How to increase academic performance in children with oppositional defiant disorder? An implicit theory effect.

The aim of the present study was to determine whether the implicit theory effect extends to children with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), with academic difficulties. Twenty-five male children, aged 8-11 years with ODD were randomly assigned to one of two experimental conditions (Incremental Theory highlighting the possibility of self-improvement vs. control). An increase of cognitive performance (IQ) was found for children with ODD in the incremental condition, but not in the control condition. This cognitive improvement could be viewed as a protective factor for children and adolescents

Associations of physical fitness with sustained overt attention and academic performance in children with learning disabilities.

Physical fitness has consistently been linked to cognitive and academic performance, with sustained attention recognized as a key predictor of academic success (DOI 10.1123/apaq.2019-0108). However, few studies have explored whether sustained attention moderate the relationship between physical fitness and academic performance in children with learning disabilities (LD), and existing findings remain inconclusive due to certain limitations. This study investigated the moderating role of sustained attention in the association between physical fitness and academic performance among children with

Intrauterine growth restriction - a population-based study of the association with academic performance and psychiatric health.

AIM: To investigate whether intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), resulting in small for gestational age (SGA) infants, is associated with increased susceptibility to psychiatric problems and academic impairment in late teens. METHODS: A cohort of all 10th-grade students in Oslo, Norway, followed up between 2001 and 2004 (n = 2131), was linked with foetal growth data. IUGR was considered equal to SGA at the lowest 2.5th, 5th, and 10th percentiles and appropriate for gestational age (AGA) as the highest 90th percentile. Mental health was evaluated using the Hopkins Symptoms Check List and th

The effects of reciprocal peer tutoring and group contingencies on the academic performance of elementary school children.

We evaluated the effects of reciprocal peer tutoring combined with group reinforcement contingencies on the arithmetic performance of 12 underachieving fifth-grade students. Results indicated that the intervention increased the students' arithmetic performance to a level indistinguishable from their classmates during treatment and 12-week follow-up phases. Pre-, post-, and follow-up sociometric data indicated that the students who participated in the treatment groups increased their amount of peer affiliation with other treatment group members.

Impact of uncorrected hyperopia on visual function and academic performance in preschool and school-age children.

Many children with a moderate amount of farsightedness do not see as well up close as children who are not farsighted, and they often have significantly more problems with near visual function (near visual acuity, stereoacuity, and accommodation), early literacy skills, reading, and attention. Problems with early literacy skills often lead to difficulties with reading in first grade and beyond. Controversy exists among eye care providers regarding whether moderately hyperopic children have adequate visual function without correction or whether correction provides benefit. Furthermore, the effe

Outcomes of dermatologist-performed skin cancer screening in an academic setting: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of skin cancer improves outcomes, but the utility of dermatologist-performed total body skin examinations (TBSEs) in unselected populations remains uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnostic yield, biopsy burden, and temporal trends of dermatologist-led TBSEs in an academic screening program. METHODS: This retrospective cohort included 3127 encounters from 1572 University of Miami employees and spouses who underwent annual TBSEs between January 2019 and June 2024. Primary outcomes were detection of premalignant (actinic keratoses) and malignant lesions (basa

Association of Apgar score at 5 minutes with academic performance and intelligence in youth: A cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: The Apgar score is routinely given at childbirth worldwide. A low Apgar score at 5 minutes is a strong predictor for neonatal death. Scores below 7 have been associated with higher risks of later neurologic disability. Few studies have assessed the association between Apgar score and school performance and intelligence. The existing literature points towards a possible association between Apgar score and later cognitive function, but the contradictions call for further investigation to fully understand the potential association. This study aimed to examine the possible associatio

The association between anxiety and academic performance in children with reading disorder: A longitudinal cohort study.

The purpose of this study was to examine the association between anxiety and overall academic performance (AP) in children with reading disorder (RD). This two-year longitudinal cohort study included 128 participants (aged 7-14 years) with RD. Anxiety symptoms were evaluated using the School Anxiety Scale - Teacher Report for the first year and the eight-item Spence Children's Anxiety Scale for the second year. AP was assessed by teacher ratings of progress in academic content areas, including reading, writing and math. Teachers completed evaluations every 3 months. We standardized all scores

Associations of Alpha and Beta Interhemispheric EEG Coherences with Indices of Attentional Control and Academic Performance.

UNLABELLED: Introduction. Heretofore, research on optimizing academic performance has suffered from an inability to translate what is known about an individual's learning behaviors to how effectively they are able to use the critical nodes and hubs in their cerebral cortex for learning. A previous study from our laboratory suggests that lower theta-beta ratios (TBRs) measured by EEG may be associated with higher academic performance in a medical school curriculum. METHODS: In this study, we tested the hypothesis that TBR and academic performance may be correlated with EEG coherence, a measure

Design and implementation of an academic enrichment program to improve performance on the internal medicine in-training exam.

The internal medicine In-Training Exam (ITE) is administered at residency training programs to assess medical knowledge. Our internal medicine residency program witnessed a performance decline on the ITE between 2011 and 2014. The goal of this quality improvement project was to improve medical knowledge among residents as measured by an improvement in performance on the ITE, through the design and implementation of an Academic Enrichment Program (AEP). The AEP was designed in 2014-2015, and entailed a multipronged approach, including strengthening and tailoring of the didactic curriculum, esta

The effect of hemisphere specific remediation strategies on the academic performance outcome of children with ADD/ADHD.

The development and normal function of the cerebrum is largely dependent on sub-cortical structures, such as the cerebellum and basal ganglia. Dysfunction in these areas can affect both the nonspecific arousal system and information transfer in the brain. Dysfunction of this sort often results in motor and sensory symptoms commonly seen in children with ADD/ADHD. These brain regions have been reported to be underactive, with that underactivity restricted to the right or left side of the sub-cortical and cortical regions. An imbalance of activity or arousal of one side of the cortex can result

The correlation between tonsil size and academic performance is not a direct one, but the results of various factors.

Chronic upper airway obstruction most often occurs when both tonsils and adenoid are enlarged but may occur when either is enlarged. Obstructive sleep syndrome in young children has been reported to be associated with an adverse effect on learning and academic performance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of relative size of the tonsil on academic performance in 4th grade school children. In 320 children, physical examination to determine the size of tonsils was performed by the otorhinolaryngologist. A questionnaire was developed to assess sleep patterns and problems, and soci

Conscientiousness and Academic Performance in Medical Students: A Systematic Review Across Training Stages and Assessment Types.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive measures explain only part of why some medical students perform well while others struggle. Conscientiousness is a promising non-cognitive factor, but evidence in medical education remains scattered, particularly regarding whether its association with performance varies across assessment types and stages of training. METHODS: This systematic review followed PRISMA 2020 guidance and examined the association between conscientiousness and academic performance in undergraduate medical students. PubMed, ScienceDirect, and PsycINFO were searched on 5 October 2025. Twelve studi

Social jetlag among Japanese adolescents: Association with irritable mood, daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and poor academic performance.

Social jetlag, a form of circadian misalignment, has been suggested to induce several clinical symptoms such as mental/physical health problems. However, evidence on the association of social jetlag with general daytime functioning (e.g., school life) is limited. This cross-sectional study aimed to 1) estimate the distribution of social jetlag exceeding one hour and 2) comprehensively explore the associations between social jetlag and irritable mood, daytime sleepiness, and poor academic performance among Japanese adolescents. The study included 4,782 students aged 12-15 years, from 13 junior
