A cupulolith repositioning maneuver in the treatment of horizontal canal cupulolithiasis.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated outcomes and their significance of a new treatment method for horizontal canal cupulolithiasis that could be applied regardless of the side of the cupula where otoliths are attached. METHODS: Consecutive 78 patients who showed persistent apogeotropic horizontal canal positional vertigo (horizontal canal cupulolithiasis) were enrolled, and they were treated with the new cupulolith repositioning maneuver. RESULTS: Horizontal semicircular canal cupulolithiasis was alleviated in 97.4% of patients, after an average of 2.1 repetitions of the maneuver. Otoliths were suspecte

Volumetric atlas of the rat inner ear from microCT and iDISCO+ cleared temporal bones.

BACKGROUND: Volumetric atlases are an invaluable tool in neuroscience and otolaryngology, greatly aiding experiment planning and surgical interventions, as well as the interpretation of experimental and clinical data. The rat is a major animal model for hearing and balance studies, and a detailed volumetric atlas for the rat central auditory system (Waxholm) is available. However, the Waxholm rat atlas only contains a low-resolution inner ear featuring five structures. In the present work, we segmented and annotated 34 structures in the rat inner ear, yielding a detailed volumetric inner ear a

Focused Neuro-Otological Review of Superficial Siderosis of the Central Nervous System.

BACKGROUND: Infratentorial siderosis (iSS) is a progressive degenerative disorder targeting primarily the cerebellum and cranial nerve eighth; therefore, progressive ataxia and its neuro-otological findings are common. Toxicity from hemosiderin involves selectively vulnerable neurons and glia in these posterior fossa structures. Other neurologic findings may be present, though our focus relates to the cochlea-vestibular cerebellar involvement. Radiographic evidence of siderosis may be the result of recurrent, albeit covert bleeding in the subarachnoid space, or the consequence of an overt post

Selective role of partial XI-VII anastomosis in facial reanimation.

OBJECTIVES: Review techniques available for transposition of an alternative motor neuron if end-to-end anastomosis or interposition nerve grafting cannot be accomplished when there has been a complete facial nerve loss. Describe the selective use of a partial spinal accessory-facial nerve anastomosis and highlight cases when this may be a useful alternative. Describe the modifications of decompression of the facial nerve for tension-free anastomosis and the use of the muscle pedicle for repair of cerebrospinal fluid leakage. STUDY DESIGN: Report of three cases and a review of the literature.

Hypergravity susceptibility of ventral root activity during fictive swimming in tadpoles (Xenopus laevis).

1. Fictive swimming is an experimental model to study early motor development. As vestibular activity also affects the development of spinal motor projections, the present study focused on the question whether in Xenopus laevis tadpoles, the rhythmic activity of spinal ventral roots (VR) during fictive swimming revealed age-dependent modifications after hypergravity exposure. In addition, developmental characteristics for various features of fictive swimming between stages 37/38 and 47 were determined. Parameters of interest were duration of fictive swimming episodes, burst duration, burst fre

Distribution of bismuth in the brain after intraperitoneal dosing of bismuth subnitrate in mice: implications for routes of entry of xenobiotic metals into the brain.

Bismuth (Bi) can produce neurotoxic effects in both humans and animals under certain dosing conditions, but little else is known about the effects of Bi in the brain. In the present study we determined the distribution of Bi in the brains of adult female Swiss-Webster mice 4, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after a single 2500 mg/kg i.p. injection of Bi subnitrate (BSN), which establishes a depot of absorbable Bi and produces morphological signs of neurotoxicity. Sections of brains were processed by autometallographic (AMG) procedures that produced silver grains at the site of Bi localization (AMGBi). V

Banxia Baizhu Tianma Decoction improves posterior circulation ischemia vertigo in rats via gut microbiota and TLR4-NF-κB-MyD88 pathway.

BACKGROUND: Posterior circulation ischemia vertigo (PCIV) frequently presents with vestibular dysfunction in patients suffering from posterior circulation stroke. The conventional approaches often fail to address PCIV's complex pathophysiology, which involves neuroimmune dysregulation, hemodynamic abnormalities, and gut-brain axis disruption. Banxia Baizhu Tianma Decoction (BBTD), a traditional Chinese medicine, is employed in treating PCIV and vasogenic vertigo, but the mechanisms underlying its efficacy require further elucidation. PURPOSE: This study examines the therapeutic mechanisms and

Infrasonic hearing in birds: a review of audiometry and hypothesized structure-function relationships.

The perception of airborne infrasound (sounds below 20 Hz, inaudible to humans except at very high levels) has been documented in a handful of mammals and birds. While animals that produce vocalizations with infrasonic components (e.g. elephants) present conspicuous examples of potential use of infrasound in the context of communication, the extent to which airborne infrasound perception exists among terrestrial animals is unclear. Given that most infrasound in the environment arises from geophysical sources, many of which could be ecologically relevant, communication might not be the only use

Changes in serotonin and norepinephrine uptake sites after chronic cocaine: pre- vs. post-withdrawal effects.

Although acute cocaine is a strong reuptake inhibitor at dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE) and serotonin (5-HT) synapses, the effects of chronic cocaine on 5-HT and NE transporters have received less attention than its effects on DA transporters. In the present study, quantitative autoradiography was used to map effects of chronic cocaine exposure on the binding of [3H]nisoxetine and [3H]cyanoimipramine to NE and 5-HT transporters, respectively. Female Wistar rats were given increasing concentrations of cocaine in the drinking water for 4 weeks (mean dose during the final two weeks: approxima

The magnetic resonance imaging appearance of monophasic acute disseminated encephalomyelitis: an update post application of the 2007 consensus criteria.

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is an immunologically mediated inflammatory disease of the central nervous system that typically occurs after a viral infection or recent vaccination, and is most commonly seen in the pediatric population. In 2007 the International Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Study Group proposed a consensus definition for ADEM for application in research and clinical settings. This article gives an overview of ADEM in children, focusing on differences that have emerged since the consensus definition was established. Although the focus is on neuroimaging in these pa

Regulation of mitochondrial uncoupling proteins in mouse inner ear ganglion cells in response to systemic kanamycin challenge.

Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins are a proton transporter family involved in regulation mitochondrial superoxide and ATP production. Uncoupling proteins are expressed by rat spiral ganglion and vestibular ganglion cells [Hear Res 196 (2004) 39]. This study tests the hypothesis that uncoupling protein expression is up-regulated in response to the reactive oxygen species challenge imposed by kanamycin and antioxidant (2,3-dihydroxybenzoate) treatment in mice. In control C57BL/6, CBA/J and BALB/c mice, mRNA for uncoupling protein 1, uncoupling protein 2, uncoupling protein 3, Slc25a27 (uncouplin

Properties of transmission at a giant glutamatergic synapse in cerebellum: the mossy fiber-unipolar brush cell synapse.

1. The synaptic activation by mossy fibers (MFs) of unipolar brush cells (UBCs) in the vestibular cerebellum (nodulus and uvula) was examined using patch-clamp recording methods in thin, rat cerebellar slices with Lucifer yellow-filled pipettes for subsequent fluorescence microscopic verification of the cell morphology. 2. UBCs were distinguished from adjacent granule cells in thin cerebellar slices in the uvula and nodulus regions by their larger soma diameters and short dendritic brush, greater whole-cell capacitance, and a prolonged, biphasic excitatory postsynaptic current (EPSC) to stimul

Nutritional Mushroom Treatment in Meniere's Disease with Coriolus versicolor: A Rationale for Therapeutic Intervention in Neuroinflammation and Antineurodegeneration.

Meniere's disease (MD) represents a clinical syndrome characterized by episodes of spontaneous vertigo, associated with fluctuating, low to medium frequencies sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), tinnitus, and aural fullness affecting one or both ears. To date, the cause of MD remains substantially unknown, despite increasing evidence suggesting that oxidative stress and neuroinflammation may be central to the development of endolymphatic hydrops and consequent otholitic degeneration and displacement in the reuniting duct, thus originating the otolithic crisis from vestibular otolithic organs ut

Usefulness of vertebrobasilar artery radiological finding as a predictive and prognostic factor for sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: The association between sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) and radiological findings of the vertebrobasilar artery is not well-known and little research has been done. We hypothesized that the radiological features of the vertebrobasilar artery contribute to the incidence and prognosis of SSNHL. METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled patients diagnosed with unilateral SSNHL (SSNHL group) and those with acute vestibular neuritis (AVN; control group) in our hospital. All patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography. We measured the following parameters o

Precocious neuronal differentiation and disrupted oxygen responses in Kabuki syndrome.

Chromatin modifiers act to coordinate gene expression changes critical to neuronal differentiation from neural stem/progenitor cells (NSPCs). Lysine-specific methyltransferase 2D (KMT2D) encodes a histone methyltransferase that promotes transcriptional activation and is frequently mutated in cancers and in the majority (>70%) of patients diagnosed with the congenital, multisystem intellectual disability disorder Kabuki syndrome 1 (KS1). Critical roles for KMT2D are established in various non-neural tissues, but the effects of KMT2D loss in brain cell development have not been described. We con

Characteristics of etiological diagnostic workup across the past 10 years in patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage in a large general hospital.

OBJECTIVE: A swift and accurate diagnosis of etiology would lay the foundation of targeted management for patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (SICH). It is unclear what the status of diagnostic workup related to etiology is in Chinese hospitals which treat the majority of the hemorrhagic patients in the world. We aim to demonstrate characteristics on diagnostic workup implemented routinely in both departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery in patients with SICH. METHODS: We enrolled patients with SICH from March 2002 to December 2011 from Chengdu stroke registry. Data on diagnos

The quality of preterm infants' spontaneous movements: an early indicator of intelligence and behaviour at school age.

BACKGROUND: The quality of very preterm infants' spontaneous movements at 11 to 16 weeks post-term age is a powerful predictor of their later neurological status. This study investigated whether early spontaneous movements also have predictive value for the intellectual and behavioural problems that children born very preterm often experience. METHODS: Spontaneous movement quality was assessed, using Prechtl's method, at 11 to 16 weeks post-term in 65 infants born at <or= 33 weeks of gestation in a single centre. Intelligence and behaviour were assessed with standardised tests at 7 to 11 year

Common Neurologic Diseases in Geriatric Dogs.

The increase in the canine geriatric population means that veterinarians are more often confronted with diseases that are more prevalent in patients in this age group. As in other organ systems, degenerative, neoplastic, and vascular diseases are the most prevalent neurologic disorders in older dogs. A neurological disease in an older dog poses a challenge for the clinician due to the presence of concomitant diseases and age-related changes that make it difficult to interpret the neurological examination. In addition, given the age of the patients, some owners do not allow advanced imaging tes
