Fine-needle aspiration diagnosis of intra-thoracic and intra-abdominal lesions: review of experience in the pediatric age group.

Review of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) smears from 121 pediatric patients with intra-thoracic and intra-abdominal lesions revealed 42 (34.7%) cases of neoplasms, 35 (28.9%) cases of tuberculosis, 12 (9.9%) cases of non-tuberculous inflammations, 4 (3.3%) cases of benign cystic lesions, and 28 (23.1%) inadequate/inconclusive cases. The age of the patients ranged from 20 days to 18 yr. Ultrasound and/or CT study done in 105 cases localized the lesions in following common sites: lungs (19 cases), mediastinum (22 cases), liver (14 cases), intestines (11 cases), and lymph nodes (17 cases). The neop

The coexistence of Wilms' tumor and imperforate anus with rectourethral fistula.

Wilms' tumor or nephroblastoma is one of the more common abdominal neoplasms in childhood. Its association with aniridia, hemihypertrophy, and genitourinary anomalies is well recognized. We believe this is the first report of Wilms' tumor coexistent with imperforate anus and rectourethral fistula.

[A rare case of a giant intra-abdominal mesocolic liposarcoma].

Intra-abdominal liposarcomas (IALS) represent a rare localization compared to other liposarcomatous (LS) sites such as the lower extremities and the retroperitoneum. The authors report their experience in a case of giant liposarcoma (weight: Kg 8.2) presenting a massive intra-abdominal extension. Diagnostic and therapeutic problems related to this type of neoplasm as well as a literature review are reported.

Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm Causing Equivocal Appendicitis: A Case Report.

Appendicitis is one of the most common diagnoses that general surgeons encounter in practice. An exceedingly rare cause of this disease is neoplasm. We report the case of a 24-year-old female who presented with non-specific right lower quadrant abdominal pain and equivocal findings of appendicitis and pelvic congestion syndrome on CT imaging. After an extensive work-up, the patient underwent a diagnostic laparoscopy with an appendectomy. The appendix appeared grossly normal; however, on a pathologic review of the specimen, a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) was found. This case i

Postoperative retroperitoneal desmoid tumor mimics recurrent gastrointestinal stromal tumor: a case report.

Desmoid tumor is a locally invasive, myofibroblastic, nonmetastatic tumor. Its pathogenesis remains unclear and it may involve genetic abnormalities, sex hormones and traumatic injury, including surgery. Postoperative intra-abdominal desmoid tumor is rare, especially in the retroperitoneum. We report a case of postoperative retroperitoneal desmoid tumor that developed 29 mo after the first excision of a gastrointestinal stromal tumor. Sporadic trauma-related intra-abdominal desmoid tumors reported in the English literature are also reviewed. Despite an extremely low incidence, postoperative de

Pediatric Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma of the Cecum.

Background: Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) is a high-grade neoplasm typically diagnosed in older adults and localized to the extremities or retroperitoneum. Because of poor response to therapy and high rates of recurrence, this neoplasm is associated with a poor prognosis. Case Report: A 12-year-old female presented with weight loss, abdominal pain, fatigue, and diarrhea. She was profoundly anemic with occult blood-positive stools. On endoscopy, a fungating cecal mass was biopsied and diagnosed as malignant sarcomatoid neoplasm. The neoplasm was resected with clear margins during s

Adenocarcinoma of the Appendix Presenting as a Palpable Right Thigh Mass.

Intra-abdominal and intra-pelvic pathologies initially presenting in extra-abdominal/pelvic locations is unusual. This spread predominantly occurs with infectious processes to sites including the buttock, thigh, and calf. The routes of extension into adjacent anatomically weak compartments include the pelvic outlet, greater sciatic foramen, obturator foramen, inguinal or femoral canal, weak bones, or along nerves and blood vessels. Malignant neoplasms of the appendix, while extremely rare and accounting for only 0.4% of all gastrointestinal cancers, is one of the intra-abdominal pathologies th

Incidence of abdominal tumors in syndromic and idiopathic hemihypertrophy/isolated hemihyperplasia.

BACKGROUND: There is a reported increased risk of intra-abdominal tumors in children with both syndromic (SH) and isolated idiopathic hemihyperplasia (IH). Recommendations for tumor surveillance have been made, although there is no consensus for frequency and duration of screening. Our objective was to review the incidence of abdominal neoplasms in our pediatric population with SH and IH. METHODS: We reviewed the diagnostic criteria, imaging findings, and any associated syndrome in all patients diagnosed with hemihypertrophy over a 10-year period. RESULTS: One of 10 patients with SH, a child

Leiomyoma of the uterine round ligament: A case report.

Leiomyomas are common benign tumours that can arise in any anatomical structure containing smooth muscle. Their localization in the uterine round ligament is rare, although leiomyomas are the most frequent tumour of this structure. Leiomyomas present as inguinal, labial or intra-abdominal masses, and are often misdiagnosed as hernias or enlarged lymph nodes. The aim of the present study was to describe a rare case of a large intra-abdominal mesenchymal neoplasm arising from the right round ligament of the uterus. A 51-year-old asymptomatic female patient (gravida 3, para 3) presented herself f

Massive ovarian edema: a case of over 30 cm ovarian mass in young woman.

Massive ovarian edema is a rare entity that can be confused with ovarian neoplasm. A 20-year-old nulligravid woman presented with a large solid pelvic mass and abdominal mass. On examination a solid mass was found which extended from the pelvis until over the umbilical transversal line. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a solid non-homogenous mass originating from the right ovary with largest diameter of over 30 cm, fine internal echoes, regular margins, and poor vascularization. The abdominal computed tomography (CT) image was non-contributory. Blood work including hematology and biochemistry was

Diagnostic accuracy of a single qualitative immunochemical fecal occult blood test coupled with physical measurements.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to improve the sensitivity of immunochemical fecal occult blood test (I-FOBT) to screen colorectal neoplasm among average-risk adults. METHODS: This is a diagnostic cohort study. All health examination participants receiving a single qualitative I-FOBT and a screening colonoscopy from January 2010 to June 2011 were included. Stool specimens were collected for I-FOBT before colonoscopy. Using pathology as gold standard, significant colorectal neoplasm was defined as advanced adenoma or malignancy. RESULTS: A total of 1 007 health examinees were identified. Fifty-five (5.5

Imaging of the ischiorectal fossa.

A retrospective evaluation of 500 routine abdominal computed tomography scans revealed 21 cases of ischiorectal fossa disease in 16 patients. Pathologic processes included involvement by primary and secondary neoplasms, usually of gynecologic origin; rectal prolapse; and abscess. These abnormalities can be missed if the ischiorectal fossae are not included in routine abdominal scans. The anatomy of the ischiorectal fossae and their relationship to other pelvic organs are well demonstrated with high-resolution computed tomography scans as well as by magnetic resonance imaging.

Hairball--a case of mistaken identity.

We report a classical presentation of trichobezoar in an 8 year old girl who was referred for consultation querying a probable abdominal neoplasm in the left upper quadrant. A large mobile mass was palpable in the left upper quadrant extending toward the umbilicus. Of note, she also had symptoms of recurrent abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and halitosis. Although a rare occurrence, trichobezoar must be considered as a differential diagnosis in a patient who had a history of pica, presenting with an abdominal mass.

Anaplastic neoplasm in a patient with hairy cell leukemia.

A 63-year-old white man had a history of recurrent pneumonia, pancytopenia, and splenomegaly when the diagnosis of hairy cell leukemia was made on bone marrow biopsy examination. Splenectomy confirmed that diagnosis and his pancytopenia moderately improved. Three years following the diagnosis, the patient developed an upper abdominal mass involving the stomach wall that was found to be an anaplastic "large cell" neoplasm. Palliative radiotherapy was started, but the patient died 2 months later. Cytochemical studies of the anaplastic gastric neoplasm revealed cytoplasmic tartrate resistant acid

Lipoplastic lymphadenopathy presenting as an ovarian mass: a case report.

Lipoplastic lymphadenopathy is a pathological condition wherein accumulations of intranodal fat result in lymph node enlargement and may mimic abdominal, pelvic, and retroperitoneal neoplasms, particularly lymphomas. The pathology appears to be different from lipomatosis in that benign, mature adipocytes and lipids are located within lymph nodes, rather than deposited in body cavities. The case of a 49-year-old woman presenting as an ovarian neoplasm is presented as an example of the pathology and its ability to masquerade as other neoplasms. The etiology of lipoplastic lymphadenopathy is uncl

A rare finding of Actinomyces odontolyticus abdominal actinomycosis presenting as abdominal wall and pericolic pseudotumoral mass.

Abdominal actinomycosis refers to a rare chronic suppurative infectious occurrence, caused by filamentous Gram-positive microaerophilic and anaerobic bacteria Actinomyces, that may appear as an abdominal mass and/or abscess, feasibly mimicking a malignancy 1,2. Due to its rarity and unspecific clinical evidence, the majority of cases are diagnosed after tissue specimen. We hereby report a case of a 69-year-old patient with a one week worsening abdominal pain and swelling. A large tender palpable mass in the epigastric region was noted on physical exam. An ultrasound-guided drainage followed by

Case report: actinomycosis of the abdominal wall.

Primary abdominal wall actinomycosis is rare, but even rarer when it comes to intestinal infiltration; it is usually misdiagnosed as a neoplasm in computed tomography till proved otherwise with pathological examination. We report a 59-year-old diabetic male presented with a year-old abdominal wall mass, diagnosed by pathology after surgical excisional biopsy, and treated with penicillin for 6 months. We recommend consideration of actinomycosis in cases of abdominal wall mass, especially in immunocompromised patients, as a differential diagnosis of neoplastic lesions.

Solid and cystic papillary neoplasm of the pancreas in a 18-year-old female: a case report.

CONTEXT: Solid and cystic papillary neoplasm of the pancreas is an extremely rare neoplasm that mostly affects young females in the mean age of 25 years and accounts for about 0.2-2.7% of all pancreatic tumors. CASE REPORT: A 18-year-old female presented with progressively increasing mass in the left hypochondrium and epigastric regions and vague abdominal pain. There was no history of jaundice and vomiting. The mean diameter of the tumors was 17x24 cm. Preoperative core needle revealed solid and cystic papillary neoplasm. Distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy were performed. The patient did
