Missing life stories. The narratives of palliative patients, parents and physicians in paediatric oncology.

Illness narratives have become very popular. The stories of children, however, are rarely ever studied. This paper aims to provide insight into how children, parents and physicians make sense of progressive childhood cancer. It also explores how this meaning-giving process interacts with cultural dominant stories on cancer and dying. The presented data come from 16 open-ended face-to-face interviews with palliative paediatric patients, their parents and physicians. The interviews were carried out in eight paediatric oncology centres in Switzerland. Data analysis followed Arthur Frank's dialogi

Ontological security and connectivity provided by pets: a study in the self-management of the everyday lives of people diagnosed with a long-term mental health condition.

BACKGROUND: Despite evidence that connecting people to relevant wellbeing-related resources brings therapeutic benefit, there is limited understanding, in the context of mental health recovery, of the potential value and contribution of pet ownership to personal support networks for self-management. This study aimed to explore the role of pets in the support and management activities in the personal networks of people with long-term mental health problems. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews centred on 'ego' network mapping were conducted in two locations (in the North West and in the South o

Depression is associated with increased vagal withdrawal during unpleasant emotional imagery after cardiac surgery.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to examine the influence of depression on heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV) during emotional imagery in patients after cardiac surgery. METHODS: Based on the scores of the Center for Epidemiological Studies of Depression (CES-D) scale, 28 patients after cardiac surgery were assigned either to the group with depression (CES-D scores ≥ 16; N = 14) or the one without depression (CES-D scores<16; N = 14). Each patient completed a rest period and an emotional imagery including pleasant, neutral and unpleasant scripts. Inter-beat intervals (IBIs) and

Verbal competence in narrative retelling in 5-year-olds with unilateral cleft lip and palate.

BACKGROUND: Research regarding expressive language performance in children born with cleft palate is sparse. The relationship between articulation/phonology and expressive language skills also needs to be further explored. AIMS: To investigate verbal competence in narrative retelling in 5-year-old children born with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) and its possible relationship with articulation/phonology at 3 and 5 years of age. METHODS & PROCEDURES: A total of 49 children, 29 with UCLP treated according to three different procedures for primary palatal surgery and a comparison group

Involuntary mass spirit possession among the Miskitu.

This paper seeks to understand the outbreaks and the development of grisi siknis, a form of mass spirit possession among the Miskitu of north-eastern Nicaragua. Earlier documented outbreaks typically involved a few adolescents, however, in recent years, violent large-scale epidemics have taken place, involving many people of all ages. This has coincided with recent developments in Miskitu society marked by conflicts, contradictions and tense social relations. The anthropological field technique of participant-observation was used. The research took place during 11 months from 2005 to 2008 in t

Quantitative criteria of narrative coherence and complexity in persons with paranoid schizophrenia.

Narrative coherence and complexity have been considered as key concepts for understanding therapeutic improvement and recovery of persons with severe mental disorders. The main aim of this article is to study coherence and complexity of 18 life narratives of persons with paranoid schizophrenia by thirty quantitative analysis criteria. Two groups of patients were evaluated: a group of 9 patients recently admitted to specific Care Homes for people with severe mental disorders (G1) and another group of 9 patients who had been at the same Care Homes for a longer period of time (G2). Differences in

Exploring the utility of narrative analysis in diagnostic decision making: picture-bound reference, elaboration, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

PURPOSE: To evaluate classification accuracy and clinical feasibility of a narrative analysis tool for identifying children with a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). METHOD: Picture-elicited narratives generated by 16 age-matched pairs of school-aged children (FASD vs. typical development [TD]) were coded for semantic elaboration and reference strategy by judges who were unaware of age, gender, and group membership of the participants. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to examine the classification accuracy of the resulting set of narrative measures for making 2 cl

When I was in my home I suffered a lot: Mexican women's descriptions of abuse in family of origin.

In this descriptive study we employ episodic narrative interviews and narrative analysis to explore experiences of abuse and violence within the families of origin of Mexican women entering adulthood. Twenty-four Mexican women, 18 years of age and about to graduate from a residential school in central Mexico, were interviewed about life in their families of origin. Participants were from several Mexican states and of low socioeconomic status. Nineteen of the participants described either witnessing or experiencing violence or abuse within their families. We present an analysis of the interview

Cultural similarities and differences between a sample of Black/African and colored women in South Africa: convergence of risk related to substance use, sexual behavior, and violence.

South Africa is one of the six southern African countries where the HIV levels for childbearing women are 20% or higher. We conducted two focus groups aimed at developing an understanding of the intersections of substance abuse, sexual behavior, and violence affecting the lives of women of color in Cape Town, South Africa. Both Colored and Black/African participants reported using cannabis, methaqualone, and alcohol, although they differed on other drugs used. Black/African women also used heroin, and crack cocaine, whereas Colored women used methamphetamines. For participants in both groups,

Bosnian refugees and the stressors of exile: a narrative study.

The authors used semistructured interviews to examine exile-related stressors affecting a sample of 28 adult Bosnian refugees in Chicago. The interviews covered 3 areas: life in prewar Bosnia, the journey of exile, and, most centrally, life in Chicago. Primary sources of exile-related distress included social isolation and the loss of community, separation from family members, the loss of important life projects, a lack of environmental mastery, poverty and related stressors such as inadequate housing, and the loss of valued social roles. The implications of these findings for mental health in

Framing decriminalization: A mixed-methods study on media narratives, government resources, misinformation, and public support of British Columbia's drug decriminalization policy.

INTRODUCTION: British Columbia's (BC) three-year drug decriminalization policy-introduced in January 2023 and amended just over a year later in 2024-had multiple goals, including reducing drug use stigma, shifting perceptions of drug use from a criminal to a health issue, and improving health outcomes for people who use drugs. As part of the policy, the BC government was required to implement public education tools to raise awareness and build understanding of the policy. However, little is known about the scope or impact of these public education efforts or how the information environment sha

Rule-based Cervical Spine Defect Classification Using Medical Narratives.

Classifying the defects occurring at the cervical spine provides the basis for surgical treatment planning and therapy recommendation. This process requires evidence from patient records. Further, the degree of a defect needs to be encoded in a standardized from to facilitate data exchange and multimodal interoperability. In this paper, a concept for automatic defect classification based on information extracted from textual data of patient records is presented. In a retrospective study, the classifier is applied to clinical documents and the classification results are evaluated.
