Urologic manifestations of postpolio syndrome.

To determine the character and prevalence of bladder dysfunction among persons with a history of polio, we conducted a survey of randomly selected polio survivors. The survey solicited information on the acute episode of polio and the nature of late-onset neurologic symptoms that could be attributed to postpolio syndrome. There were 242 female and 88 male respondents to the study. Symptoms attributable to postpolio syndrome were present in 87.2% of female subjects and 73.9% of male subjects. Respondents with postpolio syndrome had a significantly greater prevalence of urologic symptoms than se

Problem solving and troubleshooting: the indwelling catheter.

Long-term use of an indwelling catheter is seldom free of problems, and the complications associated with indwelling catheters cause significant morbidity and mortality. Often there are alternatives to long-term catheterization; it is assumed in this article that the patient will have been appropriately assessed for other methods of continence control. In this article, leakage around the catheter (bypassing) is discussed. This problem is multifactorial: irritation caused by the catheter balloon, improper sizing of catheter, confusion of the patient, bacteriuria, constipation or fecal impaction

Management of unusual causes of ulcers of lower extremities.

Treatment of any wound begins with the correct diagnosis. The vast majority of chronic wounds can be classified as pressure ulcers, venous ulcers, insensate ulcers, or arterial insufficiency ulcers. This article focuses on wounds of unusual origin that must be considered in evaluation. All of these wounds are difficult to treat, are more likely to occur in specialized clinical settings, may provide clues to underlying systemic illnesses, and can be life-threatening. Unusual wounds discussed include atrophe blanche, calciphylaxis, leukocytoclastic vasculitis, necrobosis lipoidica, necrotizing f

Pressure ulcers in extended care facilities: report of a survey.

A survey including 15 extended care facilities with access to ET nurse consulting services was conducted to assess current wound care protocols, practices, and educational backgrounds as well as requirements. Sixty-seven percent of facilities surveyed used a system to describe pressure ulcers. Wound care was provided by licensed practical nurses in 90% of the institutions and product decisions were made by the physician in 65% of facilities surveyed. Gauze-type dressings were used most frequently on all stages and types of pressure ulcers. A significant correlation between ulcer type and dress

Risk factors for and prevalence of pressure ulcers among hospitalized patients.

A pressure ulcer prevalence study was conducted at a large, university-based hospital in the Midwest to establish a baseline of information for the evaluation of equipment and the interventions used for pressure ulcer prevention. Presence and stage of pressure ulcers, demographic data, attending service, type of mattress surface, and patient classification scores were recorded. The Braden Scale was used to measure the patients' risk for the development of pressure ulcers. Fifty-three of 440 patients studied had 85 ulcers, a prevalence rate of 12% including stage I ulcers. Thirty-eight percent

Mini-Review: Current Bladder Cancer Treatment-The Need for Improvement.

Bladder cancer is the tenth most common cancer and is a significant burden on health care services worldwide, as it is one of the most costly cancers to treat per patient. This expense is due to the extensive treatment and follow-ups that occur with costly and invasive procedures. Improvement in both treatment options and the quality of life these interventions offer has not progressed at the rates of other cancers, and new alternatives are desperately needed to ease the burden. A more modern approach needs to be taken, with urinary biomarkers being a positive step in making treatments more pa

Seasonal clustering of sinopulmonary mucormycosis in patients with hematologic malignancies at a large comprehensive cancer center.

BackgroundInvasive Mucorales infections (IMI) lead to significant morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised hosts. The role of season and climatic conditions in case clustering of IMI remain poorly understood.MethodsFollowing detection of a cluster of sinopulmonary IMIs in patients with hematologic malignancies, we reviewed center-based medical records of all patients with IMIs and other invasive fungal infections (IFIs) between January of 2012 and August of 2015 to assess for case clustering in relation to seasonality.ResultsA cluster of 7 patients were identified with sinopulmonary IMIs (

Health care professionals' understanding of contraindications for physical activity advice in the setting of stem cell transplantation.

PURPOSE: Most patients receiving a hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) are able to tolerate and benefit from physical activity (PA). Therefore, it is important that health care professionals (HCPs) advise patients to perform PA before, during, and after transplantation. By understanding which medical conditions and safety issues are associated with the (non-) promotion of PA, concrete actions and interventions can be planned and implemented. METHODS: Physicians (N = 51), nurses (N = 52), and physical therapists (N = 26) participated in a nationwide cross-sectional online survey. HC

Patient Engagement in Oncology Practice: A Qualitative Study on Patients' and Nurses' Perspectives.

Patient engagement has gained increasing attention in cancer care as it is widely acknowledged as an essential element of high-quality care. There are limited data on how oncology nurses might apply techniques that encourage patient engagement. Therefore, this study aims to understand which nursing strategies can favour patient engagement in oncological care from patients' and nurses' perspectives. We conducted a qualitative study involving oncology patients and oncology nurses. Patients were interviewed, while nurses were involved in focus groups (FGs). Both interviews and FGs were analysed b

Improving Access to Patient Education: an Audit of Extant Educational Materials.

Health information exchange between provider and patient, along with patient participation in their care (self-management), can lead to improved health outcomes. A step towards achieving better outcomes is the systematic provision of education materials to patients and caregivers throughout the cancer trajectory. An audit of patient education (PE) materials was conducted at a cancer center to identify content gaps and determine areas for future development. The PE audit was conducted in all outpatient clinics (13) and clinic-specific PE materials were identified, reviewed, and categorized by c

Obesity Disease and Surgery.

Obesity is a medical disease that is increasing significantly nowadays. Worldwide obesity prevalence doubled since 1980. Obese patients are at great risk for complications with physical and psychological burdens, thus affecting their quality of life. Obesity is well known to have higher risk for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, musculoskeletal diseases and shorter life expectancy. In addition, obesity has a great impact on surgical diseases, and elective surgeries in comparison to general population. There is higher risk for wound infection, longer operative time, poorer outcome, an

Baseline Characteristics of Participants in the Exercise for Cancer to Enhance Living Well (EXCEL) Study: A Canada-Wide Rural-Urban Analysis.

IntroductionExercise interventions improve quality of life and survival for individuals living with and beyond cancer (ILWBC), yet equitable access remains limited. Evidence on characteristics of who enrolls in exercise oncology programs is scarce, leaving gaps for equity-focused recruitment and scale-up, particularly in rural and underserved settings. The EXercise for Cancer to Enhance Living Well (EXCEL) study offers a unique opportunity to examine these issues across a Canada-wide cohort.MethodsEXCEL is an 8-12-week tailored exercise intervention delivered primarily to ILWBC in rural/remote

Multidisciplinary supportive care in systemic light chain amyloidosis.

The immunoglobulin light-chain amyloidosis is a multisystemic disease which manifests by damage to the vital organs by light chain-derived amyloid fibril. Traditionally, the treatment has been directed to the underlying plasma cell clone with or without high dose chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell transplantation using melphalan based conditioning. Now with the approval of highly tolerable anti-CD38 monoclonal antibody daratumumab based anti-plasma cell therapy in 2021, high rates of hematologic complete responses are possible even in patients who are otherwise deemed not a candidat
