Risk factors for typhoid and paratyphoid fever in Jakarta, Indonesia.

CONTEXT: The proportion of paratyphoid fever cases to typhoid fever cases may change due to urbanization and increased dependency on food purchased from street vendors. For containment of paratyphoid a different strategy may be needed than for typhoid, because risk factors for disease may not coincide and current typhoid vaccines do not protect against paratyphoid fever. OBJECTIVE: To determine risk factors for typhoid and paratyphoid fever in an endemic area. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Community-based case-control study conducted from June 2001 to February 2003 in hospitals and outp

[Suicide by schizophrenic patients in psychiatric hospitals].

A detailed investigation was carried out on the schizophrenics who committed suicide at the Tokyo Metropolitan Hospital Matsuzawa during the last 30 years. Of these 58 schizophrenics, 52 cases (male 25, female 27) were studied in this report. The mean age of suicide patients was 38.6 years (male: 34.3 years, female: 42.6 years); in males the suicide occurred between 20 and 39 years (80%), while females showed a wider distribution with two peaks in the 25 to 34 years group (26%) and the 40 to 54 years group (41%). 88% (22/25) of males were unmarried, whereas only 33% (9/27) of the women were un

AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF VACCINATION AGAINST BACILLI DYSENTERIAE.

The purpose of the present investigation was to determine a practical method of vaccination against bacillary dysentery. It has been emphasized that the toxicity of the dysentery group of organisms, especially that of the Shiga bacillus, is such as not to permit of their employment in simple saline or aqueous suspensions. If, on the other hand, their toxicity is removed by the addition of certain chemicals, the antigen of the bacilli is so changed as not to be suitable for immunization purposes. The toxicity of the bacilli can also be diminished by the addition of immune serum. There is no ess

Safety and cost-effectiveness of a pure hypochlorous acid cleansing solution in wounds and non-intact skin management: a narrative review.

OBJECTIVE: Wound cleansing is an essential part of wound bed preparation and its importance in wound management is supported by numerous international guidelines and consensus documents. Cleansing solutions are used by healthcare professionals for wounds and non-intact skin. However, some of these solutions may not be effective in addressing the condition of the wound or safe enough to be used in certain patients due to the solution's potential for irritation or toxicity. According to guidelines, solution of pure hypochlorous acid (pHA; free of hypochlorite derivatives) provides a good balance

Assessment of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) of living surroundings and school environment among adolescent high school students in Northwest Ethiopia: mixed method study.

BACKGROUND: School-based WASH programs in low- and middle-income countries showed significant impacts on health, nutrition and education. Poor WASH practices contributed to malnutrition, anemia, infections, and gender inequities, particularly among adolescents. Inadequate facilities, sociocultural and economic disparities are key challenges. This study aimed to assess the availability, quality, accessibility and practice of WASH in the living surroundings and school environments among adolescent high school students in the study area. METHODOLOGY: This study employed a convergent explanatory

A systematic review of water, sanitation, and hygiene practices in developing countries: exploring the effects on public health.

BACKGROUND: Lack of proper access to safe Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) is a pervasive cause of preventable disease and mortality in developing countries, disproportionately impacting the most vulnerable portions of the population. Despite activity globally, much still needs to be accomplished regarding expansion of WASH coverage, and the issue still remains a defining public health challenge. This systematic review synthesizes available evidence to assess the current status of WASH practices, associated health outcomes, and the barriers to effective safe WASH behaviors in developing c

Barriers and Facilitators to Maintaining Physical Activity After an mHealth Intervention for People Poststroke or Transient Ischemic Attack: Reflexive Thematic Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Regular physical activity is critical for preventing secondary stroke following a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). Although mobile health (mHealth) interventions have shown promise for promoting short-term increases in physical activity, evidence on their long-term effects and the mechanisms that support sustained behavior change remains limited. In particular, little is known about how people poststroke or TIA integrate the skills, knowledge, and habits gained through mHealth interventions into their daily lives once structured intervention support ends. OBJECTIVE: This

Anthropogenic tritium as a continental-scale tracer in river-derived recharge.

BACKGROUND: Environmental hazards like floods, droughts and landslides pose serious public health and wellbeing consequences for populations, especially vulnerable communities in countries with low adaptive capacity. Empirical evidence from peer-reviewed literature and official climate change assessments indicates that, alongside high interannual climate variability, Uganda has experienced observable climate change over the past 50 years. This changing and increasingly variable climate poses challenges to population health in diverse ways, including through the transmission of infectious disea

Diarrhea and its associated factors among children aged under five years in Madagascar, 2024: a multilevel logistic regression analysis.

BACKGROUND: Diarrhea, defined as three or more loose stool per day, is a major cause of child mortality. Exploring its prevalence, and influencing factors is crucial for public health decision and targeted interventions. This study aimed to investigate these aspects using 2021 Madagascar demographic health survey data. METHOD: This study employed a cross-sectional design, analyzing data from a total of 8,740 weighted under-five children. The dependent variable was the occurrence of diarrhea, which was measured based on caregiver-reported incidents within the previous two weeks prior to the su

Sculpting the Unseen: Innovations in Orbital Implants and Prosthetics.

Glyphosate is used extensively as a non-selective herbicide by both professional applicators and consumers and its use is likely to increase further as it is one of the first herbicides against which crops have been genetically modified to increase their tolerance. Commercial glyphosate-based formulations most commonly range from concentrates containing 41% or more glyphosate to 1% glyphosate formulations marketed for domestic use. They generally consist of an aqueous mixture of the isopropylamine (IPA) salt of glyphosate, a surfactant, and various minor components including anti-foaming and c

Components of clean delivery kits and newborn mortality in the Zambia Chlorhexidine Application Trial (ZamCAT): An observational study.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal infection, a leading cause of neonatal death in low- and middle-income countries, is often caused by pathogens acquired during childbirth. Clean delivery kits (CDKs) have shown efficacy in reducing infection-related perinatal and neonatal mortality. However, there remain gaps in our current knowledge, including the effect of individual components, the timeline of protection, and the benefit of CDKs in home and facility deliveries. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A post hoc secondary analysis was performed using nonrandomized data from the Zambia Chlorhexidine Application Trial (Zam
