261 children with 281 cholesteatoma operations performed between 1970 and 1982 in the ENT-Clinic of the University of Tübingen were followed-up. In 77 ears an open technique (attico-antrotomy with removal of the posterior canal wall) was employed. In 103 ears a combined approach with posterior tympanotomy and preservation of the posterior canal wall was performed. In 47 ears an atticotomy with reconstruction of the lateral attix wall defect with tragal cartilage and perichondrium was done. The cholesteatoma was limited to the middle ear in 54 patients; treatment consisted of a transcanal tympa

PURPOSE: Bone-cement (BC) ossiculoplasty is one of the options to solve ossicular chain problems. Many authors reported successful results in the early or mid-follow-up period; however, there is no long-term result in the literature. We aim to evaluate long term results of BC ossiculoplasty.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight patients who underwent BC ossiculoplasty as incudostapedial re-bridging by the same surgeon were invited to evaluation. Postoperative otomicroscopic examination was performed. Pre-operative and post-operative audiological results after longer follow up and graft success

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the functional and anatomical outcomes of ossiculoplasty using an autograft incus or a titanium partial ossicular replacement prosthesis for reconstructing Austin type A ossicular defects.
METHODS: Patients with Austin A ossicular defects were randomly divided into two groups: one group underwent ossiculoplasty with an autologous incus (the autologous incus group) and the other underwent ossiculoplasty with a titanium partial ossicular replacement prosthesis (the titanium prosthesis group). Otoscopic examination and audiological assessment was done pre-o

OBJECTIVE: To investigate and analyze the relationship between individual ossicular erosion and air-bone gap (ABG) among patients with cholesteatoma.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Data from all patients undergoing an initial surgery for cholesteatoma were retrospectively reviewed to evaluate the relationships between preoperative pure tone audiometry data, intraoperative assessment of individual ossicular destruction, and clinical characterization of cholesteatoma. For each patient, the cholesteatoma was categorized as prim

OBJECTIVE: Surgical approaches to the jugular foramen, most often used for the resection of glomus jugulare tumors, may include removal of the external auditory canal wall and overclosure of the meatus, resulting in maximal conductive hearing loss. Modifications have been described that maintain hearing by preserving the canal wall at the price of decreased exposure and are, therefore, suitable only for small and favorably located tumors. Our technique for removal and then reconstruction of the canal wall with hydroxyapatite cement allows for complete anterior translocation of the facial nerve

Temporal bone imaging in children shows radioanatomical aspects and diseases distinct from the imaging and pathology results found in adults. Imaging modalities such as CT and MR bring out these differences. The aim of this study is to present the CT and MR particularities of the temporal bone during postnatal growth. The mastoid air cells form mostly in the postnatal period and the course of pneumatization is directly correlated with middle ear successive inflammatory episodes. The most frequent etiologies of hearing loss in children are reviewed, emphasizing their specificities in clinical p

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to analyze the anatomical and audiologic results in more than 1,000 cartilage tympanoplasties that utilized a logical application of several techniques for the management of the difficult ear (cholesteatoma, recurrent perforation, atelectasis). Our hypothesis was that pathology and status of the ossicular chain should dictate the technique used to achieve optimal outcome.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective clinical study of patients undergoing cartilage tympanoplasty between July 1994 and July 2001. A computerized otologic database and patient cha

OBJECTIVE: The CHARGE syndrome is associated with ear anomalies and deafness in addition to other malformations. Deformations of the ossicles or aplasia of the semicircular canals, cochlear hypoplasia, hypoplasia or aplasia of the VIIIth cranial nerve and abnormal routing of the VIIth cranial nerve, sigmoid sinus, and emissaries are typical findings. The aim of this study is to explore the feasibility and procedure of cochlear implantation in patients with CHARGE syndrome and to assess the outcome.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review.

Structure and function of central synapses are profoundly influenced by experience during developmental sensitive periods. Sensory synapses, which are the indispensable interface for the developing brain to interact with its environment, are particularly plastic. In the auditory system, moderate forms of unilateral hearing loss during development are prevalent but the pre- and postsynaptic modifications that occur when hearing symmetry is perturbed are not well understood. We investigated this issue by performing experiments at the large calyx of Held synapse. Principal neurons of the medial n

The Authors executed checking a result of stapes mobilization under anesthesia in children, sick otosclerosis. The Study ABR was conducted before operations, after opening the drum cavity, making the hole in plate of stapes, installing the prosthetic device and at the end of operation. The reduction level of latency V wave and interval III-V and I-V waves are a reliable acknowledgement of the improvement of the hearing at the end of operation.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the likelihood ratios (LRs) and predictive values of preoperative air-bone gap (ABG) levels on the presence of gross ossicular discontinuity (OD) among chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) patients.
SETTING: Tertiary hospitals.
METHODS: Records of 276 patients with CSOM 7 to 75 years old undergoing their first tympanomastoidectomy were reviewed. Association of preoperative audiogram on the presence of OD was analyzed using logistic regression analysis and chi 2 tests. Frequency-specific ABG values were compared with the presence of OD.
RESULTS: In CSOM without chole

We carried out a functional evaluation of the malleus-incus and incus-stapes joints in 37 patients with rheumatoid arthritis using multifrequency tympanometry. As a reference point, we calculated the resonance point using two different methods, and the results obtained were classified into two groups according to the phase of the disease: active, with clinical affection of the joint and with no medication; and inactive, asymptomatic. The results were compared with previously published criteria indicating normality, which underlined a significant correlation in the analysis of the resonance poi

OBJECTIVES:: The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility and safety of ossiculoplasty under local anesthesia in an office setting without sedation.
METHODS:: Between May 2017 and November 2017, patients who presented with conductive hearing loss and known isolated ossicular discontinuities were offered ossiculoplasty under local anesthesia. Inclusion criteria included age ⩾ 18 years, adequate transcanal access, and the ability to lie supine for up to 45 minutes. Exclusion criteria included associated tympanic membrane perforation and the presence of middleear or mastoid cholesteatoma

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to elucidate clinical effectiveness of submillimeter multislice 2- and 3-dimensional computed tomography (CT) for diagnosis of congenital middle ear anomaly.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Preoperative CT and operative findings were retrospectively analyzed in 36 ears of 33 patients. The distance between the malleal handle (MH) and the incus long process (ILP) was measured in 28 normal ears.
RESULTS: Mean ± SD MH-ILP distance in normal ears was 1.8 ± 0.3 mm. In patients with middle ear anomaly, overall specificity, accuracy, and positive and negative predictive values we
