Dental fluorosis and nutritional status of 6- to 11-year-old children living in rural areas of Paraíba, Brazil.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between nutritional status and dental fluorosis in areas with fluoride in the drinking water in Paraíba, Brazil. Rural villages of comparable low socio-economic status and stable water fluoride levels were selected. Lifelong residents (6-11 years old, n = 650) were examined for nutritional status (height-for-age index; WHO methods) and dental fluorosis of central incisors and first molars (TF index). The sample was divided into three groups according to fluoride levels in the drinking water: low (below 0.7 ppm F, n = 164), medium (betwe

Association between pneumonia and oral care in nursing home residents.

Pneumonia remains the leading cause of death in nursing home residents. The accumulation of dental plaque and colonization of oral surfaces and dentures with respiratory pathogens serves as a reservoir for recurrent lower respiratory tract infections. Control of gingivitis and dental plaques has been effective in reducing the rate of pneumonia but the provision of dental care for institutionalized elderly is inadequate, with treatment often sought only when patients experience pain or denture problems. Direct mechanical cleaning is thwarted by the lack of adequate training of nursing staff and

Clinical indicators of probing attachment loss following initial periodontal treatment in advanced periodontitis patients.

16 advanced periodontitis patients were subjected to initial periodontal treatment and monitored every 3rd month during 42 months. Clinical characteristics at baseline and during the 42-month maintenance period were investigated for their association with probing attachment loss over the 42-month period, both on a patient level and on a site level. On a patient level, averaged full-mouth plaque and bleeding on probing scores over the maintenance interval showed little association with probing attachment loss. Little association was also observed for % sites with depth > or = 6 mm at baseline.

Brushing-induced effects with and without a non-fluoride abrasive dentifrice on remineralization of enamel surfaces etched with phosphoric acid.

The remineralization of acid-etched enamel after brushing with and without a non-fluoride abrasive dentifrice was investigated using scanning electron microscopy after sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) or ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid treatment, of the specimens. Ground enamel pieces were etched with 30% phosphoric acid for 60 s and attached to resin plates. They were exposed to the oral environment of 4 subjects for 8 weeks and brushed for 1 min daily. Paste and brushing caused the acid-etched enamel to erode selectively, i.e., deep grooves were formed in the prism peripheral regions, while pro

Multivariate survival analysis for the identification of factors associated with cavity formation in permanent first molars.

This investigation used a multivariate survival model, which allowed for dependent caries data with possible censoring, to analyse the impact of timing of tooth emergence, gender and several reported oral hygiene and dietary habits on the incidence of cavity formation in permanent first molars (PFM) in young children. A 6-yr prospective oral health screening project in Flanders, Belgium, provided clinical and questionnaire data on 4,468 children. The results revealed that PFM in children who reported frequent brushing, who had no visible caries experience in the primary dentition, and who pres

Comparison of mechanical and surface properties of two 3D printed composite resins for definitive restoration.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Additive manufacturing (AM) technology is emerging as an innovative approach in the dental field. In recent years, manufacturers have introduced 3-dimensionally printed composite resins (3D-CRs) that are specifically designed for the AM of definitive prostheses; however, the mechanical and surface properties of these materials require investigation. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess and compare the mechanical and surface properties of 2 commercially available 3D-CRs for definitive restoration after artificial aging. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Saremco

Salivary Proteins and Metabolites as Caries Biomarkers in Adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: The identification of salivary molecules that can be associated to dental caries could provide insights about caries risk and offer valuable information to develop caries prediction models. However, the search for a universal caries biomarker has proven elusive due to the multifactorial nature of this oral disease. We have therefore performed a systematic effort to identify caries-associated metabolites and proteins in saliva samples from adolescents that had a caries experience and those that were caries-free. METHODS: Quantification of approximately 100 molecules was performed

Prevalence of chronic periodontitis in an obese population: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic periodontitis (CP) is a global public health issue. Studies have suggested CP could be linked to obesity due to their similar pathophysiological pathway. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of CP and to assess the predictors for CP among the obese Malaysian population. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study on obese participants. Obesity is defined as an individual who has Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥ 27.5 kg/m(2). A convenience sampling method was used. A total of 165 paricipants were recruited. This study involved answering questionnaires, obtaining biometr

Dental caries in adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a population-based follow-up study.

This study tested the hypothesis that adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) exhibit a higher prevalence of caries than adolescents in a control group. Thirty-two adolescents with ADHD and a control group of 55 adolescents from a population-based sample, all 17 yr of age, underwent a clinical and radiographic dental examination. The mean ± SD number of decayed surfaces (DS) was 2.0 ± 2.2 in adolescents with ADHD and 0.9 ± 1.4 in adolescents of the control group. Thirty-one per cent of the adolescents in the ADHD group had no new caries lesions (DS = 0) compared with 6
