The epidemiology of urban pediatric neurological trauma: evaluation of, and implications for, injury prevention programs.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the incidence and causes of pediatric head, spinal cord, and peripheral nerve injuries in an urban setting and to assess the implications of these data for injury prevention programs. METHODS: Pediatric deaths and hospital admissions secondary to neurological trauma included in the Northern Manhattan Injury Surveillance System from 1983 to 1992 were linked to census counts to compute incidence rates. Rates before the implementation of a nonspecific injury prevention program were compared with rates after the implementation, and rates for the target population were compa

Long-Term Outcome of Patients with a Floating Hip Injury of Müller Type A: An Analysis of Prognostic Factors Linked to Functional Outcomes.

Background/Objectives: A floating hip injury, defined as an ipsilateral fracture of the pelvis or acetabulum combined with a femoral fracture, represents a rare and devastating musculoskeletal injury resulting from high-energy trauma. Although Müller type A floating hip injuries comprising an acetabular fracture with an ipsilateral femoral fracture are recognized for their clinical complexity, the long-term prognostic factors influencing functional outcomes remain poorly elucidated. This study aimed to identify independent prognostic factors associated with unsatisfactory long-term functional

[Post-traumatic systemic fat embolism syndrome. Retrospective autopsy study].

INTRODUCTION: The obstruction of blood vessels or heart chambers with fat globules, reached by circulation, is fat embolism [1, 2]. Clinical manifestation of the presence of fat emboli in vital organs is Fat Embolism Syndrome (FES). This syndrome is characterized by neurologic, respiratory and cutaneous signs and different symptoms [5-8], grouped in major and minor signs by Gurd and Wilson. PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to analyze and compare the autopsy findings and clinical data in cases where FES is emphasized as the single or concurrent cause of death after performed autopsy. Pediatric closed head injuries treated in an observation unit.

BACKGROUND: Closed head injury (CHI) is common in childhood and frequently results in hospital admission for observation and treatment. Observation units (OUs) have shown significant benefits for patients and physicians. At our institution, a level 1 pediatric trauma center, patients with CHI are often admitted to an OU for up to 24 hours of observation and treatment. STUDY OBJECTIVES: To describe characteristics of patients with a CHI admitted to a pediatric OU and to identify demographic, historical, clinical, and radiographic factors associated with the need for unplanned inpatient admissi

Injuries as a public health problem in sub-Saharan Africa: epidemiology and prospects for control.

Injuries are common and on increase in most developing countries, including sub-Saharan Africa. A large proportion of the injuries are caused by road traffic accidents, falls, burns, assaults, bites, stings and other animal-related injuries, poisonings, drownings/near-drownings and suicide. Globally, injuries are responsible for about five per cent of the total mortality, and the overall global annual costs were estimated in the late 1980s at around 500 billion US dollars. The burden and pattern of injuries in Africa and other developing areas are poorly known and not well studied. The inciden

Characteristics of traumatic major haemorrhage in a tertiary trauma center.

BACKGROUND: Major traumatic haemorrhage is potentially preventable with rapid haemorrhage control and improved resuscitation techniques. Although advances in prehospital trauma management, haemorrhage is still associated with high mortality. The aim of this study was to use a recent pragmatic transfusion-based definition of major bleeding to characterize patients at risk of major bleeding and associated outcomes in this cohort after trauma. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study including all trauma patients (n = 7020) admitted to a tertiary trauma center from January 2015 to June 202

Morbidity and mortality in elderly trauma patients.

BACKGROUND: Despite an increasing incidence, relatively few studies have examined the factors that predict morbidity and mortality in older patients and several reports have found standard predictors such as the Injury Severity Score to be less useful in this patient population. Similarly, the effect of skeletal injury has not been examined with regard to complications and mortality. The purpose of this study was to review a large multicenter experience with elderly trauma patients to isolate factors that might predict morbidity and mortality. The potential effect of skeletal long-bone injury

Evaluating the Impact of Insurer-Sponsored Health Coaching on Hospitalization and Costs in India: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Health coaching programs are emerging as a promising intervention to improve disease management and reduce healthcare costs, particularly in the context of insurer-sponsored wellness initiatives. While such programs have shown positive outcomes in Western healthcare settings, their effectiveness in India remains underexplored. This study examines the impact of a health coaching program implemented by a prominent Indian health insurer (Aditya Birla Health Insurance), focusing on hospitalization rates and claims paid among high-risk policyholders. To assess the intervention's effectiveness, a re

[Analysis of causes of death in long-term survivors of injuries sustained in traffic accidents].

INTRODUCTION: The manner of death, i.e. if death is moros or violent, is the most important fact for the court and therefore, the most important part of the finding of autopsy reports [1]. To recognize the manner of death in cases with long outliving period after injury could be difficult for forensic pathologists. In such cases, the dissector should be able to point out the direct relationship between initial injury and death by using his (her) own experience and medical knowledge. Could the deaths provoked by low injuries be prevented? These injuries have score of 3 by Abbreviated Injury Sca

[Correlation between survival time and severity of injuries in fatal injuries in traffic accidents].

INTRODUCTION: In forensic pathology, only trauma systems based on disintegration of anatomic structure of organs and tissues, could be used for objectivization, comparison and establishing of severity of injuries. Trauma systems based on pathophysiological values are useless. The Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) and its derivate Injury Severity Score (ISS) are the most common. AIS coded injuries are divided into six body regions and injuries are assigned a six-digit score in relation to their severity. ISS results the sum of the squares of the highest AIS values from the three most severely inju

Effectiveness of road safety interventions: An evidence and gap map.

BACKGROUND: Road Traffic injuries (RTI) are among the top ten leading causes of death in the world resulting in 1.35 million deaths every year, about 93% of which occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Despite several global resolutions to reduce traffic injuries, they have continued to grow in many countries. Many high-income countries have successfully reduced RTI by using a public health approach and implementing evidence-based interventions. As many LMICs develop their highway infrastructure, adopting a similar scientific approach towards road safety is crucial. The evidence al

[Spinal injuries in children and adolescents].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Spinal injuries in children are rare and account for a low proportion of all childhood injuries. Due to anatomical and biomechanical properties of the growing spine, there are great differences between spinal injury in childhood and adulthood. Because of higher mobility and elasticity of the spine and a lower body mass in children, spinal injuries are not frequent and represent only 2 to 5 % of all spinal injuries. In this retrospective study, the effectiveness of conservative and surgical treatment of injured spines in children is evaluated in a 10-year period. MATERIAL

Disability Weights Measurement for 228 Causes of Disease in the Korean Burden of Disease Study 2012.

Disability weight for each disease plays a key role in combining years lived with disability and years of life lost in disability adjusted life year. For the Korean Burden of Disease 2012 study, we have conducted a re-estimation of disability weights for causes of disease by adapting the methodology of a recent Global Burden of Disease study. Our study was conducted through a self-administered web-based survey using a paired comparison (PC) as the main valuation method. A total of 496 physicians and medical college students who were attending in third or fourth grade of a regular course conduc

Chronic Disease and Disability in the United States: Trends, Inequities, and Imperatives for Policy Reform.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points Position Universal, High-Quality Education as a Foundational Public Health Strategy. Long-term health and life expectancy in the United States are shaped more by educational attainment than by any other single factor. Disparities in access to early childhood, K-12, and higher education perpetuate cycles of chronic disease, economic hardship, and shortened lifespan, particularly in marginalized communities. Policymakers must recognize education as a critical public health intervention and commit to providing universal access to high-quality education at every stage of

Brain tumor segmentation and detection in MRI using convolutional neural networks and VGG16.

BackgroundIn this research, we explore the application of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for the development of an automated cancer detection system, particularly for MRI images. By leveraging deep learning and image processing techniques, we aim to build a system that can accurately detect and classify tumors in medical images. The system's performance depends on several stages, including image enhancement, segmentation, data augmentation, feature extraction, and classification. Through these stages, CNNs can be effectively trained to detect tumors in MRI images with high accuracy. This
