This study assessed the spatiotemporal variation in gastrointestinal helminth infections in farmed Piaractus mesopotamicus reared in floating cages in the Middle Paraná River (Argentina) and evaluated the relationship between parasite abundance and host body condition. We examined 209 fish during two farming seasons (2021/22-2022/23) in four intensive production systems (floating cages) and collected parasitological and morphometric data. Four helminth species were identified, belonging to the classes Trematoda (Dadaytrema oxycephala, Thometrema overstreeti), Nematoda (Procamallanus (Spirocama

Brazil stands out as the country with the most remarkable biological diversity in the world, underscoring the need for more effective public policies to conserve the environment and combat wildlife trafficking. Trafficked animals, often kept in captivity, are usually maintained under unsanitary conditions, favoring the development of diseases caused by gastrointestinal parasites. This cross-sectional study aimed to identify the primary endoparasites found in wild birds seized during trafficking operations as part of Integrated Preventive Inspections (IPIs) in the state of Bahia, Brazil. Parasites are integral components of biodiversity, shaping host populations, food web dynamics, and ecosystem stability. However, they are influenced by environmental conditions and face growing threats. Despite growing evidence of global declines in parasite populations, the impacts of contaminants on their fitness in freshwater ecosystems remains poorly understood. In this study we investigated how environmental variability, host traits, and pollutant exposure affect the fitness and infection patterns of acanthocephalan parasites in chub (Squalius cephalus). Using a mesocosm approach, we ass

Acanthocephalans, which are in the family Polymorphidae, are a globally distributed group of endoparasites whose adults reside in the intestines of fish-eating birds, waterfowl and marine mammals. Adults of Polymorphus brevis and Pseudocorynosoma constrictum are endoparasites of fish-eating birds (Ardeids) and waterfowl (Anatidae), respectively, and are considered one of the most abundant and widely distributed species of polymorphids in freshwater systems from the Nearctic and Neotropical regions of Mexico and the USA. In the present study, sequences of cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) f

Larval helminths often share intermediate hosts with other individuals of the same or different species. Competition for resources and/or conflicts over transmission routes are likely to influence both the association patterns between species and the life history strategies of each individual. Parasites sharing common intermediate hosts may have evolved ways to avoid or associate with other species depending on their definitive host. If not, individual parasites could develop alternative life history strategies in response to association with particular species. Three sympatric species of helm

Parasite infracommunities tend to be stochastic in nature, although environmental characteristics such as the type of water source in streams and host traits can have an effect on the biotic assemblages and by extension the parasite fauna. We examined the effect of water source and the rate of adult fish migration on the metazoan parasite infracommunities of conspecific juvenile brown trout, Salmo trutta L. among streams flowing into Lake Lucerne (Switzerland). Juvenile (1 to 2-year old) fish harboured higher parasite species richness in groundwater-fed than in surface water-fed streams, where

The objective of the present study was to describe the histology and histochemistry of the mucosal layer of the digestive tube of Piaractus brachypomus, and the histopathology associated with parasitism by Neoechinorhynchus sp. The digestive tube of P. brachypomus consists of three macroscopically distinct portions: short, rectilinear and elastic-walled ooesophagus, J-shaped siphon stomach and a long intestine with rectilinear and curved portions, defined by patterns of villi as foregut, midgut, and hindgut. Histological and histochemical differences were observed in the mucosal layers of the

Dentitruncus truttae (Acanthocephala, Palaeacanthocephala) is an intestinal parasite of fish that can cause extensive damage to the host digestive tract, yet little is known about its epidemiology and genetic variability. It is a member of the Illiosentidae family with a worldwide distribution restricted to parts of southeast Europe. Its usual host is brown trout (Salmo trutta), but we report here the first detection in the intestine of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). We examined the physiology of D. truttae-infected S. trutta and O. mykiss, seasonal and spatial variability of D. truttae

There is an increasing interest in parasites of marine mammals of Argentina. Here, we examined several poorly known cetaceans, i.e., 2 spectacled porpoises and 1 Burmeister's porpoise (Phocoenidae), and 1 Gray's beaked whale and 1 Cuvier's beaked whale (Ziphidae); we also updated the parasite information for 1 sperm whale (Physeteridae). These hosts strand only occasionally. We found Anisakis simplex s.l. in 2 spectacled porpoises and the Burmeister's porpoise, and recorded its distribution among the stomach chambers. Anisakis physeteris infected the sperm whale; Corynosoma cetaceum occurred i

Interactions between parasites and their hosts are shaped by ecological context, yet how anthropogenic pollution modifies these coevolved relationships remains poorly understood. Freshwater ecosystems are particularly exposed to chronic contamination by pesticides, which can affect host physiology, immunity, and behavior, as well as parasite development and transmission. Disentangling the independent and interactive effects of these stressors requires controlled experimental approaches. Here, 109 individuals of the freshwater fish Squalius cephalus were experimentally infected, each with 15 ac

Stranded seals are often infected with a broad range of parasites, although whether they are the cause of significant morbidity or an incidental finding is usually unclear. In this study we used stable isotope ratio analysis, a method frequently used to investigate food webs, to explore the extent to which common seal parasites feed directly on host tissue and fluids or absorb host-derived metabolites, which in turn may give an indication of their potential impact on the host's health. The trophic discrimination factor Δ15N for the nasal mite, Halarachne halichoeri, was mostly positive, rangin

Nine species of nematodes, unidentified larval nematodes, three species of trematodes, two species of acanthocephalans and a single species of chewing louse were collected from 1993 to 1995 from 25 introduced whooping cranes (Grus americana) in Florida (USA). In spite of a quarantine procedure involving anthelmintic therapy, three helminth parasites may have been introduced from captive populations. Other parasites acquired were similar to those found in a local congener, the Florida sandhill crane (Grus canadensis pratensis), or only occurred infrequently.

BACKGROUND: Several parasites with complex life-cycles induce phenotypic alterations in their intermediate hosts. According to the host manipulation hypothesis, such phenotypic alterations are supposed to increase the fitness of the parasite at the expense of that of its intermediate hosts through increasing the probability of transmission to next hosts. Although the phenomenon has received a large attention, the proximate factors modulating the occurrence and intensity of host manipulation remain poorly known. It has however, been suggested that the amount of energy reserves in the intermedia

BACKGROUND: Changes in the production of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), a 36 kd protein involved in protein synthesis, within intestinal epithelia can provide an early indication of deviations to normal functioning. Inhibition or stimulation of cell proliferation and PCNA can be determined through immunohistochemical staining of intestinal tissue. Changes in the expression of PCNA act as an early warning system of changes to the gut and this application has not been applied to the fields of aquatic parasitology and fish health. The current study set out to determine whether a popul

An extensive survey of helminth parasites in 1,316 freshwater fish representing 31 species from two aquatic ecosystems in southeastern Slovakia characterized by different level of environmental pollution was carried out. The helminth species diversity was compared between the Tisa River, heavily polluted with cyanides and heavy metals after a series of ecological disasters in 2000, and the less anthropogenically influenced Latorica River. A parasitological survey found 31 gastrointestinal helminths: Trematoda (11 species), Cestoda (14), Acanthocephala (3) and Nematoda (3). As many as 70 host-p
