Neonatal neurobehavior and diffusion MRI changes in brain reorganization due to intrauterine growth restriction in a rabbit model.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) affects 5-10% of all newborns and is associated with a high risk of abnormal neurodevelopment. The timing and patterns of brain reorganization underlying IUGR are poorly documented. We developed a rabbit model of IUGR allowing neonatal neurobehavioral assessment and high resolution brain diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The aim of the study was to describe the pattern and functional correlates of fetal brain reorganization induced by IUGR. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: IUGR was induced in 10 New Zealand fetal rabbits by ligation

[18F]Fallypride PET measurement of striatal and extrastriatal dopamine D 2/3 receptor availability in recently abstinent alcoholics.

Positron emission tomography (PET) shows reduced binding of the dopamine D(2/3) antagonist [(11) C]raclopride in striatum of withdrawn psychostimulant abusers, but not consistently in patients with alcohol dependence (AD). We make first use of the high affinity ligand [(18) F]fallypride to obtain serial measures of D(2/3) receptor availability in striatal and extrastriatal regions of AD patients undergoing detoxification. Seventeen patients (mean age 44 ± 5y) with AD and 14 age-matched healthy volunteers participated. Each patient underwent [(18) F]fallypride PET upon hospital admission, and a

Some neurophysiological constraints on models of word naming.

The pronunciation of irregular words in deep orthographies like English cannot be specified by simple rules. On the other hand, the fact that novel letter strings can be pronounced seems to imply the existence of such rules. These facts motivate dual-route models of word naming, which postulate separate lexical (whole-word) and non-lexical (rule-based) mechanisms for accessing phonology. We used fMRI during oral naming of irregular words, regular words, and nonwords, to test this theory against a competing single-mechanism account known as the triangle model, which proposes that all words are

Structural abnormalities in frontal, temporal, and limbic regions and interconnecting white matter tracts in schizophrenic patients with prominent negative symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Imaging studies of schizophrenia have repeatedly demonstrated global abnormalities of cerebral and ventricular volumes. However, pathological changes at more local levels of brain organization have not yet been so clearly characterized because of the few brain regions of interest heretofore included in morphometric analyses as well as heterogeneity of patient samples. METHOD: Dual echo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data were acquired at 1.5 T from 27 right-handed patients who met DSM-IV criteria for schizophrenia with enduring negative symptoms and from 27 healthy comparison sub

The role of affective touch in mental illness: a systematic review of CT fiber dysregulation in psychological disorders and the therapeutic potential of CT fiber stimulation.

INTRODUCTION: Over the past few decades, research on affective touch has clarified its impact on key psychological functions essential for environmental adaptation, such as self-awareness, self-other differentiation, attachment, and stress response. These effects are primarily driven by the stimulation of C-tactile (CT) fibers. Despite significant advancements in understanding the fundamental mechanisms of affective touch, its clinical applications in mental health remain underdeveloped. This systematic review aims to rigorously assess the scientific literature on the relationship between CT f

Early Life Stress Promotes Heroin Seeking But Does Not Alter the Excitability of Insular Pyramidal Cells Targeting the Nucleus Accumbens.

A number of retrospective studies have demonstrated adverse childhood experiences are associated with increased vulnerability to substance use disorders, including opioid use disorders (OUDs). These adverse childhood experiences, also referred to as early life stress (ELS), can be modeled in laboratory animals by various paradigms including limited bedding and nesting (LBN) procedures. Studies using rodent models of ELS have been shown to recapitulate various aspects of OUDs, including relapse propensity and perseverance of drug-seeking behavior. In the current study, we utilized the LBN parad

Correlations between exploratory eye movement, hallucination, and cortical gray matter volume in people with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Widespread cortical gray matter alternations in people with schizophrenia are correlated with both psychotic symptoms and cognitive/behavioral abnormalities, including the impairments of exploratory eye movement (EEM). Particularly, the loss of gray matter density is specifically related to deficits of the responsive search score (RSS) of EEM in schizophrenia. It is unknown, however, whether the schizophrenia-related RSS deficits are associated with certain psychotic symptoms, such as hallucinations. METHODS: In 33 participants with schizophrenia, the measurement of EEM, assessmen

Altered resting-state functional connectivity in lung cancer patients with comorbid depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: It is quite common clinically for cancer patients (including those with lung cancer) to have comorbid depressive symptoms. Numerous studies have shown that patients with depression often have altered resting-state functional connectivity (RS-FC). However, only a few studies have reported abnormal RS-FC in cancer patients with comorbid depressive symptoms. This exploratory and cross-sectional study examined a heterogeneously treated Chinese lung cancer population. Data on psychotropic medication, cancer-related symptoms, and detailed treatment histories were not systematically colle

The Clinical Value of ChatGPT for Epilepsy Presurgical Decision Making: Systematic Evaluation on Seizure Semiology Interpretation.

BACKGROUND: For patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy (DRE), surgical resection of the epileptogenic zone (EZ) is an effective treatment to control seizures. Accurate localization of the EZ is crucial and is typically achieved through comprehensive presurgical approaches such as seizure semiology interpretation, electroencephalography (EEG), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and intracranial EEG (iEEG). However, interpreting seizure semiology poses challenges because it relies heavily on expert knowledge and is often based on inconsistent and incoherent descriptions, leading to variabili

Implicit awareness in anosognosia for hemiplegia: unconscious interference without conscious re-representation.

Some patients with anosognosia for hemiplegia, i.e. apparent unawareness of hemiplegia, have been clinically observed to show 'tacit' or 'implicit' awareness of their deficits. Here we have experimentally examined whether implicit and explicit responses to the same deficit-related material can dissociate. Fourteen stroke patients with right hemisphere lesions and contralesional paralysis were tested for implicit and explicit responses to brief sentences with deficit-related themes. These responses were elicited using: (i) a verbal inhibition test in which patients had to inhibit completing eac

Opposite Roles in Short-Term Plasticity for N-Type and P/Q-Type Voltage-Dependent Calcium Channels in GABAergic Neuronal Connections in the Rat Cerebral Cortex.

Neurotransmitter release is triggered by Ca2+ influx through voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels (VDCCs). Distinct expression patterns of VDCC subtypes localized on the synaptic terminal affect intracellular Ca2+ dynamics induced by action potential-triggered Ca2+ influx. However, it has been unknown whether the expression pattern of VDCC subtypes depends on each axon terminal or neuronal subtype. Furthermore, little information is available on how these VDCC subtypes regulate the release probability of neurotransmitters. To address these questions, we performed multiple whole-cell patch-clamp rec

Low-frequency bipolar versus high-frequency monopolar cortical and subcortical motor mapping in craniotomies for brain tumors.

OBJECTIVE: Maximal safe resection of intra-axial brain tumors near the motor cortex is aided by intraoperative motor mapping. Here, the authors compared outcomes in patients undergoing either low-frequency bipolar stimulation (LFBS) or high-frequency monopolar stimulation (HFMS) for cortical and/or subcortical motor mapping during brain tumor resection. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients undergoing an asleep craniotomy with motor mapping or an awake craniotomy with motor and speech mapping with a single surgeon was performed. Three cohorts were compared: 1) asleep LFBS (AsLFBS), 2)

Shared and disorder-specific resting-state neural activity characteristics in patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are two primary subtypes of eating disorders (ED), often presenting with overlapping clinical features that complicate diagnosis. Despite shared symptoms, the underlying neural mechanisms of two subtypes remain incompletely understood. Delineating both shared and unique neural alterations may support biomarker discovery and inform targeted interventions. METHODS: We recruited 28 patients with AN, 26 with BN, and 31 matched healthy controls (HC), aged from 14 to 40 years old. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance image (Rs-fMRI)

Sex-dependent effects of alcohol intake on pain-related functional activation.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol analgesia (AA) is a well-established phenomenon and important motivator of pain self-medication with alcohol. Alcohol intoxication produces widespread alterations in many brain areas involved in pain processing. Sex and family history (FH) of problematic alcohol use both influence AA. Investigation of neural response to experimental pain during alcohol intoxication, and potential interactive effects of sex and FH, may clarify important pathways of risk for pain chronicity and alcohol use disorder. METHODS: Subjects (N = 97, Mean age = 26.23, SD = 4.97, 52.26% female, 41.23

A Systematic Literature Review of Neuroimaging of Psychopathic Traits.

INTRODUCTION: Core psychopathy is characterized by grandiosity, callousness, manipulativeness, and lack of remorse, empathy, and guilt. It is often comorbid with conduct disorder and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). Psychopathy is present in forensic as well as prison and general populations. In recent years, an increasing amount of neuroimaging studies has been conducted in order to elucidate the obscure neurobiological etiology of psychopathy. The studies have yielded heterogenous results, and no consensus has been reached. AIMS: This study systematically reviewed and qualitatively s

Different clinical courses of various radiologic findings in fibromuscular dysplasia during a 7-year follow-up: A case report.

RATIONALES: The natural history of fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is unclear. Furthermore, the correlation between radiologic findings and clinical significance has not been documented. Previously, the development of new vascular symptoms was reported in a small number of patients, but some of these symptoms were from other vascular causes. New arterial lesions were rarely observed during follow-up in the previous reports. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 40-year-old man was admitted due to dysarthria and left-sided weakness. He had developed flank pain due to bilateral renal infarction about 10 months ear

Three cases of sporadic meningioangiomatosis with different imaging appearances: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Meningioangiomatosis (MA) is a rare meningiovascular malformation or hamartomatous lesion in the central nervous system. Radiographic findings of MA may show a variety of characteristics according to different histological components. We present three cases of sporadic MA with different imaging appearances in an attempt to identify specific imaging characteristics. CASE PRESENTATION: In case 1, an irregular hyperdense solid mass was localized in the left middle cranial fossa, demonstrating low and equal signal intensity on T1-weighted imaging (T1WI; TR/TE 2,048.9 ms/26.1 ms), high
