OBJECTIVE: Because Helicobacter pylori creates a well-sheltered microenvironment within the gastric mucus layer, it has been speculated that the disruption of this space by a mucolytic agent may enhance the eradication rate. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of erdosteine, a strong mucolytic agent, on the effectiveness of PPI-based, first-line triple therapy in the eradication of H. pylori.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Initially, 196 patients were enrolled to the study. Of these, 79 H. pylori-positive patients were randomized to the erdosteine group (triple therapy consistin

Three Arcobacter isolates, recovered from mussels (genus Mytilus), and one isolate from brackish water in Catalonia (north-east Spain) showed a novel pattern using a recently described identification method for members of the genus Arcobacter, 16S rRNA gene RFLP. Enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus PCR fingerprinting demonstrated that the three isolates from mussels belonged to two genotypes and that the fourth isolate from water belonged to a third genotype. Analysis of the 16S rRNA and rpoB gene sequences showed that the new isolates formed a separate lineage within the genus Arc

BACKGROUND: The trefoils factor family is a relatively new family of peptides. Their abundant expression in the epithelial cells of the gastrointestinal tract in the normal physiological state and in various ulcerative conditions suggests an important role in mucosal defense and repair. Infection with Helicobacter pylori interferes with normal mucosal activity.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether H. pylori infection alters the expression of trefoils TFF1 and TFF2 in the gastric mucosa of patients with H. pylori-associated chronic active gastritis, positive or negative for the CagA strain.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Diagnostic methods for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection can be divided into invasive endoscopic methods and non-invasive methods. A typical and widely used non-invasive method is the 13C urea breath test (UBT). In this study, the possibility of a correlation between pre-treatment UBT values with H. pylori antimicrobial resistance is investigated.
METHODOLOGY: The subjects were 119 consecutive patients who attended this hospital for H. pylori testing. Average age was 47.5 +/- 13.2 years, with a male:female ratio of 2.05:1. The diagnosis was gastric ulcer in 43 subject

BACKGROUND: Efficacy of Helicobacter pylori stool antigen enzyme immunoassay (HpSA) and stool PCR was evaluated, before and after treatment, in a country with a high prevalence of H. pylori infection.
METHODOLOGY: A total of 52 patients with dyspeptic symptoms were included in the study. Antral biopsy was collected during pre- and post-therapy periods for rapid urease test (RUT) and PCR. Similarly stool specimens for PCR and HpSA test were collected during both the periods from all 52 patients. Biopsy, PCR and RUT results together were considered the "gold standard."

Helicobacter pylori is an important pathogen worldwide. Accurate diagnosis and appropriate therapy is important in clinical practice. Invasive tests that accurately identify current infection include the biopsy urease test and histology. The best noninvasive tests for diagnosis include the urea breath test and stool antigen testing. Proton pump inhibitor therapy can lead to false-negative H. pylori test results, and treatment should be stopped for 1-2 weeks prior to testing if possible. In the setting of bleeding peptic ulcer disease, urea breath testing is recommended to rule out a false-nega

Infection with Helicobacter pylori may be associated with a variety of gastroduodenal diseases. Although H. pylori infection is common, peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer occur in only a small minority of infected persons. This work was intended to correlate the pathological findings with the serological response to certain H. pylori antigens. Serum samples were taken from 285 patients who underwent gastroscopy. H. pylori infection was diagnosed by histology, culture or rapid urease test (RUT). Serum IgG reactivity against H. pylori-specific antigens was studied by Western blot. There was

Results of clinical and instrumental-laboratory study of 17 cases are presented. According to the rapid urease test (CLO) and histological studies, the helicobacter infection was found in 12 (70.6%) cases out of the group of 17 suffering from chronic atrophic gastritis, gastric ulcer adenomatous polyposis. Analyses of Helicobacter pylori dissemination over the gastric mucosa manifested the I (weak) degree (up to 20 microbes within field of vision) prevailing in 8 (66.7%) of 12 cases, while the II (medium) degree (up to 50 microbes within field of vision) and III (high) degree (over 50 microbes

Host response plays a major role in the pathogenesis of Helicobacter pylori-induced gastroduodenal disease including adenocarcinoma of the distal stomach. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is an important modulator of gastric mucosal repair and is overexpressed in gastric cancer. The present study sought to evaluate the expression of VEGF in the gastric mucosa of H. pylori-infected and H. pylori-non-infected dyspeptic patients. Fifteen H. pylori-infected and 15 H. pylori-non-infected dyspeptic patients were studied. Diagnosis of H. pylori infection was based on rapid urease test and hi

Helicobacter pylori is a spiral, gram-negative rod-shaped pathogen that attaches to gastric epithelial cells in the human stomach and is a causative agent of chronic active gastritis, peptic ulcer and neoplasia. H. pylori is one of the most common pathogens afflicting humans and is the major environmental factor in the development of gastric cancer increasing from 4 to 6 folds the risk of its development. Several specific virulence factors are implicated in the mechanism of H. pylori infection like the bacterial motility; the secretion of large amounts of urease; specific adhesins for the inte

UNLABELLED: The role of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in etiopathogenesis of gastritis and/or duodenitis is well recognized and proven. H. pylori infection also concerns children and youth. It was proven that CagA(+) strains of H. pylori cause inflammatory changes and can lead to ulcer disease of ventriculum and/or duodenum.
AIM: The purpose of the study was to determine the prevalence of urease A and cytotoxicity genes in children with diagnosed H. pylori infection and concomitant gastritis and/or duodenitis as well as to determine the kind and stadium of inflammatory changes in

Aspirin is widely used for its antiplatelet activity, but it harbors a risk of severe adverse gastrointestinal effects, such as bleeding and perforation, especially in elderly people. Our aim to assess the prevalence of upper gastrointestinal lesions and the effect of aspirin on the gastrointestinal mucosa in asymptomatic subjects taking minidose aspirin (100 to 325 mg per day) for more than 3 months. A prospective, open design was used. Patients attending the ophthalmology and cardiology outpatient clinics who had a medical history of more than 3 months of regular aspirin consumption were ref

Development of a vaccine against H. pylori is regarded as desirable alternative to the current antibiotic therapy regimens. Mice immunized with an attenuated recombinant Salmonella typhimurium expressing H. pylori urease subunits A&B have dramatically reduced bacterial loads after a single dose. The mechanism(s) of protection against this largely extra-cellular pathogen are not fully understood. The aim of this study was to identify genes that were regulated specifically in response to immunization, in order to gain a broader picture of the immune response in the immunized gastric epithelium.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is among the most common bacterial infections in humans. In 1982, H. pylori was discovered by Marshal and Warren, demonstrating an association between H. pylori and ulcer disease. H. pylori is a gram-negative, S-shaped rod that produces enzymes like urease, catalase and oxidase. The mechanism of acquisition and transmission of H. pylori is unclear, although the most likely mode of transmission is fecal-oral and oral-oral. The mode of transmission is supported by studies that demonstrate viable H. pylori organisms can be cultured from the stool or vomitus of infe

A problem encountered in patients undergoing long-term catheterization of the urinary tract is that of encrustation and blockage of the catheter by crystalline bacterial biofilms. This is principally caused by the action of the urease-producing pathogen Proteus mirabilis. A major aim of this work is to develop materials resistant to encrustation. Here, the effects of polymer surface properties on the adhesion of P. mirabilis are examined. Spin-coated polymer films were characterized through contact angle measurements to give the Lifschitz-van der Waals, electron acceptor and electron donor ter

BACKGROUND: The current treatment for active duodenal ulcer implies a 4 weeks course with anti-secretory drugs and two antibiotics for 7 to 10 days in the case of Helicobacter pylori infection.
AIM: To establish whether triple therapy with omeprazole given for 7 days with two antibiotics eradicates H. pylori, heals and prevents ulcer recurrence.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 103 patients with active duodenal ulcer and H. pylori were randomly divided into: a group of 50 patients treated with omeprazole, clarithromycin and tinidazole for 7 days followed by omeprazole for 21 days, and a grou

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the hypothesis that chronic antigenic stimulation is an etiological factor of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) with special relevance to Helicobacter pylori infection.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective, observational study. The diagnosis of MGUS was based on serum protein electrophoresis, serum IgM levels (<3 gr/dl), urinary M protein, a normal bone marrow biopsy, normal renal function, and a negative skeletal survey. H. pylori infection was ascertained by rapid urease testing and endoscopy with gastric biopsy for histology. Eradic
