Imaging Biomarkers in Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus: Associations With Symptoms and 1-Year Treatment Outcomes.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a neurological disorder that primarily affects older adults and is typically characterized clinically by a triad of symptoms: gait disturbance, urinary urgency or incontinence, and cognitive decline. The relationship between clinical presentation and iNPH imaging biomarkers remains unclear, as does the ability of these markers to predict outcomes following cerebrospinal fluid diversion. Additionally, the association between fecal incontinence (FI) and iNPH, as well as the relationship between FI and iNPH imaging biomark

Morphometric brain MRI findings in hair-pulling and skin-picking disorders in youth.

Pediatric hair-pulling disorder (HPD) and skin-picking disorder (SPD) are treatment-resistant conditions understudied with neuroimaging. We report cross-sectional morphometric MRI results from the adolescent-early adult subsample of the Body-Focused Precision Medicine Initiative (BPMI), a major HPD-SPD MRI database. Participants aged 11-21 years comprised 30 with HPD, 13 with SPD, 16 with both HPD and SPD, and 29 typically developing (TD). Whole-brain MRI was parcellated into cortical and subcortical regions with FreeSurfer. Volume and (for cortex) thickness and surface area of each region wer

Deformation of brain in normal pressure hydrocephalus is more readily associated with slow vasomotion rather than heartbeat related pulsations of intracranial pressure.

OBJECTIVE: Enlarged brain ventricles, compressed parasagittal cerebrospinal fluid spaces, steep callosal angle, dilated sylvian fissures and focal cortical sulcal dilatation are typical imaging features of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH). The pathophysiological mechanisms behind these morphological changes are poorly understood, but the hydrodynamic concepts of communicating hydrocephalus suggest that increased heartbeat related intracranial pulsations are involved in ventricular enlargement. In this cross-sectional study we analysed the association between the radiological fin

Atypical brain structural connectivity and social cognition in childhood maltreatment and peer victimisation.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment (CM) is associated with neurobiological aberrations and atypical social cognition. Few studies have examined the neural effects of another common early-life interpersonal stressor, namely peer victimisation (PV). This study examines the associations between tract aberrations and childhood interpersonal stress from caregivers (CM) and peers (PV), and explores how the observed tract alterations are in turn related to affective theory of mind (ToM). METHODS: Data from 107 age-and gender-matched youths (34 CM [age = 19.9 ± 1.68; 36%male], 35 PV [age = 19.9 ± 1.6

Corpus Callosum Length and Cerebellar Vermian Height in Fetal Growth Restriction.

INTRODUCTION: Growth-restricted fetuses may have changes in their neuroanatomical structures that can be detected in prenatal imaging. We aim to compare corpus callosal length (CCL) and cerebellar vermian height (CVH) measurements between fetal growth restriction (FGR) and control fetuses and to correlate them with cerebral Doppler velocimetry in growth-restricted fetuses. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort of FGR after 20 weeks of gestation with ultrasound measurements of CCL and CVH. Control cohort was assembled from fetuses without FGR who had growth ultrasound after 20 weeks of gestat

Secreted Effector Proteins of Poplar Leaf Spot and Stem Canker Pathogen Sphaerulina musiva Manipulate Plant Immunity and Contribute to Virulence in Diverse Ways.

Fungal effectors play critical roles in manipulating plant immune responses and promoting colonization. Sphaerulina musiva is a heterothallic ascomycete fungus that causes Septoria leaf spot and stem canker disease in poplar (Populus spp.) plantations. This disease can result in premature defoliation, branch and stem breakage, increased mortality, and plantation failure. However, little is known about the interaction between S. musiva and poplar. Previous work predicted 142 candidate secreted effector proteins in S. musiva (SmCSEPs), 19 of which were selected for further functional characteriz

Individual Differences in Hemispheric Emotional Valence by Computerized Test Correlate with Lateralized Differences in Nucleus Accumbens, Hippocampal and Amygdala Volumes.

PURPOSE: Conventional theories of hemispheric emotional valence (HEV) postulate fixed hemispheric differences in emotional processing. Schiffer's dual brain psychology proposes that there are prominent individual differences with a substantial subset showing a reversed laterality pattern. He further proposed that hemispheric differences were more akin to differences in personality than in emotional processing. This theory is supported by findings that unilateral treatments, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation, are effective if they accurately target individual differences in laterality.

Prediction of 6 months endoscopic third ventriculostomy success rate in patients with hydrocephalus using a multi-layer perceptron network.

OBJECTIVE: Discrimination between patients most likely to benefit from endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) and those at higher risk of failure is challenging. Compared to other standard models, we have tried to develop a prognostic multi-layer perceptron model based on potentially high-impact new variables for predicting the ETV success score (ETVSS). METHODS: Clinical and radiological data of 128 patients have been collected, and ETV outcomes were evaluated. The success of ETV was defined as remission of symptoms and not requiring VPS for six months after surgery. Several clinical and rad

Two cases of DYNC1H1 mutations with intractable epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: The DYNC1H1 gene encodes the heavy chain of cytoplasmic dynein 1, a core structure of the cytoplasmic dynein complex. Dominant DYNC1H1 mutations are implicated in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, axonal, type 20, spinal muscular atrophy, lower extremity-predominant 1, and autosomal dominant mental retardation 13 with neuronal migration defects. We report two patients with DYNC1H1 mutations who had intractable epilepsy and intellectual disability (ID), one with and one without pachygyria. CASE REPORTS: Patient 1 had severe ID. At the age of 2 months, she presented myoclonic seizures an

Acute and Chronic Effects of Multiple Concussions on Midline Brain Structures.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that a history of concussion (HOC) causes greater disturbances in cerebral blood flow (CBF) and white matter microstructure of midline brain structures after subsequent concussions, during the acute and chronic phases of recovery. METHODS: In this longitudinal MRI study, 61 athletes with uncomplicated concussion (36 with HOC) were imaged at the acute phase of injury (1-7 days after injury), the subacute phase (8-14 days), medical clearance to return to play (RTP), 1 month after RTP, and 1 year after RTP. Semi-automated assessment of the principal diffusion direction in the corpus callosum: differentiation of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus from neurodegenerative diseases.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) shares clinical and radiological features with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Corpus callosum (CC) involvement in these disorders is well established on structural MRI and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), but alterations overlap and lack specificity to underlying tissue changes. OBJECTIVE: We propose a semi-automated approach to assess CC integrity in iNPH based on the spatial distribution of DTI-derived principal diffusion direction orientation (V1). METHODS: We processed DTI data from 121 subject

Older age, male sex, and cerebral microbleeds predict white matter loss after traumatic brain injury.

Little is known on how mild traumatic brain injury affects white matter based on age at injury, sex, cerebral microbleeds, and time since injury. Here, we study the fractional anisotropy of white matter to study these effects in 109 participants aged 18-77 (46 females, age μ ± σ = 40 ± 17 years) imaged within [Formula: see text] 1 week and [Formula: see text] 6 months post-injury. Age is found to be linearly associated with white matter degradation, likely due not only to injury but also to cumulative effects of other pathologies and to their interactions with injury. Age is associated with me

What brain abnormalities can magnetic resonance imaging detect in foetal and early neonatal spina bifida: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Open spina bifida (OSB) encompasses a wide spectrum of intracranial abnormalities. With foetal surgery as a new treatment option, robust intracranial imaging is important for comprehensive preoperative evaluation and prognostication. We aimed to determine the incidence of infratentorial and supratentorial findings detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) alone and MRI compared to ultrasound. METHODS: Two systematic reviews comparing MRI to ultrasound and MRI alone were conducted on MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases identifying studies of foetal OSB from 2000 to 2020. Intrac

Validamycin A Induces Broad-Spectrum Resistance Involving Salicylic Acid and Jasmonic Acid/Ethylene Signaling Pathways.

Validamycin A (VMA) is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to control rice sheath blight. Although it has been reported that VMA can induce the plant defense responses, the mechanism remains poorly understood. Here, we found that reactive oxygen species (ROS) bursts and callose deposition in Arabidopsis thaliana, rice (Oryza sativa L.), and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were induced by VMA and were most intense with 10 μg of VMA per milliliter at 24 h. Moreover, we showed that VMA induced resistance against Pseudomonas syringae, Botrytis cinerea, and Fusarium graminearum in Arabidopsis leaves, in

Biallelic MFSD2A variants associated with congenital microcephaly, developmental delay, and recognizable neuroimaging features.

Major Facilitator Superfamily Domain containing 2a (MFSD2A) is an essential endothelial lipid transporter at the blood-brain barrier. Biallelic variants affecting function in MFSD2A cause autosomal recessive primary microcephaly 15 (MCPH15, OMIM# 616486). We sought to expand our knowledge of the phenotypic spectrum of MCPH15 and demonstrate the underlying mechanism of inactivation of the MFSD2A transporter. We carried out detailed analysis of the clinical and neuroradiological features of a series of 27 MCPH15 cases, including eight new individuals from seven unrelated families. Genetic invest

Decreased interhemispheric functional connectivity rather than corpus callosum volume as a potential biomarker for autism spectrum disorder.

Previous studies have implicated both structural and interhemispheric functional connectivity alterations in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) although findings are inconsistent. There is evidence that connectivity between corresponding regions in each hemisphere (homotopic) may be of particular importance and therefore the present study used the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange data to investigate ASD-related resting-state and structural alterations as well as associations with symptom severity (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule - ADOS). We employed a voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity

Biocontrol of Rhizoctonia solani via Induction of the Defense Mechanism and Antimicrobial Compounds Produced by Bacillus subtilis SL-44 on Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.).

Pepper seedling wilt disease is the main cause of crop yield reduction. Biocontrol agents are widely used to control plant diseases caused by pathogenic fungi and activate plant defense systems. Our preliminary work showed that Bacillus subtilis SL-44 played a significant role in the reduction of wilt disease severity on pepper plants. To evaluate biological control mechanism of B. subtilis SL-44 on wilt disease caused by Rhizoctonia solani, the activities of the related enzymes were detected in the pepper seedling with different treatment in this study. Fluorescence microscopy combined with d
