Storage and periodic expulsion of urine is regulated by a neural control system in the brain and spinal cord that coordinates the reciprocal activity of two functional units in the lower urinary tract (LUT): (a) a reservoir (the urinary bladder) and (b) an outlet (bladder neck, urethra and striated muscles of the urethral sphincter). Control of the bladder and urethral outlet is dependent on three sets of peripheral nerves: parasympathetic, sympathetic and somatic nerves that contain afferent as well as efferent pathways. Afferent neurons innervating the bladder have A-delta or C-fibre axons.

BACKGROUND: Recent interest in the function of the nuclear lamina has been provoked by the discovery of lamin A/C mutations in the laminopathy diseases. However, it is not understood why mutations in lamin A give such a range of tissue-specific phenotypes. Part of the problem in rationalising genotype-phenotype correlations in the laminopathies is our lack of understanding of the function of normal and mutant lamin A. STUDY OBJECTIVES: Narcolepsy is strongly associated with the presence of HLA DQB1*0602. This and other evidence suggests that human narcolepsy is an autoimmune disease. This is in distinction to that found in canine models where hypocretin receptor 2 mutations are etiologic. We decided to test for the presence of several neuron-specific and organ-specific autoantibodies to see if they were present in HLA DQB1*0602-associated or cataplexy-associated narcolepsy or could serve as a serologic marker of the illness.
