Snapshot of resistome, virulome and mobilome in aquaculture.

Aquaculture environments can be hotspots for resistance genes through the surrounding environment. Our objective was to study the resistome, virulome and mobilome of Gram-negative bacteria isolated in seabream and bivalve molluscs, using a WGS approach. Sixty-six Gram-negative strains (Aeromonadaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, Hafniaceae, Morganellaceae, Pseudomonadaceae, Shewanellaceae, Vibrionaceae, and Yersiniaceae families) were selected for genomic characterization. The species and MLST were determined, and antibiotic/disinfectants/heavy metals resistance genes, virulence determinants, MGE, and

Multiple antimicrobial resistance and outcomes among hospitalized patients with complicated urinary tract infections in the US, 2013-2018: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Complicated urinary tract infection (cUTI) is common among hospitalized patients. Though carbapenems are an effective treatment in the face of rising resistance, overuse drives carbapenem resistance (CR). We hypothesized that resistance to routinely used antimicrobials is common, and, despite frequent use of carbapenems, associated with an increased risk of inappropriate empiric treatment (IET), which in turn worsens clinical outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients hospitalized with a culture-positive non-CR cUTI. Triple resistance (TR) was defined

Comprehensive genomic analysis reveals virulence factors and antibiotic resistance genes in Pantoea agglomerans KM1, a potential opportunistic pathogen.

Pantoea agglomerans is a Gram-negative facultative anaerobic bacillus causing a wide range of opportunistic infections in humans including septicemia, pneumonia, septic arthritis, wound infections and meningitis. To date, the determinants of virulence, antibiotic resistance, metabolic features conferring survival and host-associated pathogenic potential of this bacterium remain largely underexplored. In this study, we sequenced and assembled the whole-genome of P. agglomerans KM1 isolated from kimchi in South Korea. The genome contained one circular chromosome of 4,039,945 bp, 3 mega plasmids,

Appropriate Use of Short-Course Antibiotics in Common Infections: Best Practice Advice From the American College of Physicians.

DESCRIPTION: Antimicrobial overuse is a major health care issue that contributes to antibiotic resistance. Such overuse includes unnecessarily long durations of antibiotic therapy in patients with common bacterial infections, such as acute bronchitis with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbation, community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), urinary tract infections (UTIs), and cellulitis. This article describes best practices for prescribing appropriate and short-duration antibiotic therapy for patients presenting with these infections. METHODS: The authors conducted a narrative liter

Plasmid carrying mcr-9 from an extensively drug-resistant NDM-1-producing Klebsiella quasipneumoniae subsp. quasipneumoniae clinical isolate.

The extensively drug-resistant NDM-1-producing Klebsiella quasipneumoniae subsp. quasipneumoniae M17277 (Kqsq-M17277) was only susceptible to colistin and fosfomycin. Whole genome sequencing of Kqsq-M17277 was performed through Illumina (short reads) and Oxford Nanopore Technologies (long reads). Hybrid assembly of short and long reads rendered circular contigs of the Kqsq-M17277 chromosome and three plasmids of 477,340 (p17277A_477), 138,998 (p17277C_138, which harbored blaNDM-1) and 123,307 bp (p17277B_123). Compatibility of prolonged infusion antibiotics during Y-site administration.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance is a threat to global public health. The use of prolonged infusions in the hospital setting for certain antimicrobials is widely increasing in order to improve their efficacy and safety, including resistance development. Due to limited vascular access, it is important to clarify whether they can be infused through the same line with other drugs during Y-site administration. AIM: The aim of this review is to update and summarize the evidence on Y-site compatibility of antibacterial agents administered as prolonged infusions in intensive care units (ICUs).

The Point Prevalence Survey Research of Antibacterial Drugs' Prescription for Outpatient Treatment of Urinary System Infections.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic resistance of microorganisms is the subject of numerous discussions and initiatives, it has a well-defined tendency to increase which is largely related to a big number of errors when prescribing antibacterial drugs at the outpatient stage of treatment and disease prevention, as well as a lack of information and data on the quantity and quality of antimicrobial therapy. One of the elements aimed at reducing antibiotic resistance growth is audit and analysis of application practice. AIM: To assess qualitative and quantitative characteristics for urinary tract infections
