Changes in fecal microbiota after therapeutic exposure to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid in veal calves receiving multiple antibiotics.

Amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (AMC) is an important antibiotic in human and veterinary medicine. However, it can select antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the gut microbiota and alter its composition. In calves, AMC can be used to treat complicated infections. The impact of AMC on the calves' gut is unknown; thus, we analyzed the effect of a five-day AMC treatment in veal calves suffering from omphalitis. AMC-treated calves (n = 15) and a control untreated group (n = 15) were enrolled from two farms. Stools were collected before AMC administration (D0), one day (D6), one month (D35), and two month

Responses of nutrient utilization, rumen fermentation and microorganisms to different roughage of dairy buffaloes.

Dairy buffaloes are typically fed a high-forage, low-quality diet with high fiber. These conditions result in an inherent energy and protein inefficiency. In order to make full and rational use of feed resources and improve the production level and breeding efficiency of dairy buffaloes, the effects of various roughages on nutrient digestibility, ruminal fermentation parameters, and microorganisms in dairy buffaloes were studied in this experiment. Three ternary hybrid buffaloes, with an average body weight of 365 ± 22.1 kg, were selected and fitted with permanent rumen fistulas. They were fed

Population Dynamics of Salmonella enterica within Beef Cattle Cohorts Followed from Single-Dose Metaphylactic Antibiotic Treatment until Slaughter.

Antibiotic use in cattle can select for multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica, which is considered a serious threat by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A randomized controlled longitudinal field trial was designed to determine the long-term effects of a single dose of ceftiofur or tulathromycin on Salmonella population characteristics in cattle feces and peripheral lymph nodes and on hides. A total of 134 beef cattle from two sources were divided among 12 pens, with cattle in each of the 3-pen blocks receiving a single dose of either ceftiofur or tulathromycin or neither

Summary of U.S. Injuries and Fatalities Involving Entrapment and Suffocation in Grain Transport Vehicles.

Since 1978, the Purdue University Agricultural Safety and Health Program has managed a surveillance effort and database to collect information on documented injuries and fatalities in all forms of U.S. agricultural confined spaces. The database currently contains 1,968 cases documented in the U.S. between 1964 and 2016. Of these cases, 174 (8.8%) involved entrapment or suffocation in grain transport vehicles (GTVs), including gravity-flow wagons, semi-truck trailers, and other agricultural transport vehicles that have limited access and are not considered normal work spaces or are classified a

Training method for animal-based measures in dairy cattle welfare assessments.

Quantitative assessments of animal welfare are increasingly being used in the dairy industry. It is important to have good precision and accuracy within and among assessors. This study explored the effectiveness of a 3-d training workshop for animal-based measures (ABM) of welfare in dairy cows, in which 14 people were trained to evaluate 6 ABM, specifically hock injuries (HI), lameness (LM), body condition score (BCS), and udder, flank, and leg cleanliness (collectively CLN). All scoring systems were modified to a dichotomous outcome, acceptable or unacceptable. Acceptable HI included no swel

Antibiotic Resistance Profiles of Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. Isolated From Dairy Farms and Surroundings in a Rural Area of Western Anatolia, Turkey.

Background Antibiotic resistance is a significant public health issue worldwide. Antibiotic-resistant zoonotic bacteria such as Escherichia coli (E. coli), Campylobacter, Salmonella, Listeria, Coxiella, and Mycobacterium can be particularly isolated from biofertilizers. Epidemiological studies have shown that cases of foodborne infections and intoxications are significantly related to animal-derived foods. The presence of these species in aquatic environments indicates areas or organisms contaminated with animal or human feces. Especially, the presence of E. coli in aquatic environments has be

Management factors associated with time-to-onset and fecal egg/oocyst counts of gastrointestinal parasites in heifer calves on Kenyan smallholder farms.

A prospective cohort study on zero-grazed smallholder dairy farms was conducted to determine factors associated with onset and counts of gastrointestinal parasitism in heifer calves. The researchers recruited 187 newborn heifer calves from 150 farms in Kenya. Over 16 months, farm visits every two months were used to collect rectal fecal samples and animal- and farm-level measures. Fecal samples underwent centrifugal fecal flotation with Sheather's sugar to determine counts of strongyle-type eggs and coccidia oocysts. Cox proportional hazard (Cox PH) analysis and mixed-effects negative binomial

Establishing Statistical Equivalence of Data from Different Sampling Approaches for Assessment of Bacterial Phenotypic Antimicrobial Resistance.

To assess phenotypic bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in different strata (e.g., host populations, environmental areas, manure, or sewage effluents) for epidemiological purposes, isolates of target bacteria can be obtained from a stratum using various sample types. Also, different sample processing methods can be applied. The MIC of each target antimicrobial drug for each isolate is measured. Statistical equivalence testing of the MIC data for the isolates allows evaluation of whether different sample types or sample processing methods yield equivalent estimates of the bacterial antimi

Molecular detection of antibiotic resistance genes in Staphylococcus aureus isolated from poultry farms of Kathmandu Valley, Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as a critical global health challenge and is currently addressed through a "One Health" approach that investigates its occurrence in humans, animals, and the environment, as well as the transmission pathways linking these reservoirs. In commercial poultry farms, antibiotics are routinely used to treat bacterial infections that are economically significant as well as to promote weight gain. However, data on AMR in Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) of poultry origin remain scarce in Nepal. Antimicrobial resistance in S aureus, particularly t

Integrated crop-livestock farming systems influence the incidence of Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli, and indicator bacteria on fresh produce.

Concerns remain about foodborne pathogen contamination risks to integrated crop-livestock farm (ICLF) fresh produce due to farm animal proximity to crop fields and use of biological soil amendments of animal origin (BSAAO). This study aimed to evaluate the extent of microbial contamination in Maryland's Eastern Shore ICLFs and compare results with those from corresponding samples from crop-only farms (COFs), farmers' markets, and supermarkets. Altogether, 1,782 soil, animal reservoir, water, and produce samples from ICLFs, COFs, farmers' markets, and supermarkets were analyzed following standa

Effect of continuous in-feed administration of tylosin to feedlot cattle on macrolide and tetracycline resistant enterococci in a randomized field trial.

Liver abscess causes substantial economic loss to the beef cattle industry through liver condemnation, reduced animal performance, and carcass yield. Continuous in-feed use of tylosin is the most effective and a commonly used practice in beef cattle production to prevent liver abscess. However, such mass medication can increase the level of antimicrobial resistant bacteria. We investigated the effect of continuous in-feed use of tylosin in feedlot cattle on (i) concentrations and prevalence of erythromycin-resistant (ERYr) and tetracycline-resistant (TETr) enterococci; (ii) associated antimicr

Effects of low-phytic acid corn, low-phytic acid soybean meal, and phytase on nutrient digestibility and excretion in growing pigs.

Forty-eight grower pigs were used to evaluate the effects of feeding low phytic acid (LPA) corn, LPA soybean meal, normal corn (NC), normal soybean meal (NSBM), and phytase on nutrient digestibility and excretion. Barrows were blocked by BW (initial BW=45.3+/-1.6 kg) and randomly assigned to 1 of 8 dietary treatments in a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement (6 pigs/treatment). Pigs were fed twice daily (0700 and 1700 h) at 3 times the ME requirement for maintenance. Phytase was added to the diet at 510 phytase units/kg of feed (where 1 phytase unit is the quantity of enzyme that liberates 1 mumol

Effects of extending dairy cow longevity by adjusted reproduction management decisions on partial net return and greenhouse gas emissions: A dynamic stochastic herd simulation study.

Prolonging dairy cattle longevity is regarded as one of the options to contribute to more sustainable milk production. Because failure to conceive is one of the main reasons for culling, this study investigates how adjustments in reproduction management affect partial net return at herd level and greenhouse gas emissions per unit of milk, using a dynamic stochastic simulation model. The effects of reproduction decisions that extend cattle longevity on milk yield, calving interval and pregnancy rate were derived from actual performance of Dutch commercial dairy cows over multiple lactations. The pervasive impact of global climate change on plant-nematode interaction continuum.

Pest profiles in today's global food production system are continually affected by climate change and extreme weather. Under varying climatic conditions, plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) cause substantial economic damage to a wide variety of agricultural and horticultural commodities. In parallel, their herbivory also accredit to diverse ecosystem services such as nutrient cycling, allocation and turnover of plant biomass, shaping of vegetation community, and alteration of rhizospheric microorganism consortium by modifying the root exudation pattern. Thus PPNs, together with the vast majority

Preventive-curative functional amino acid-supplemented diet improves health, growth performance, and resilience of growing pigs under an immune challenge.

Immune system stimulation (ISS) alters the metabolic demand for amino acids (AA), and amino acid-based nutritional strategies may mitigate performance reduction in pigs subjected to sanitary challenge conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of extra supplementation of a combination of functional AA (FAA, +20% threonine, methionine, and tryptophan) preventively (pre-ISS), curatively (during-ISS) or both on the performance of growing pigs challenged with Salmonella Typhimurium (ST) and poor housing conditions. Prevalence and molecular characterization of ESBL/pAmpC producing faecal Escherichia coli strains with widespread detection of CTX-M-15 isolated from healthy poultry flocks in Eastern Algeria.

The intensification of livestock farming has led to the widespread use of massive amounts of antibiotics worldwide. Poultry production, including white meat, eggs and the use of their manure as fertiliser, has been identified as one of the most crucial reservoirs for the emergence and spread of resistant bacteria, including E. coli in poultry as an important opportunistic pathogen representing the greatest biological hazard to human and wildlife health. Thus, this study aimed to analyse E. coli in the faecal carriage of healthy poultry flocks and to investigate the phenotypic and genotypic cha
