In the atrophic posterior maxilla, successful implant placement is often complicated by the lack of quality and volume of available bone. In these cases, sinus floor augmentation is recommended to gain sufficient bone around the implants. Sinus elevation can be performed by either an open lateral window approach or by a closed osteotome approach depending on available bone height. This case series demonstrates the feasibility and safety of minimally invasive antral membrane balloon elevation, followed by bone augmentation and implant fixation in 20 patients with a residual bone height of 2 to

In fibrous dysplasia (FD), growth of the lesions usually arrests around early adolescence. However, in some cases, it continues even after this period, and it is not clear under what kind of conditions this growth continues. If this continued growth could be predicted, it would provide a vital assessment tool to determine when bone contouring should be performed. We were able to find numerous reports about FD concerning surgical procedures, but only a small number included long-term postoperative follow-up. In this paper, we investigated 11 patients with FD who were available for a postoperati

Records of patients undergoing the surgical removal of miniplates placed during the management of maxillofacial trauma (n=49) and orthognathic surgery (n=16) in a single unit, over a 2-year period have been analysed. Data concerning indications for plating, age and sex distribution, site of plating, time between insertion and removal, antibiotic prophylaxis, general medical factors and clinical indications for plate removal were evaluated for all patients. In addition, data for trauma patients included the site of fracture, and time delay between injury and plate insertion. Infection and/or wo

Although maxillary sinusitis often occurs in patients with medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) of the upper jaw, there have been few reports on the treatment and outcomes for maxillary sinusitis associated with maxillary MRONJ. This study aimed to retrospectively investigate the treatment outcomes of maxillary sinusitis in patients with MRONJ of the upper jaw. There were 34 patients diagnosed with maxillary MRONJ and sinusitis by preoperative computed tomography who underwent surgery in our institution between January 2011 and December 2019. Age, sex, primary disease, stage of

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a new water lift system used as a surgical instrument in the crestal approach of the sinus membrane lifting operation and the capability of this technique to reduce the risk of Schneiderian membrane perforation in comparison with a lateral approach using piezoelectric surgery. 50 sinus membrane-lifting operations were performed. Patients were randomized in 2 groups to receive either lateral sinus elevation with piezosurgery or crestal sinus elevation using the new surgical device. Schneiderian membrane perforation was noted in 6 pa

BACKGROUND: The bone support for implants in the posterior part of the maxilla is often poor. This condition may be treated with augmentation of the maxillary sinus floor. The most common technique used is to elevate the sinus floor by inserting a bone graft through a window opened in the lateral antral wall. In 1994, a less-invasive technique using osteotomes was suggested by Summers.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcome of implants placed in the posterior maxilla with the osteotome sinus floor elevation (OSFE) technique without grafting.

OBJECTIVES: To study the effects of maxillary sinus floor elevation by a tissue engineered bone complex with bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) gene modified bone marrow stromal cells (bMSCs) and a novel porous ceramic scaffold (OsteoBone) in rabbits.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: bMSCs derived from New Zealand rabbit bone marrow were cultured and transduced with adenovirus AdBMP-2 and with AdEGFP gene (without BMP-2 gene sequence) as a control, respectively, in vitro. These bMSCs were then combined with OsteoBone scaffold at a concentration of 2 x 10(7)cells/ml and used to elevate the maxillary s

Maxillofacial district osteomas are benign lesions with very slow growth. The most frequent localization is the frontal sinus, about 57% of all paranasal cavity osteomas; less frequently, they can be located in the ethmoidal sinus or sphenoidal and maxillary. Etiology has not completely clarified yet; nevertheless, there are 3 main pathogenetic theories: osteogenic, traumatic, and infective. Open procedures represent the gold standard, but there is still an unsolved debate for the best treatment option. Endoscopic techniques offer an alternative approach, enabling closer and more direct visual

20 retromolar bone grafts were harvested in outpatients for augmentation of the implant site from January to June 2000 (10 female, 10 male, 40.9 +/- 12.8 years, minimum 17 years, maximum 66 years). The aim of the study was to assess typical complications of this procedure in a prospective manner. For the determination of the superficial sensory function of the inferior alveolar and the lingual nerve, an objective method was used. The bone grafts were harvested for single tooth reconstruction. In 14 cases a ridge augmentation and in 6 cases an endoscopically controlled crestal sinus floor eleva

BACKGROUND: The crestal core elevation (CCE) technique is reportedly a less invasive procedure than the lateral window elevation technique. We retrospectively evaluated long-term outcomes of CCE procedures over an 11-year time period.
METHODS: Core preparations were made after extractions of 57 upper molars in 45 patients. Extraction sites were drilled with a calibrated trephine bur to an estimated distance of 1 mm from the sinus membrane. The trephined interradicular bone and underlying sinus membrane were imploded into the sinus. The surgical crater and residual extraction socket were fille

PURPOSE: Recent advances in computer-modeling software allow reconstruction of facial symmetry in a virtual environment. This study evaluates the use of preoperative computer modeling and intraoperative navigation to guide reconstruction of the maxillofacial skeleton.
METHODS: Three patients with traumatic maxillofacial deformities received preoperative, thin-cut axial CT scans. Three-dimensional reconstructions, virtual osteotomies, and bony reductions were performed using MIMICS planning software (Materialise, Ann Arbor, MI). The original and "repaired" virtual datasets were then imported i
