Mobile Colistin Resistance (mcr) Gene-Containing Organisms in Poultry Sector in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Epidemiology, Characteristics, and One Health Control Strategies.

Mobile colistin resistance (mcr) genes (mcr-1 to mcr-10) are plasmid-encoded genes that threaten the clinical utility of colistin (COL), one of the highest-priority critically important antibiotics (HP-CIAs) used to treat infections caused by multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant bacteria in humans and animals. For more than six decades, COL has been used largely unregulated in the poultry sector in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and this has led to the development/spread of mcr gene-containing bacteria (MGCB). The prevalence rates of mcr-positive organisms from the pou

Wide distribution of Escherichia coli carrying IncF plasmids containing bla NDM-5 and rmtB resistance genes from hospitalized patients in England.

Introduction. The New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM) variant NDM-5 was first described in 2011 in an isolate of Escherichia coli. We noted that a high proportion of isolates of E. coli positive for bla NDM carbapenemase genes submitted to the UK Health Security Agency (formerly Public Health England) between 2019 and mid-2021 carried the bla NDM-5 allele, with many co-harbouring rmtB, rendering them highly resistant to aminoglycosides as well as to most β-lactams.Hypothesis/Gap Statement. This observation suggested that a common plasmid may be circulating.Aim. To compare these isolates and de

An overview of genes and mutations associated with Chlamydiae species' resistance to antibiotics.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydiae are intracellular bacteria that cause various severe diseases in humans and animals. The common treatment for chlamydia infections are antibiotics. However, when antibiotics are misused (overuse or self-medication), this may lead to resistance of a number of chlamydia species, causing a real public health problem worldwide. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present work, a comprehensive literature search was conducted in the following databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, Science direct and Web of Science. The primary purpose is to analyse a set of data descr

Antimicrobial Non-Susceptibility of Escherichia coli from Outpatients and Patients Visiting Emergency Rooms in Taiwan.

Longitudinal nationwide surveillance data on antimicrobial non-susceptibility and prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) as well as AmpC β-lactamases producers among Escherichia coli from different sources in the community settings are limited. Such data may impact treatment practice. The present study investigated E. coli from outpatients and patients visiting emergency rooms collected by the Taiwan Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance (TSAR) program. A total of 3481 E. coli isolates were studied, including 2153 (61.9%) from urine and 1125 (32.3%) from blood samples. These i

Management of listeriosis.

Determination of the MIC in vitro is often used as the basis for predicting the clinical efficacy of antibiotics. Listeriae are uniformly susceptible in vitro to most common antibiotics except cephalosporins and fosfomycin. However, the clinical outcome is poor. This is partially because listeriae are refractory to the bactericidal mechanisms of many antibiotics, especially to ampicillin-amoxicillin, which still is regarded as the drug of choice. A true synergism can be achieved by adding gentamicin. Another point is that listeriae are able to reside and multiply within host cells, e.g., macro

Factors affecting the effectiveness and safety of colistin in treating drug-resistant gram-negative bacterial infections: a meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: As an important antibiotic for treating infections caused by drug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, colistin's clinical efficacy and safety might be influenced by multiple factors. This meta-analysis aimed to identify the key factors affecting the effectiveness and safety of colistin in treating these infections. The results of this study provide a reference for clinicians to choose treatment methods. At the same time, the rational use of colistin can prevent the occurrence of adverse drug reactions (AKI), improve the cure rate of patients, and delay the development of bacterial resis

Genomic and phenotypic insight into antimicrobial resistance of Pseudomonas fluorescens from King George Island, Antarctica.

The genus Pseudomonas includes metabolically versatile microorganisms occupying diverse niches, from environmental habitats to plant pathogens, and has clinically significant strains. For this reason, Pseudomonas spp. might act as a reservoir of antimicrobial resistance genes, which have been detected even in isolated environments. The aim of this study was to report the antimicrobial susceptibility profile of 25 Pseudomonas fluorescens isolates from soil samples collected on King George Island (Antarctic Peninsula), and to select non-clonal isolates with unusual phenotypes for whole genome se

Drug exposure during breastfeeding: a descriptive population-based cohort study with SIDIAP database.

BACKGROUND: There is a gap in the knowledge of drug exposure during breastfeeding due to exclusion of lactating individuals from studies. It makes difficult to fully understand the implication of drug use while breastfeeding and potential risks to newborns. Breastfeeding information in the Electronic Health Records (EHR) may help us to increase this evidence. We aimed to describe drug exposure during breastfeeding in mothers of a cohort of mother-infant linked pairs in Catalonia, Spain. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive population-based cohort study including mother-infant linked pairs of in

Multidrug-Resistant Proteus mirabilis and Other Gram-Negative Species Isolated from Native Egyptian Chicken Carcasses.

Poultry carcasses may be reservoirs for the zoonotic transmission of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria to humans and pose a major public health hazard. During the isolation of Salmonella from poultry and other foods, many of the presumptive typical Salmonella colonies on xylose lysine deoxycholate (XLD) agar were found to lack the invA gene, which is the specific target gene for Salmonella spp. Therefore, the current study aimed to estimate the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance profiles of extensively drug-resistant invA-negative non-Salmonella isolates recovered from native Egyptian chic

Antimicrobial susceptibility to last-resort antibiotics in carbapenemase-producing bacteria from Ukrainian patients.

UNLABELLED: Since March 2022, an increase was observed in multidrug-resistant microorganisms (MDRO), associated with the hospital transfer of Ukrainian patients. The goal was to collect phenotypic susceptibility data and assess clinical implications. Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE, n = 96), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CPPA, n = 20), and carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii-calcoaceticus (CRAB, n = 6) from Ukrainian patients were obtained from March to December 2022 from the Dutch MDRO surveillance. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed using broth microdilution

A genome-based investigation of the Priestia species isolated from anthrax endemic regions in Kruger National Park.

Priestia is a genus that was renamed from the genus Bacillus based on the conserved signature indels (CSIs) in protein sequences that separate Priestia species from Bacillus, with the latter only including species closely related to B. subtilis and B. cereus. Diagnosis of anthrax, a zoonotic disease, is implicated by tripartite anthrax virulence genes (lef, pagA, and cya) and poly-γ-D-glutamic acid capsular genes cap-ABCDE of Bacillus anthracis. Due to the amplification of anthrax virulence genes in Priestia isolates, the search for homologous anthrax virulence genes within the Priestia genome

Virulence and resistance patterns of Vibrio cholerae non-O1/non-O139 acquired in Germany and other European countries.

Global warming has caused an increase in the emergence of Vibrio species in marine and estuarine environments as well as fresh water bodies. Over the past decades, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has evolved among Vibrio species toward various antibiotics commonly used for the treatment of Vibrio infections. In this study, we assessed virulence and resistance patterns of Vibrio cholerae non-O1/non-O139 strains derived from Germany and other European countries. A total of 63 clinical and 24 environmental Vibrio cholerae non-O1/non-O139 strains, collected between 2011 and 2021, were analyzed. In

Diversity, Virulence, and Antimicrobial Resistance in Isolates From the Newly Emerging Klebsiella pneumoniae ST101 Lineage.

The global dissemination of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC) has been largely attributed to a few high-risk sequence types (STs) (ST258, ST11, ST512) associated with human disease. ST101 is an emerging clone that has been identified in different parts of the world with the potential to become a global, persistent public health threat. Recent research suggests the ST101 lineage is associated with an 11% increase in mortality rate in comparison to non-ST101 infections. In this study, we generated a high-quality, near-finished genome assembly of a multidrug-resi
