Short-term, circuit-based heat acclimation enhances intermittent work capacity, reaction time, and neuromuscular function under heat stress in active males.

Exertional heat stress impairs cardiovascular, thermoregulatory, cognitive, and neuromuscular function, compromising health and performance. Although effective, traditional active heat acclimation (HA) relies on prolonged, low- to moderate-intensity exercise heat exposures and may therefore lack context-specificity. We investigated whether short-duration, high-intensity, circuit-based HA elicits favorable performance and thermophysiological adaptations. Eighteen participants completed either five circuit training sessions in hot (HEAT: 35°C; n = 9) or thermoneutral conditions (CON: 20°C; n = 9

Single Session Intermittent Heat Exposure With More Frequent and Shorter Cooling Breaks Facilitates Greater Training Intensity and Elicits Physiological Responses Comparable to Continuous Heat Exposure.

PURPOSE: To investigate the influence of shorter, more frequent rest breaks with per-cooling as an alternative heat-acclimation session on physiological, perceptual, and self-paced maximal cycling performance, compared with continuous heat exposure. METHODS: Thirteen participants completed 1 continuous and 3 intermittent-heat-exposure (IHE) maximal self-paced cycling protocols in a random order in heat (36 °C, 80% relative humidity): 1 × 60-minute exercise (CON), 3 × 20-minute exercise with 7.5-minute rest between sets (IHE-20), 4 × 15-minute exercise with 5-minute rest between sets (IHE-15),

Isolation Driven Divergence in Osmoregulation in Galaxias maculatus (Jenyns, 1848) (Actinopterygii: Osmeriformes).

BACKGROUND: Marine species have colonized extreme environments during evolution such as freshwater habitats. The amphidromous teleost fish, Galaxias maculatus is found mainly migrating between estuaries and rivers, but some landlocked populations have been described in lakes formed during the last deglaciation process in the Andes. In the present study we use mtDNA sequences to reconstruct the historical scenario of colonization of such a lake and evaluated the osmoregulatory shift associated to changes in habitat and life cycle between amphidromous and landlocked populations. RESULTS: Standa

Changes in plasma melatonin levels and pineal organ melatonin synthesis following acclimation of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to different water salinities.

Melatonin has been suggested to play a role in fish osmoregulation, and in salmonids has been related to the timing of adaptive mechanisms during smolting. It has been described that acclimation to different environmental salinities alters levels of circulating melatonin in a number of fish species, including rainbow trout. However, nothing is known regarding salinity effects on melatonin synthesis in the pineal organ, which is the main source of rhythmically produced and secreted melatonin in blood. In the present study we have evaluated, in rainbow trout, the effects of acclimation to differ

Thermal acclimation and regulation of metabolism in a reptile (Crocodylus porosus): the importance of transcriptional mechanisms and membrane composition.

Energy metabolism is fundamental for animal fitness because it fuels locomotion, growth, and reproduction. Mitochondrial capacities often acclimate to compensate for negative thermodynamic effects. Our aim was to determine the importance of transcriptional regulation and membrane fatty acid composition in modulating oxidative capacities at body temperatures selected in a cold and a warm environment by a reptile (Crocodylus porosus). In the cool environment (mean selected T(b) = 21 degrees C), mRNA concentrations of the transcription factor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR

Adaptive activation of thyroid hormone and energy expenditure.

The mechanisms by which thyroid hormone accelerates energy expenditure are poorly understood. In the brown adipose tissue (BAT), activation of thyroid hormone by type 2 iodothyronine deiodinase (D2) has been known to play a role in adaptive energy expenditure during cold exposure in human newborns and other small mammals. Although BAT is not present in significant amounts in normal adult humans, recent studies have found substantial amounts of D2 in skeletal muscle, a metabolically relevant tissue in humans. This article reviews current biological knowledge about D2 and adaptive T3 production

Changes in respiratory control after 5 days at altitude.

These experiments examined changes in the chemoreflex control of breathing and acid-base balance after 5 days at altitude (3480 m) in six healthy males. The partial pressures of carbon dioxide (P(CO2)) at which ventilation increased during isoxic hypoxic and hyperoxic modified rebreathing tests at sea level fell significantly at altitude by mean+/-S.E.M. of 12.8+/-2.51 mmHg and 9.5+/-1.77 mmHg, respectively, but response slopes above threshold were unchanged. Altitude exposure produced a respiratory alkalosis evidenced by a decrease in mean resting end-tidal P(CO2) from 41+/-0.84 mmHg at sea l

Ectopic expression of ABI3 gene enhances freezing tolerance in response to abscisic acid and low temperature in Arabidopsis thaliana.

The plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) regulates several physiological and developmental processes in plants, including stress adaptation and seed maturation. ABA-mediated processes appear to be central in plant cold acclimation and expression of cold acclimation-related genes. Ectopic expression of ABI3 encoding a seed-specific transcriptional activator confers on Arabidopsis vegetative tissues the ability to accumulate seed-specific transcripts in response to ABA, and also influences some ABA-mediated vegetative responses. In the present study we characterized the effect of ectopic expression

Acute heat stroke. Epidemiologic, biochemical, renal, and coagulation studies.

Fifteen Marine recruits with acute heat stroke were examined for (1) predisposing factors, (2) blood coagulation disturbances, (3) renal function abnormalities, and (4) blood composition alterations. Epidemiologic data identified the following risk factors; previous residence in a temperate climate, first phase of training, fatigue, and strenuous exercise in hot, humid conditions. Results of blood coagulation studies disclosed an increase in prothrombin and partial thromboplastin times, with a decrease in platelet count, probably indicating a transient, low-grade consumptive process. Heat acclimation improves the neural control of body temperature during heat stress in older adults.

The mechanisms underlying impaired temperature regulation in older age, and the ability of older adults to physiologically adapt to heat exposure remain understudied. This study determined the effects of older age on the neural control of body temperature during heat stress and its plasticity in response to passive heat acclimation. The neural control of body temperature during heat stress was quantified with measurements of skin sympathetic nerve activity (SSNA), local sweat rate (LSR) and cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) performed on older (n = 15, 60-78 years) and younger (n = 16, 21-40

Increasing cerebral blood flow reduces the severity of central sleep apnea at high altitude.

Earlier studies have indicated an important role for cerebral blood flow in the pathophysiology of central sleep apnea (CSA) at high altitude, but were not decisive. To test the hypothesis that pharmacologically altering cerebral blood flow (CBF) without altering arterial blood gas (ABGs) values would alter the severity of CSA at high altitude, we studied 11 healthy volunteers (8M, 3F; 31 ± 7 yr) in a randomized placebo-controlled single-blind study at 5,050 m in Nepal. CBF was increased by intravenous (iv) acetazolamide (Az; 10 mg/kg) plus intravenous dobutamine (Dob) infusion (2-5 μg·kg-1·mi

The effects of a heat acclimation protocol in persons with spinal cord injury.

Persons without spinal cord injury (SCI) physiologically acclimate between seven to fourteen consecutive days of exercise in the heat. Decreased resting and exercise core temperature, decreased heart rate, increased plasma volume and increased thermal comfort during exercise are changes consistent with heat acclimation. Autonomic dysfunction after SCI impairs heat dissipation through sweating and vasodilation. The purpose of this study is to determine if seven consecutive days of exercise in the heat would result in physiologic changes consistent with heat acclimation in persons with SCI. Ten

Progressive and biphasic cardiac responses during extreme mountain ultramarathon.

Investigations on the cardiac function consequences of mountain ultramarathon (MUM) >100 h are lacking. The present study assessed the progressive cardiac responses during the world's most challenging MUM (Tor des Géants; Italy; 330 km; 24,000 m of cumulative elevation gain). Resting echocardiographic evaluation of morphology, function, and mechanics of left and right ventricle (LV and RV) including speckle tracking echocardiography was conducted in 15 male participants (46 ± 13 yr) before (pre), during (mid; 148 km), and after (post) the race. Environmental and cortisol-mediated control of Ca(2+) uptake in tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus).

Ca(2+) is a vital element for many physiological processes in vertebrates, including teleosts, which live in aquatic environments and acquire Ca(2+) from their surroundings. Ionocytes within the adult gills or larval skin are critical sites for transcellular Ca(2+) uptake in teleosts. The ionocytes of zebrafish were found to contain transcellular Ca(2+) transporters, epithelial Ca(2+) channel (ECaC), plasma membrane Ca(2+)-ATPase 2 (PMCA2), and Na(+)/Ca(2+) exchanger 1b (NCX1b), providing information about the molecular mechanism of transcellular Ca(2+) transports mediated by ionocytes in fish

Discrete thalamic lesions attenuate winter adaptations and increase body weight.

The midline thalamus (e.g., the paraventricular thalamic nuclei and the reuniens nucleus) of Siberian hamsters and other mammals has been reported to contain specific binding sites for melatonin, a hormone that is essential for photoperiodically induced winter adaptations such as reproductive quiescence, loss of body weight, daily torpor, and the winter molt. The first experiment investigated whether the midline thalamus is necessary for these winter adaptations. Adult Siberian hamsters received discrete neurotoxic lesions of the paraventricular thalamic nuclei or the reuniens nucleus while un

Physiological characterization of lateral line function in the Antarctic fish Trematomus bernacchii.

The Antarctic notothenioids are a monophyletic radiation of fishes that have evolved under conditions of low light and cold, where non-visual sensory systems, such as the mechanosensory lateral line system, would be of importance. As part of a study of the structure and function of the mechanosensory lateral line system in these fishes we systematically characterized the function of the anterior lateral line system in one of the common benthic species, Trematomus bernacchii. Frequency-response and threshold-tuning curve methods yield similar functional characterizations of single afferent fibr
