Palaeoecological data indicates land-use changes across Europe linked to spatial heterogeneity in mortality during the Black Death pandemic.

The Black Death (1347-1352 CE) is the most renowned pandemic in human history, believed by many to have killed half of Europe's population. However, despite advances in ancient DNA research that conclusively identified the pandemic's causative agent (bacterium Yersinia pestis), our knowledge of the Black Death remains limited, based primarily on qualitative remarks in medieval written sources available for some areas of Western Europe. Here, we remedy this situation by applying a pioneering new approach, 'big data palaeoecology', which, starting from palynological data, evaluates the scale of

The overshadowed scientific endeavours of Berengario Da Carpi, a renaissance physician and the Forerunner of neurosurgery: a historical vignette.

Jacopo Berengario da Carpi was Renaissance-era physician, surgeon, and anatomy lecturer who transformed medieval anatomy and surgery-which were, at the time, dominated mostly by religious dogma-into a modern science based on direct observation, experience, and cadaveric dissection. He was an accomplished and innovative neuroanatomist and educator, a prolific researcher and publisher, and a successful practicing surgeon who treated the head injuries of many renowned patients of that period. He published a landmark commentary on skull fractures that was the first printed book in history devoted

Yersinia pestis--etiologic agent of plague.

Plague is a widespread zoonotic disease that is caused by Yersinia pestis and has had devastating effects on the human population throughout history. Disappearance of the disease is unlikely due to the wide range of mammalian hosts and their attendant fleas. The flea/rodent life cycle of Y. pestis, a gram-negative obligate pathogen, exposes it to very different environmental conditions and has resulted in some novel traits facilitating transmission and infection. Studies characterizing virulence determinants of Y. pestis have identified novel mechanisms for overcoming host defenses. Regulatory

Biomechanical analysis of a femur fracture in osteoarchaeology: Reconstruction of pathomechanics, treatment and gait.

In paleopathology, biomechanics allows us to investigate traumas in ancient skeletal remains. The aim of our current research is to reconstruct pathomechanics, treatment and gait of an individual from a Late Medieval femur with evident bone callus. In particular, to reconstruct the dynamic of the trauma that caused the injury and the adopted therapeutic measures, taking into account medical knowledges of that time. The femur was recovered during the archaeological investigation in the Sanctuary of Sacro Monte, Varese (Northern Italy). Classical physical anthropological methods and CT scans wer

Photodynamic activity and photoantimicrobial chemotherapy studies of ferrocene-substituted 2-thiobarbituric acid.

A ferrocene-substituted thiobarbituric acid (FT) has been synthesized to explore its photophysical properties and photodynamic and photoantimicrobial chemotherapy activities. FT has an intense metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) band at ca. 575 nm. The ferrocene moiety of FT undergoes photooxidation to form a ferrocenium species which in turn produces hydroxyl radical in an aqueous environment, which was confirmed via the bleaching reaction of p-nitrosodimethylaniline (RNO). FT exhibits efficient PDT activity against MCF-7 cancer cells with an IC50 value of 5.6 μM upon irradiation with 595

Nasal septal deviation in a mediaeval population.

In modern populations, there is evidence that nasal septal deviation (NSD) may be associated with maxillary sinusitis, and that those with NSD may differ in craniofacial morphology from those without or with less severe NSD. Whether these associations hold true for earlier populations has yet to be investigated. The current work is a step toward remedying this. The study group comes from a mediaeval English archaeological site. NSD was quantified using image analysis. Maxillary sinusitis was identified from new bone formation in the antrum. Cranial morphology was assessed using standard cranio

HIV-1 protecting CCR5-Delta32 allele in medieval Poland.

CCR5-Delta32 is the mutation in the chemokine receptor CCR5 that gives its homozygous carriers nearly complete protections from HIV-1 infection. Restricted almost exclusively to Europe, the mutation is thought to have originated in the continent and risen in frequency to the present-day value of approximately 10% due to a selective advantage it gave its carriers. The mutation bearing allele was initially calculated to be approximately 1000 years old and pandemic diseases, such as Bubonic Plague or smallpox were postulated to have selected it. However, new reports appear, that question these hy

A draft genome of Yersinia pestis from victims of the Black Death.

Technological advances in DNA recovery and sequencing have drastically expanded the scope of genetic analyses of ancient specimens to the extent that full genomic investigations are now feasible and are quickly becoming standard. This trend has important implications for infectious disease research because genomic data from ancient microbes may help to elucidate mechanisms of pathogen evolution and adaptation for emerging and re-emerging infections. Here we report a reconstructed ancient genome of Yersinia pestis at 30-fold average coverage from Black Death victims securely dated to episodes o

Roentgencephalometric analysis of the skulls of the Luxemburgs, the second Bohemian Royal Dynasty.

X-ray films of the skull of the king and emperor Charles IV and his four wives and two sons were made under standard conditions with the mandibles fixed in a centric occlusion. The results of roentgenocephalometric analysis were compared with norms valid for the contemporary Czech population. Consistent with the somatic condition of Charles IV, the findings indicate an above-average large face with the usual anteriorotational developmental type. The facial skeleton is structurally harmonious, but the sagittal intermaxillary relations belong into skeletal class II with a relatively retruded low

The radiology of excavated Saxon and medieval human remains from Winchester.

Radiography of many of the human bones discovered during the archeological excavations at Winchester has been an integral part of the study of the Saxon and medieval populations found there. Thus, a radiological study of bone pathology in successive populations from a single site spanning a period of 600 years is presented.

Hemifacial microsomia (oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum) in an individual from the Teramo Sant'Anna archaeological site (7th-12th centuries of the Common Era, Italy).

BACKGROUND: This study is based in an analysis of the skeletal remains of an adult male from the Teramo Sant'Anna archaeological site (7th-12th centuries of the Common Era, Teramo, Italy). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The individual shows distinct abnormalities that principally involve asymmetric hypoplasia and dysmorphogenesis of the facial skeleton. The combination of these findings and the absence of abnormalities of the spine strongly suggest diagnosis of the congenital malformation known as hemifacial microsomia. This very heterogeneous syndrome affects primarily aural, ocular, oral and mandi

Preservation of cell structures in a medieval infant brain: a paleohistological, paleogenetic, radiological and physico-chemical study.

Cerebral tissues from archaeological human remains are extremely rare findings. Hereby, we report a multidisciplinary study of a unique case of a left cerebral hemisphere from a 13th century AD child, found in north-western France. The cerebral tissue-reduced by ca. 80% of its original weight-had been fixed in formalin since its discovery. However, it fully retained its gross anatomical characteristics such as sulci, and gyri; the frontal, temporal and occipital lobe as well as grey and white matter could be readily recognised. Neuronal remains near the hippocampus area and Nissl bodies from t

A case of spinal tuberculosis from the middle ages in Transylvania (Romania).

STUDY DESIGN: Case report. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the paleopathology presented in the skeleton of a 45- to 50-year-old man indicative of tuberculous spondylitis and to confirm by the detection of ancient DNA. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease prevalent in both present and ancient human populations. The disease is primarily located within the lungs; although characteristic bone lesions can lead to a clear diagnosis, skeletal TB occurs in only 5% to 6% of TB infections, even in historical cases. In addition, the visual appearance of human skeletal remai

Regarding pandemics: Ibn Jatima from Almería anticipates the physiopathological concept of multi-organ failure in the 14th century.

In 1348, a pandemic known as Black Death devastated humanity and changed social, economic and geopolitical world order, as is the current case with SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. The doctor of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada, Ibn-Jatima from Almeria, wrote "Treatise on the Plague", in which it may be found epidemiological and clinical similarities between both plagues. In the context of Greco-Arab medicine, he discovered respiratory and contact contagion of Pestis and attributed its physiopathology to a lack of pulmonary cooling of the innate heat, generated in the heart and carried by the blood humor.

A medieval murder.

On rare occasion, the body or skeleton of a murder victim may be discovered hundreds of years, or even millennia, after the crime. The murder of the 5000-year-old Stone Age man, found frozen in the ice of the Italian Alps, being the most recent example. In most of these cases too much time has passed to allow the application of modern forensic technology. We describe here a homicide that occurred between 1310 and 1390. The victim died of a crossbow injury, with a bolt passing between the 2nd and 3rd vertebrae, completely transecting the brainstem. The crossbow was, for more than 2 and one half

Rape: sexual assault.

Forcible rape is a violent crime, as are all cases of sexual assault. In more than one-third of the cases, the victims are children, and a significant number of victims are elderly women. Although few of these victims have serious physical injuries, they all suffer psychological trauma that will affect their lives and the lives of those around them. All of these victims need medical care and psychologic counseling if they are to adjust and reenter society without difficulty.
