Examination of life-threatening injuries in 431 pediatric facial fractures at a level 1 trauma center.

PURPOSE: Pediatric facial fractures represent a challenge in management due to the unique nature of the growing facial skeleton. Oftentimes, more conservative measures are favored to avoid rigid internal fixation and disruption of blood supply to the bone and soft tissues. In addition, the great force required to fracture bones of the facial skeleton often produces concomitant injuries that present a management priority. The purpose of this study was to examine a level 1 trauma center's experience with pediatric facial trauma resulting in fractures of the underlying skeleton with regards to ep

Controlled evaluation of injury in an international Safe Community: Kashmar, Iran.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the degree to which the Safe Community (SC) model is effective in reducing injuries. Although positive results have been reported for some communities in developed countries, there is no consistent relationship between being an international designated SC and subsequent changes in observed rate of injury, and no controlled studies have examined the effectiveness of the SC model in developing countries. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the injuries in the SC programme of Kashmar (population 149,358) with injuries in counties in Iran that have not applie

Enhancing maternal survival in traumatic cardiovascular collapse during pregnancy: A case series on resuscitative hysterotomy (RH) from a level 1 trauma center.

BACKGROUND: Trauma during pregnancy presents multifaceted risks to both the developing fetus and the expectant mother due to pregnancy-induced physiological adaptations that affect the response to traumatic injuries. The infrequent occurrence of cardiac arrest during pregnancy necessitates interventions such as perimortem cesarean section (PMCS), now termed resuscitative hysterotomy. While early resuscitative hysterotomy focused primarily on fetal survival, more recent literature reports substantial maternal benefits. Resuscitative hysterotomy can lead to the restoration of maternal pulse and

Genitourinary Injuries Among Female U.S. Service Members During Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom: Findings from the Trauma Outcomes and Urogenital Health (TOUGH) Project.

INTRODUCTION: Until recently, female U.S. service members (SMs) have not been permitted to serve in direct combat roles. However, during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), a large number of female SMs have been wounded while serving in combat support roles. This included an unprecedented number of women with genitourinary (GU) injuries. No previous studies have reported either the incidence or clinical picture of these injuries. The objective of this study is to describe the epidemiology of GU injuries among female U.S. SMs during OIF/OEF and understand the pot

Early versus delayed repair of facial fractures in the multiply injured patient.

The management of facial fractures in the polytrauma patient requires the coordination of multiple surgical disciplines to optimize the functional and cosmetic outcome while minimizing overall morbidity and mortality. Although the plastic surgery literature historically advocates the early repair of facial fractures, the risk of general anesthesia in patients with associated injuries sometimes makes early repair unsafe. We compared early operative repair versus delayed operative repair of facial fractures in multitrauma patients. We specifically examined wound infection, overall complication r

Age-stratified analysis of the severity of injuries in electric tricycle accidents among the elderly, compared with other age groups.

OBJECTIVE: Electric tricycles are widely used for short-distance passenger and freight transport in China, particularly in urban-fringe and rural areas. Their rapid growth has raised safety concerns because these vehicles provide limited occupant protection and frequently operate in mixed-traffic environments. This study examined age-related heterogeneity in injury severity among electric tricycle drivers and identified factors associated with severe/fatal injury outcomes across different age groups. METHODS: Police-reported electric tricycle crashes from 2020 to 2024 were analyzed. After dat

Impact of treatment approaches on renal function in renal trauma patients.

INTRODUCTION: Renal injuries account for 5% of all traumatic injuries, with blunt trauma being the most common cause (82-95%) [Meng, M.V., S.B. Brandes, and J.W. McAninch,, Renal trauma: indications and techniques for surgical exploration (17) 1999, Wessells, H., et al., Renal injury and operative management in the United States: results of a population-based study, 54(3) 2003]. Motor vehicle collisions (MVCs), pedestrian-vehicle accidents (PVAs), and falls often cause blunt renal injuries, frequently associated with intra-abdominal or thoracic trauma [Santucci, R., et al., Evaluation and mana

Epidemiology of pediatric spinal trauma with neurological deficits in Catalonia: a 36-year experience.

PURPOSE: Existing literature on pediatric traumatic spinal cord injury (PTSCI) demonstrates large variations in characteristics, incidence, time-periods and etiology, worldwide. Epidemiological studies addressing injuries to the total spine, conducted in Southern European regions are remarkably scarce; therefore we aimed to investigate long-term trends analyzing etiology, fracture location and type, single or multiple fractures, associated lesions and neurological status in Catalonia, Spain. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study. We analyzed post-acute patients after PTSCI

Age Effects in Facial Fracture Trauma: Disparities in Multisystem Injuries in Non-Fall-Related Trauma.

Background and objective Facial fractures represent a growing concern among an aging population prone to falls. In light of this, this study aimed to investigate differential facial fracture patterns and outcomes based on age effects. Determining the differences between the severity and type of facial fractures in populations of different ages will help guide clinical decision-making when managing patients with facial fractures. Methods This was a single-center study involving trauma registry data, from July 1, 2016, to January 31, 2022. The inclusion criteria were based on the International C

Facial Fractures and Mixed Dentition - What Are the Implications of Dentition Status in Pediatric Facial Fracture Management?

INTRODUCTION: The stage of maturation of the pediatric facial skeleton at the time of injury has a significant impact on both facial fracture patterns and management strategies. For instance, the relative prominence of the pediatric cranium during the early years of life affords protection to the structures of the midface, whereas delayed aeration of the frontal sinuses may predispose younger patients to frontal bone fractures. The dentition status of a pediatric patient may have similar implications in the setting of facial fracture. In this study, the authors examine the effect of dentition

Pelvic Fractures and Associated Urogenital Injuries in Children: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic pelvic injuries are potentially life-threatening and disabling injuries that often result from high-energy impact. It is well established in the orthopaedic literature that adult pelvic fractures can result in urologic injury, especially posterior urethral injury. Pelvic trauma and associated injuries in children are less characterized than in adults and extrapolated from an older population although there are significant anatomic differences between the skeletally mature and immature pelvis. In this context, long-term urogenital sequelae of pelvic fractures, specifical
