Whole-body cold tolerance in older Korean female divers "haenyeo" during cold air exposure: effects of repetitive cold exposure and aging.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of chronic and repetitive diving in cold sea water on physiological responses to cold in older Korean female divers, Haenyeo, who have been exposed to cold water through breath-hold diving since their teens. Young and older females, who have no experience of swimming in cold sea water, were recruited as control groups: older haenyeos (N = 10, 70 ± 3 years of age), young non-diving females (N = 10, 23 ± 2 years), and older non-diving females (N = 6, 73 ± 4 years). For the test of cold exposure, all subjects were exposed to cold in an air tempe

Adaptation of Fusarium oxysporum and Fusarium dimerum to the specific aquatic environment provided by the water systems of hospitals.

Members of the Fusarium group were recently detected in water distribution systems of several hospitals in the world. An epidemiological investigation was conducted over 2 years in hospital buildings in Dijon and Nancy (France) and in non-hospital buildings in Dijon. The fungi were detected only within the water distribution systems of the hospital buildings and also, but at very low concentrations, in the urban water network of Nancy. All fungi were identified as Fusarium oxysporum species complex (FOSC) and Fusarium dimerum species complex (FDSC) by sequencing part of the translation elongat

Does 2-phosphoglycolate serve as an internal signal molecule of inorganic carbon deprivation in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803?

Cyanobacteria possess CO2 -concentrating mechanisms (CCM) that functionally compensate for the poor affinity of their ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) to CO2 . It was proposed that 2-phosphoglycolate (2PG), produced by the oxygenase activity of Rubisco and metabolized via photorespiratory routes, serves as a signal molecule for the induction of CCM-related genes under limiting CO2 level (LC) conditions. However, in vivo evidence is still missing. Since 2PG does not permeate the cells, we manipulated its internal concentration. Four putative phosphoglycolate phosphatase

Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular responses to acute isocapnic and poikilocapnic hypoxia in humans.

We examined the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular responses to acute isocapnic (IH) and poikilocapnic hypoxia (PH) in 10 men (25.7 +/- 4.2 yr, mean +/- SD). Heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and mean peak middle cerebral artery blood flow velocity (Vp) were measured continuously during two randomized protocols of 20 min of step IH and PH (45 Torr). HR was elevated during both IH (P < 0.01) and PH (P < 0.01), with no differences observed between conditions. MAP was modestly elevated across all time points during IH but only became elevated after 5 min during PH. During IH, Vp was

Detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia induced by cold stimulation of the urinary bladder of rats.

Instillation of cold water into the urinary bladder has been used as a diagnostic test to evaluate neurogenic dysfunctions of the lower urinary tract (LUT). This study examined the effects of cold stimulation on the LUT of urethan-anesthetized rats. Urinary bladder pressure and external urethral sphincter (EUS) electromyogram (EMG) were recorded during cystometrograms in which body- or room-temperature saline was infused continuously into the bladder and voided through the urethra. Subsequent infusion of cold saline (6-8 degrees C) into the bladder increased by approximately 100% the duration

Burden of treatment associated with hearing aid use among older adults with hearing loss: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Treatment burden can affect patients' ability to carry out tasks or follow healthcare providers' recommendations. Evaluating the burden of using and maintaining hearing aids can help identify factors that affect patient compliance. This study also examined the support that older adults receive and prefer to overcome this burden. This enables healthcare providers to better understand the burden and promote improved adherence to hearing aid use among older adults. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with older adults recruited from the Audiolog

Activation-independent capture of free fatty acids at the bacterial cell envelope by BrtB.

UNLABELLED: Fatty acids (FAs) are key metabolites in living organisms, shaping membrane architecture, and helping cellular acclimatization to changing conditions. Bacteria synthesize FAs de novo but can also reclaim them from membrane lipids or uptake them from the environment, usually converting free fatty acids (FFAs) into activated FAs that can then be further metabolized. In cyanobacteria, it is the acyl-acyl carrier protein synthetase (Aas) that activates exogenous FFAs. However, the cyanobacterial enzyme BrtB was recently shown to esterify, in vitro, FFAs directly onto abundant chlorinat

Polygraphy of sleep at altitudes between 5300 m and 7500 m during an expedition to Mt. Everest (MedEx 2006).

OBJECTIVES: Sleep at extreme altitudes is characterized by the repetitive occurrence of central apneas that in some cases may lead to a marked decrease in arterial oxygen saturation. During the Ludwig Maximilians University Expedition to Mt. Everest (MedEx 2006), nocturnal polygraphic recordings were made at different altitudes and included the first recordings ever made at 7500 m, which were completed on 8 separate occasions during the expedition. METHODS: The study was performed on the author (K.M., 58 years, 181 cm, 75 kg), who is an experienced high-altitude mountaineer. The standard poly

Alginate Oligosaccharides Enhance Gut Microbiota and Intestinal Barrier Function, Alleviating Host Damage Induced by Deoxynivalenol in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Alginate oligosaccharides (AOS) exhibits notable effects in terms of anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. Deoxynivalenol (DON) has the potential to trigger intestinal inflammation by upregulating pro-inflammatory cytokines and apoptosis, thereby compromising the integrity of the intestinal barrier function and perturbing the balance of the gut microbiota. OBJECTIVES: We assessed the impact of AOS on mitigating DON-induced intestinal damage and systemic inflammation in mice. METHODS: After a 1-wk acclimatization period, the mice were divided into 4 groups.

How using light touch immersion research revealed important insights into the lack of progress in malaria elimination in Eastern Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: By 2022, the Government of Indonesia had successfully eliminated malaria in 389 out of 514 districts but continues to face a challenge in Eastern Indonesia where 95% of the total 2021 malaria cases were reported from Papua, West Papua and Nusa Tenggara Timur provinces. There is an increased recognition that malaria elimination will require a better understanding of the human behavioural factors hindering malaria prevention and treatment, informed by local context and local practice. METHODS: This research used a light-touch immersion research approach. Field researchers lived in c

Severity of central sleep apnea does not affect sleeping oxygen saturation during ascent to high altitude.

Central sleep apnea (CSA) is characterized by periodic breathing (PB) during sleep, defined as intermittent periods of apnea/hypopnea and hyperventilation, with associated acute fluctuations in oxyhemoglobin saturation (SO2). CSA has an incidence of ∼50% in heart failure patients but is universal at high altitude (HA; ≥2,500 m), increasing in severity with further ascent and/or time at altitude. However, whether PB is adaptive, maladaptive, or neutral with respect to sleeping SO2 at altitude is unclear. We hypothesized that PB severity would improve mean sleeping SO2 during acclimatization to
