Significant contributions of combustion-related NH3 and non-fossil fuel NOx to elevation of nitrogen deposition in southwestern China over past five decades.

Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) emissions and deposition have been increasing over past decades. However, spatiotemporal variations of N deposition levels and major sources remain unclear in many regions, which hinders making strategies of emission mitigation and evaluating effects of elevated N deposition. By investigating moss N contents and δ15 N values in southwestern (SW) China in 1954-1964, 1970-1994, and 2005-2015, we reconstructed fluxes and source contributions of atmospheric ammonium ( NH 4 + ) and nitrate ( NO 3 - ) deposition and evaluated their historical changes. For urban and non-u

Infiltration behaviour of elemental mercury DNAPL in fully and partially water saturated porous media.

Mercury is a contaminant of global concern due to its harmful effects on human health and for the detrimental consequences of its release in the environment. Sources of liquid elemental mercury are usually anthropogenic, such as chlor-alkali plants. To date insight into the infiltration behaviour of liquid elemental mercury in the subsurface is lacking, although this is critical for assessing both characterization and remediation approaches for mercury DNAPL contaminated sites. Therefore, in this study the infiltration behaviour of elemental mercury in fully and partially water saturated syste

Stress-related gene expression changes in rainbow trout hepatocytes exposed to various municipal wastewater treatment influents and effluents.

The present study sought to examine the performance of six different wastewater treatment processes from 12 wastewater treatment plants using a toxicogenomic approach in rainbow trout hepatocytes. Freshly prepared rainbow trout hepatocytes were exposed to increasing concentrations of influent (untreated wastewaters) and effluent (C(18)) extracts for 48 h at 15 °C. A test battery of eight genes was selected to track changes in xenobiotic biotransformation, estrogenicity, heavy metal detoxification, and oxidative stress. The wastewaters were processed by six different treatment systems: facultat

Mercury distribution and methylmercury mobility in the sediments of three sites on the Lebanese coast, eastern Mediterranean.

Mercury (Hg) contamination in coastal sediments has been widely studied in clay deposits; however, equivalent results on carbonated sediments are scarce. This article aims to study Hg distribution in Lebanese carbonate coastal marine sediments (Eastern Mediterranean) in order to characterize their contamination level and to explore the postdepositional mobility of methylmercury (MeHg) in the deposits. Vertical distribution profiles of total (HgT) and MeHg have been established for the solid phase of sediment cores collected in various near-shore environments chosen for their hypothetical vario

Potential interactions between diadromous fishes of U.K. conservation importance and the electromagnetic fields and subsea noise from marine renewable energy developments.

The considerable extent of construction and operation of marine renewable energy developments (MRED) within U.K. and adjacent waters will lead, among other things, to the emission of electromagnetic fields (EMF) and subsea sounds into the marine environment. Migratory fishes that respond to natural environmental cues, such as the Earth's geomagnetic field or underwater sounds, move through the same waters that the MRED occupy, thereby raising the question of whether there are any effects of MRED on migratory fishes. Diadromous species, such as the Salmonidae and Anguillidae, which undertake la

Quantification of trace metal contamination and ecological risks in river sediments of the Himalaya.

Riverbed mining exerts significant pressure on Himalayan river systems, yet its influence on trace metal dynamics in sediments remains poorly understood across elevation gradients. This study quantifies the concentration and ecological risk of six trace metals Cr, Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, and Pb in surface sediments from the Chandra River (Upper Himalayas), Beas River (Middle Himalayas), and Chakki Khad (Lower Himalayas), Himachal Pradesh, India. Ten surface sediment samples were collected from each river and evaluated using pollution indices (Igeo, PINemerow, PLI, PERI, MERMQ, and MEC), sediment quali

Assessment of agricultural region dynamics using object contour properties from Sentinel-2 images.

Economic activity in agricultural regions is influenced by various natural and anthropogenic factors. Their impact on spatial and temporal changes can be assessed by studying satellite images acquired at different times. The methodology for detecting changes is continually improving with the use of new image processing techniques. Changes resulting from destructive events can be used to assess their effectiveness. Agriculture in southern Ukraine has been catastrophically affected by military actions, which have led to the degradation of the agricultural landscape structure. One of the manifest

Synergistic Effects of a Microbial Amendment and Crushed Basalt: Soil Geochemical and Microbial Responses.

Over geologic timescales, the natural weathering of silicate minerals in soils and regolith regulates atmospheric CO2. Although this process is slow relative to anthropogenic emissions, several strategies have been proposed to accelerate this process for climate mitigation. These include the application of finely-ground silicate rock to increase mineral surface area (enhanced weathering, EW) and the use of microbes that catalyze mineral dissolution and CO2 biomineralization (microbial carbon dioxide mineralization, MCM). While both approaches show promise, their combined application has rarely

Carbon redistribution driven by autochthonous processes in the world's largest water transfer project: Disrupting natural carbon boundaries.

Natural rivers play a crucial role in regulating the global carbon cycle. However, as critical engineered waterways, inter-basin water transfer projects (IBWTs) substantially alter regional hydrological connectivity and biogeochemical processes, yet their contribution to the carbon cycle remains poorly understood. Here, we address this knowledge gap with a comprehensive field investigation of the South-to-North Water Diversion Middle Route Project (SNWD-MRP), the world's largest IBWT. The results show that carbon dynamics within the canal are dominated by autochthonous processes, primarily alg

Designing a Whole-Cell Biosensor for Detection of Toxic Metals Using Intein Splicing Inhibition of Mycobacterium tuberculosis SufB Protein.

Heavy metal contamination, driven by anthropogenic disruption of natural geochemical cycles, has led to widespread bioaccumulation, posing a serious global health threat. Addressing this crisis demands the development of simple and sensitive strategies capable of monitoring metal pollution in the environment. Leveraging nongenetically modified native organisms, this research offers a promising low-cost, eco-friendly screening approach for detecting heavy metals in contaminated samples. Current study uses post-translational splicing of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) SufB precursor protein

Unveiling the diversity, ecology, and biotechnological potential of culturable marine yeasts in Western Mediterranean coastal ecosystems.

Coastal ecosystems are dynamic environments characterized by strong seasonal variability in physicochemical parameters and biological communities. In the western Mediterranean, the Region of Murcia (southeastern Spain) is characterized by notable biodiversity and ecological heterogeneity, encompassing diverse habitats, including rocky shores, sandy beaches, seagrass meadows, and the Mar Menor, one of Europe's largest hypersaline lagoons. Within these systems, marine yeasts play critical ecological roles in organic matter recycling and produce metabolites of biotechnological and medical interes

Why internists should care about Helicobacter pylori: recapitulating gastric cancer prevention.

Infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a leading but also modifiable cause of gastric cancer. However, evidence indicates that the goal of a primary prevention of gastric cancer is still far from being achieved. Main obstacles derive from inadequate screening and management of H. pylori infection but also from other external risk factors, responsible for about a quarter of future cases of gastric cancer. The need for population-based H. pylori screen-and-treat programs remains not fully addressed, mainly due to concerns about cost, to underpowered screening efficacy of policies only

A comparison of manual and carbon dioxide trap sampling of Ornithodoros soft ticks from warthog resting sites in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: In East and Southern Africa, the African swine fever (ASF) virus is maintained in an ancient sylvatic cycle involving warthogs (Phacochoerus spp.) and Ornithodoros soft ticks inhabiting warthog burrows. Although carbon dioxide (CO2) traps have previously been used to collect ticks from pigsties in Portugal, this method has never been tested in the context of the ASF sylvatic cycle in Africa. As warthogs adapt their resting site preferences in response to different levels of habitat transformation, our study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of CO2 traps versus traditional manual

The effect of particle size on oral bioavailability and bioaccessibility of soil Ni from different sources.

The goal of the work was to contribute to a unified approach to assessing the risk to human health of soil ingestion, for contaminated sites with elevated [Ni]. Robust relationships between in vitro bioaccessibility and in vivo bioavailability of Ni in various soils, with mechanistic understanding, would enable site-specific assessments of human exposure through soil ingestion. Four soils (three ultramafic Brunisols with geogenic Ni and one Organic soil with anthropogenic Ni) were sieved into PS < 10 μm, 10-41 μm, 41-70 μm, 70-105 μm, 105-150 μm, and 150-250 μm, the [Ni]T for which ranged from

Removal of arsenic from acidic liquors using chemical and autotrophic and mixed heterotrophic bacteria-produced biogenic schwertmannites.

Arsenic penetrates human society through a variety of geological and anthropogenic processes, posing significant health hazards. Acid mine drainage, which contains high concentrations of heavy metals and sulfate, is formed by the biological oxidation of pyrite and other metal-containing sulfidic minerals and is a significant environmental hazard. Adsorption is a simple and effective method for removing arsenic from water. In this study, co-precipitation and adsorption of arsenic with biogenic and chemically produced iron-containing settleable precipitates, i.e. schwertmannites were studied. Au

Aerosol Impacts on Water Relations of Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora).

Major parts of anthropogenic and natural aerosols are hygroscopic and deliquesce at high humidity, particularly when depositing to leaf surfaces close to transpiring stomata. Deliquescence and subsequent salt creep may establish thin, extraordinary pathways into the stomata, which foster stomatal uptake of nutrients and water but may also cause stomatal liquid water loss by wicking. Such additional water loss is not accompanied by a wider stomatal aperture with a larger CO2 influx and hypothetically reduces water use efficiency (WUE). Here, the possible direct impacts of aerosols on physical a

Exploration of O3-precursor relationship and observation-oriented O3 control strategies in a non-provincial capital city, southwestern China.

To investigate photochemical ozone (O3) formation and provide localized control strategies, an intensive sampling of O3 and its precursors (i.e. volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2)) were conducted at an urban site in Leshan, Sichuan province during 4-13 August 2019. The mixing ratios of O3, total VOCs (TVOCs) and NOx were 40.0 ± 5.3, 22.5 ± 2.6 and 14.6 ± 3.8 ppbv, respectively (±95% confidence intervals). O3 and its precursors existed a well negative correlation, indicating intensive local O3 formation. To further explore the O3-precursors relationship and o
