup of anthropogenic activities has become a serious threat to modern humanity. Among the contaminants, the new emerging concern is the heavy metal (HM) contamination in the environment. Because the persistence and harmfulness of heavy metals affect the ecosystem and the health of plants, animals, and humans, they are the most toxic substances in the environment. Among them, Arsenic (As) emerged as major environmental constraint leading to enormous negative effects on the plant, animal, and human health. Even in minute quantity, As is known to cause

Resource predictability modulates spatial-use networks in an endangered scavenger species.

BACKGROUND: Changes in human-induced resource availability can alter the behaviour of free-living species and affect their foraging strategies. The future European Landfill Waste Directive and Circular Economy Action Plan will reduce the number of predictable anthropogenic food subsidies (PAFS), above all, by closing landfills to preclude negative effects on human health. Obligate avian scavengers, the most threatened group of birds worldwide, are the most likely group of species that will be forced to change their behaviour and use of space in response to landfill site closures. Here, we exam
