Drawing on ecological systems theory, we investigate how microsystem components (i.e., individual characteristics and the family, school, and peer environments) collectively relate to English as a foreign language (EFL) achievement. To this end, we administered a cross-sectional questionnaire to 1395 Chinese middle school students and conducted a network analysis to model these relationships. The results indicated that dimensions of study engagement (dedication and vigor), teacher support, and family socioeconomic status (SES) were directly and positively associated with EFL achievement, where

BACKGROUND: Experimentation is crucial in chemistry education as it links practical experience with theoretical concepts. However, practical chemistry courses typically rely on real laboratory experiments and often face challenges such as limited resources, equipment shortages, and logistical constraints in university settings. To address these challenges, computer-based laboratories have been introduced as a potential solution, offering electronic simulations that replicate real laboratory experiences.
OBJECTIVE: This study examines the effect of virtual laboratories on the academic achievem

The convergent and discriminant validity of the parent version of the Child and Adolescent Behavior Inventory (CABI) symptom and impairment scale scores were evaluated with the scale scores from multiple methods including a semistructured diagnostic interview, rating scales, and an academic achievement test. Participants were 82 adolescents (70% male, 78% non-Hispanic White) aged 13 to 17 years (M = 15.01) diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (77% predominantly inattentive presentation) and parents. CABI scale scores showed moderate (rs = .42 to .49) to substantial (rs = .62

Objective: This study aimed to (a) identify longitudinal trajectories of emotional and conduct problems from middle childhood to early adolescence in a sample of 130 adolescents diagnosed with ADHD and (b) examine trajectories in relation to early adolescent academic achievement and engagement. Method: Group-based trajectory models (GBTMs) were constructed from the parent-rated strengths and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ) subscales of emotional and conduct problems at three time points, mean ages 10.7 years, 11.6 years, and 13.7 years. Associations between trajectories and adolescent academi

The aim of this study was to improve understanding of predictors of student success in dental school. A total of 178 student records from the Classes of 2015 and 2016 at a U.S. dental school were reviewed for this retrospective study. The records assessed included admissions files with such elements as scores on the Dental Admission Test (DAT), participation in a pipeline program, and undergraduate transcripts; academic records from the first term of dental school (class rank, course remediation, and withdrawal/dismissal from dental school); and National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) Part I

A risk to develop a learning disability has been shown to run in families. Having a positive family history of learning disability seems to account for mean differences in achievement outcomes (reading, math) in that children with a positive family history score significantly lower compared to their peers with no such family history. However, the role of family history status in explaining etiological (genetic and environmental) differences among these subgroups of children has yet to be established. The present study of 872 twins (Mage = 13.30, SDage = 1.40) from the Florida Twin Project on R

This study considers risk associated with family homelessness for school functioning and experimental evidence on the effects of different housing interventions over time. Students in homeless families (N = 172; Mage = 7.31; SD = 4.15) were randomized to housing interventions that focus on acute risks (community-based rapid rehousing), chronic risks (permanent subsidy), or usual care (UC). A matched group of low-income, housed students served as an additional reference for effects on attendance, school mobility, and reading and math achievement across 4 years. Findings partially support the c

Whether monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twins differ from each other in a variety of phenotypes is important for genetic twin modeling and for inferences made from twin studies in general. We analyzed whether there were differences in individual, maternal and paternal education between MZ and DZ twins in a large pooled dataset. Information was gathered on individual education for 218,362 adult twins from 27 twin cohorts (53% females; 39% MZ twins), and on maternal and paternal education for 147,315 and 143,056 twins respectively, from 28 twin cohorts (52% females; 38% MZ twins). BACKGROUND: Drug use disorder (DUD) clusters in families due partly to shared environment, including sibling influences. Low academic achievement (AA) in adolescence increases DUD risk. This study examined whether low AA in an older sibling causally increases DUD risk in younger siblings.
METHODS: We studied all Swedish full sibling pairs (n = 309,666) born 1972-1985 and ≤ 5 years apart. Older sibling AA was assessed at age 16. Using Month-of-Birth (MoB) as an instrument, we conducted instrumental variable (IV) analyses and propensity score (PS) models to evaluate the causal impact of older s

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to investigate the psychiatric evaluations for juvenile offenders.
METHODS: A total of 166 juvenile offenders were enrolled in this study. After diagnostic psychiatric interviews for 166 juvenile offenders, three groups of academic achievement (normal, academically challenged, and those suspended/dropouts from school). Different offenses, including those were against people, property, related to illicit drugs, or related to sex and delinquency and mental illness were also recorded. The relationship among the mental illness, types of offenses, and academic

BACKGROUND: Children's cognitive abilities play an important role throughout their academic career, but recent studies highlight the negative impacts of aggression, inattention, and impulsivity on academic success. These behaviors and traits are central to most externalizing (EXT) and neurodevelopmental (NDD) problems, which are substantially genetically influenced. We examined the mechanisms by which high levels of genetic predispositions to EXT and NDD problems associate with elevated mental health symptoms and subsequently lead to lower levels of academic achievement in two developmental pe

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Learning difficulties are frequently reported in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), yet little is known about the extent and predictors of their academic functions across ages. We aimed to examine the developmental patterns of academic achievement in these children from childhood to adolescence and how these patterns differ across demographic and NF1-related disease factors.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study integrated data of 1512 children with NF1 (mean age, 11.2 years, SD, 3.62, range, 3-18, 46.5% female patients) from 8 institutions. Academic functi

Dyslexia legislation has been increasingly enacted across US states to improve the early identification and support of students with dyslexia. However, little is known about the extent to which these laws have influenced dyslexia identification rates and reading achievement outcomes. We examined the impact of state dyslexia laws using repeated cross-sectional, student-level data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) fourth-grade reading assessments collected between 2003 and 2022. We assess changes in Specific Learning Disability (SLD) identification rates and reading per

BACKGROUND: Children with sickle cell disease (SCD) are at risk for neurocognitive deficits, which can lead to effects on academic performance and later job attainment. However, screening in children at high risk for poor academic performance (PAP) in a clinic setting has been limited. The goal was to identify young children with SCD at high risk for PAP via administration of a standardized screening tool at the clinic visit.
PROCEDURE: Parents of 20 patients were asked to complete the Behavior Assessment System for Children, 3rd edition (BASC-3) Parent Rating Scale. Children ages six to nine

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of otitis media (OM) and related hearing loss has remained persistently high among some groups of Australian Aboriginal children who are also reported to have poor academic outcomes. The general literature remains inconclusive about the association between OM-related hearing loss and academic performance in primary school. This study aimed to investigate this association in Aboriginal children living in the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia.
METHODS: A retrospective, observational cohort study was conducted for 2208 NT Aboriginal children, aged about 8 years, liv

Variations in parenting across large populations have rarely been described. It also remains unclear which specific domains of parenting are important for which specific offspring developmental outcomes. This study describes different domains of early parenting behaviours and their genetic heritability, then determines the extent to which specific domains of parenting are associated with later offspring outcomes. Parenting behaviours (birth to 3 years) were extracted from self-reported questionnaires administered to 12,358 mothers from the UK-based birth cohort study, the Avon Longitudinal Stu

Polygenic propensity for educational attainment has been associated with higher education attendance, academic achievement and criminal offending in predominantly European samples; however, less is known about whether this polygenic propensity is associated with these outcomes among African Americans. Using an educational attainment polygenic score (EA PGS), the present study examined whether this score was associated with post-secondary education, academic achievement and criminal offending in an urban, African American sample. Three cohorts of participants (N = 1050; 43.9% male) were initial
