The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on intensive care unit workers: a nationwide survey.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Canadian intensive care unit (ICU) workers. METHODS: Between June and August 2020, we distributed a cross-sectional online survey of ICU workers evaluating the impact of the pandemic, coping strategies, symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD; Impact of Events Scale-Revised), and psychological distress, anxiety, and depression (Kessler Psychological Distress Scale). We performed regression analyses to determine the predictors of psychological symptoms. RESULTS: We analyzed responses from 455 ICU workers (80% women; 67% from

Virtual Reality Augmented Feedback Rehabilitation Associated to Action Observation Therapy in Buccofacial Apraxia: Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Buccofacial Apraxia is defined as the inability to perform voluntary movements of the larynx, pharynx, mandible, tongue, lips and cheeks, while automatic or reflexive control of these structures is preserved. Buccofacial Apraxia frequently co-occurs with aphasia and apraxia of speech and it has been reported as almost exclusively resulting from a lesion of the left hemisphere. Recent studies have demonstrated the benefit of treating apraxia using motor training principles such as Augmented Feedback or Action Observation Therapy. In light of this, the study describes the treatment b

Deconstructing Timbre into 5 Physiological Parameters: Vocal Mode, Amount of Metal, Degree of Density, Size of Larynx, and Sound Coloring.

UNLABELLED: Timbre has been related to adjustment at the source as well as adjustments in resonance, including laryngeal height and hypopharynx area and volume. However, it is often presented in vocal pedagogy as solely related to resonance. Very little data is available on the laryngeal adjustments at both source and resonance involved in achieving various timbres across a variety of phonation types. PURPOSE: To systematically assess the independent laryngeal adjustments at the source and independent laryngeal adjustments in the vocal tract necessary to obtain the lightest and darkest timbra

Mothers' and Grandmothers' misconceptions and socio-cultural factors as barriers to exclusive breastfeeding: A qualitative study involving Health Workers in two rural districts of Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Education on exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) practices is usually given in the form of health talks by health workers (HWs). The need for HWs to be well-informed about cultural practices and misconceptions that act as barriers to EBF has been documented in literature. This information can guide HWs in developing interventions such as health talks which are culturally sensitive. However, this has not been explored from the perspectives of HWs in Ghana. In this paper, we report mothers' and grandmothers' misconceptions and cultural practices that are barriers to EBF in two rural distri

Multidisciplinary clinic dedicated to treating youth with pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome: presenting characteristics of the first 47 consecutive patients.

BACKGROUND: Abrupt, dramatic onset obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and/or eating restriction with at least two coinciding symptoms (anxiety, mood dysregulation, irritability/aggression/oppositionality, behavioral regression, cognitive deterioration, sensory or motor abnormalities, or somatic symptoms) defines pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS). Descriptions of clinical data in such youth are limited. METHODS: We reviewed charts of 53 consecutive patients evaluated in our PANS Clinic; 47 met PANS symptom criteria but not all met the requirement for "acute onset." Patien

Objective Assessment of Ideomotor Limb Apraxia Using Markerless Computer Vision and Machine Learning: A Proposed Framework and Validation Design.

Ideomotor limb apraxia is a higher-order disorder of learned, skilled movement that cannot be adequately explained by elementary weakness, sensory loss, ataxia, extrapyramidal dysfunction, impaired comprehension, or lack of cooperation. It is common after left hemisphere stroke and occurs in several neurodegenerative diseases. Quantitative kinematic study of apraxic movement is well established in the research literature, and standardized clinical instruments such as the Test of Upper Limb Apraxia and its bedside screen have improved the reliability of the examination. What remains missing is

A Cost-Effective and Easy-to-Fabricate Conductive Velcro Dry Electrode for Durable and High-Performance Biopotential Acquisition.

Compared with the traditional gel electrode, the dry electrode is being taken more seriously in bioelectrical recording because of its easy preparation, long-lasting ability, and reusability. However, the commonly used dry AgCl electrodes and silver cloth electrodes are generally hard to record through hair due to their flat contact surface. Claw electrodes can contact skin through hair on the head and body, but the internal claw structure is relatively hard and causes discomfort after being worn for a few hours. Here, we report a conductive Velcro electrode (CVE) with an elastic hook hair str

Symptomatology after damage to the angular gyrus through the lenses of modern lesion-symptom mapping.

Brain-behavior relationships are complex. For instance, one might know a brain region's function(s) but still be unable to accurately predict deficit type or severity after damage to that region. Here, I discuss the case of damage to the angular gyrus (AG) that can cause left-right confusion, finger agnosia, attention deficit, and lexical agraphia, as well as impairment in sentence processing, episodic memory, number processing, and gesture imitation. Some of these symptoms are grouped under AG syndrome or Gerstmann's syndrome, though its exact underlying neuronal systems remain elusive. This

A Comparison of Maternal and Clinician Perception of Communication in Autistic Toddlers.

PURPOSE: Parent instruction in communication facilitation strategies for autistic toddlers relies on assumptions that parents interpret child behaviors in alignment with clinician definitions of communication. The purpose of this study was to identify features of child behaviors that are predictive of alignment in identification of child communication between clinical researchers and mothers of young autistic children. METHOD: Participants were 33 mothers and their autistic children between 18 and 48 months of age. Mothers' and clinical researchers' perceptions of child communication were ass

Ambulation Mode Classification of Individuals with Transfemoral Amputation through A-Mode Sonomyography and Convolutional Neural Networks.

Many people struggle with mobility impairments due to lower limb amputations. To participate in society, they need to be able to walk on a wide variety of terrains, such as stairs, ramps, and level ground. Current lower limb powered prostheses require different control strategies for varying ambulation modes, and use data from mechanical sensors within the prosthesis to determine which ambulation mode the user is in. However, it can be challenging to distinguish between ambulation modes. Efforts have been made to improve classification accuracy by adding electromyography information, but this

[Crisis-MBT: Mentalization-based brief hospitalization intervention].

Context Our team works in a psychiatric hospital unit at the University Hospitals of Geneva (Switzerland). We welcome there for 7 days people in crisis situations who have either suicidal thoughts or suicidal behavior. As factors precipitating the suicidal crisis, these people go through life events that are accompanied by intense interpersonal difficulties or that threaten the image they have of themselves. In our clinical population, approximately 35% of patients suffer from borderline personality disorder (BPD). In these patients, repeated crises and suicidal behavior lead to frequent and d

Introducing a brain-computer interface to facilitate intraoperative medical imaging control - a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Safe and accurate execution of surgeries to date mainly rely on preoperative plans generated based on preoperative imaging. Frequent intraoperative interaction with such patient images during the intervention is needed, which is currently a cumbersome process given that such images are generally displayed on peripheral two-dimensional (2D) monitors and controlled through interface devices that are outside the sterile filed. This study proposes a new medical image control concept based on a Brain Computer Interface (BCI) that allows for hands-free and direct image manipulation witho

Prefrontal seizure classification based on stereo-EEG quantification and automatic clustering.

PURPOSE: Frontal seizures are organized according to anatomo-functional subdivisions of the frontal lobe. Prefrontal seizures have been the subject of few detailed studies to date. The objective of this study was to identify subcategories of prefrontal seizures based on seizure onset quantification and to look for semiological differences. METHODS: Consecutive patients who underwent stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) for drug-resistant prefrontal epilepsy between 2000 and 2018 were included. The different prefrontal regions investigated in our patients were dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DL

[Short-term impact of an ambulatory cardiac rehabilitation program on arterial rigidity].

BACKGROUND: If the positive impact of cardiac rehabilitation on metabolic profile and exercise tolerance is well documented in the literature, very few studies evaluated the impact of these rehabilitation programs on arterial rigidity. PURPOSE: The main objective of this study was to determine if a short and intense 4-week cardiac rehabilitation program could yield a positive impact on arterial rigidity. METHOD: A cohort study was performed on Leopold Bellan Foundation. All patients referred for cardiac rehabilitation program after an acute event (surgery, technical gesture or acute decompen

Fatal self-poisoning in the UK and the paracetamol/dextropropoxyphene combination.

Coroners' files have been examined to ascertain the numbers of deaths involving self-poisoning with analgesic drugs with specific reference to the paracetamol/dextropropoxyphene combination. The period of study was 1976-1980. This report concentrates on cases in England, although reference is made to similar deaths occurring in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Data have been collected extensively on a wide range of issues concerning fatal self-poisonings mainly by visiting coroners' offices in England to make direct investigation of records. The total number of cases where the paracetamol/dextro

Hand Posturing Is a Nonverbal Indicator of Catastrophic Thinking for Finger, Hand, or Wrist Injury.

BACKGROUND: Prior research documents that greater psychologic distress (anxiety/depression) and less effective coping strategies (catastrophic thinking, kinesophobia) are associated with greater pain intensity and greater limitations. Recognition and acknowledgment of verbal and nonverbal indicators of psychologic factors might raise opportunities for improved psychologic health. There is evidence that specific patient words and phrases indicate greater catastrophic thinking. This study tested proposed nonverbal indicators (such as flexion of the wrist during attempted finger flexion or extens

Language, communication, and the use of symbols in normal and autistic children.

The characteristics of language and other forms of communication in normal and autistic children are described. The main basis of comparison is the extent to which each group can comprehend and use spoken and nonspoken language and also develop inner language. It is suggested that the central problem in early childhood autism is an impairment of complex symbolic function affecting all forms of communication. This problem can occur on its own, but, in the majority of cases, it is associated with other impairments of the central nervous system. The relationship of early childhood autism to menta

A dual-time-scale cooperative memory mechanism for spiking neural networks.

Spiking neural networks (SNNs), as core models of brain-inspired computing, simulate the computational mechanisms of biological neural systems. However, existing models lack the division of labor and collaboration mechanisms found in biological fast and slow neural populations, making it difficult for single-timescale neural populations to simultaneously capture transient events and maintain long-term dependencies. Furthermore, these models are deeply coupled with specific data and tasks. Therefore, a spiking neural network with dual-timescale cooperative memory is proposed to simulate the div

The "Namaste Sign"-A Novel Coronal MRI Marker for the Evaluation of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Integrity.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is universally recognized as the gold standard for evaluating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. However, differentiating partial tears from complete ruptures using the standard sagittal plane remains a diagnostic challenge. The oblique coronal orientation of the ACL often leads to volume averaging artifacts and inaccurate interpretations. While axial imaging offers a favorable alternative, distal tears near the tibial attachment are frequently missed. This review synthesizes current concepts in the anatomical and radiological evaluation of the ACL and
