Psychophysiologic disorders in children and adolescents.

Psychosomatic disorders in children and and adolescents is a topic that covers a wide variety of illnesses and one which is difficult if not impossible to define accurately. In general, chronic emotional states, often nonspecific, serve as strong contributors to the development of a physical illness. The particular illness is often dictated by varying degrees of biological predisposition in one physiological system-i.e., such a predisposition in the respiratory system may lead to asthma or in the gastrointestinal system to ulcerative colitis. In some cases the biological factor is large and th

RailTrack-DaViT: A Vision Transformer-Based Approach for Automated Railway Track Defect Detection.

Railway track defects pose significant safety risks and can lead to accidents, economic losses, and loss of life. Traditional manual inspection methods are either time-consuming, costly, or prone to human error. This paper proposes RailTrack-DaViT, a novel vision transformer-based approach for railway track defect classification. By leveraging the Dual Attention Vision Transformer (DaViT) architecture, RailTrack-DaViT effectively captures both global and local information, enabling accurate defect detection. The model is trained and evaluated on multiple datasets including rail, fastener and f

Bone Fracture Patterns and Distributions according to Trauma Energy.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the effect of injury mechanism and energy on fracture patterns and distributions. Also, it compares differences in bone fracture patterns based on injury mechanism, gender, and age. METHODS: Three thousand and sixty-six admitted patients with bone fractures were reviewed retrospectively, and the fractures were analyzed regarding age, gender, and mechanism of injury. Fractures were located in eleven bones. However, the forearm, hand, leg, and foot were considered one bone, and the fracture was then subclassified according to the anatomic position within each

Amblyopia and real-world visuomotor tasks.

A question of increasing interest to the basic science and clinical management communities during the past decade is whether children and adults with amblyopia and associated binocular visual abnormalities experience difficulties in executing real-world actions, to which vision normally makes an important functional contribution. Here we provide objective evidence that they do, by reviewing quantitative data from a number of studies comparing their performance with that of matched normally sighted subjects on a range of everyday visuomotor tasks. Because in real life, these tasks (grasping obj

[Post-traumatic secondary biliary cirrhosis].

CriticaLLy ill patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) are prone to various liver injuries resulting from multiple factors. However, in most cases, liver dysfunction is transient. In the following case report the authors describe the unusual occurrence of secondary biliary cirrhosis in a young patient, with no prior history of liver disease, who was admitted to the ICU after a severe motor vehicle accident. In recent years, several case series which describe the appearance of sclerosing cholangitis after hospitalization in the ICU have been reported. This clinical entity was describ

'Falling heads': investigating reflexive responses to head-neck perturbations.

BACKGROUND: Reflexive responses to head-neck perturbations affect the injury risk in many different situations ranging from sports-related impact to car accident scenarios. Although several experiments have been conducted to investigate these head-neck responses to various perturbations, it is still unclear why and how individuals react differently and what the implications of these different responses across subjects on the potential injuries might be. Therefore, we see a need for both experimental data and biophysically valid computational Human Body Models with bio-inspired muscle control s

Psychiatric aspects of replantation surgery.

The surgical literature on replant patients was reviewed and reports of psychiatric complications were noted. Data for this study were obtained from semistructured psychiatric interviews administered to 30 replant patients within a few days of admission. In addition, 24 of the patients received two or more follow-up interviews. Thirty-three percent of the patients showed evidence of preaccident psychopathology; 20% suffered from a substance use disorder. Fifty percent of the patients reported a stressful life event within the year antedating the accident. Sixty percent of the patients were ass

Prone ventilation in a patient with severe ARDS having a floating sternum.

Prone ventilation is used to manage patients with refractory hypoxia in the critical care unit. Complex chest trauma and chest drains have been a considered relative contraindication to prone ventilation. To the best of our knowledge, it is hitherto unreported in patients having traumatic floating sternum and acute respiratory distress. We present a brief case report of a patient with floating sternum (complete disruption of sternum) managed successfully by prone position ventilation.

Age Effects in Facial Fracture Trauma: Disparities in Multisystem Injuries in Non-Fall-Related Trauma.

Background and objective Facial fractures represent a growing concern among an aging population prone to falls. In light of this, this study aimed to investigate differential facial fracture patterns and outcomes based on age effects. Determining the differences between the severity and type of facial fractures in populations of different ages will help guide clinical decision-making when managing patients with facial fractures. Methods This was a single-center study involving trauma registry data, from July 1, 2016, to January 31, 2022. The inclusion criteria were based on the International C

Treatment Outcome of Patellar Fractures Across Two Tertiary Centers: A Five-Year Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the patella, though not so common, are prone to complications. Injuries to the patella often disrupts the extensor mechanism of the knee and increases the likelihood of patella-femoral joint incongruence. The aim of this study was to determine the outcome of treatment of patella fracture in two tertiary health institutions in South-south Nigeria. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted among patients who had patella fractures over a five-year period, using hospital records. The data obtained were analyzed and formed into tables, charts and figures

In vitro and in vivo evaluation of poly-3-hydroxybutyric acid-sodium alginate as a core-shell nanofibrous matrix with arginine and bacitracin-nanoclay complex for dermal reconstruction of excision wound.

The protective layer of the body, the skin is often prone to damage due to several factors like trauma, accidents, stress and hazardous exposure. This requires the skin to regenerate itself which is a finely regulated process. To hasten the process and prevent further damage, the dressing material is of prime importance. Herein, we fabricated poly-3-hydroxybutyric acid (P)-sodium alginate (S)-(core-shell) nanofibrous matrix as protective scaffold for the skin tissue regeneration in excision wound model. The arginine (A) and layered double hydroxides-bacitracin (LB) were incorporated into the c

[Factors influencing the performance of medical teams in the early assessment of exposure to radiation--in accident or man-made radiological disasters].

"RadioLogical events" are the general term used to describe various scenarios that involve radiological and nuclear mishaps. These may occur in different settings such as in a nuclear plant, during transportation of isotopes, in a medical or industrial venue, as a result of an accident, natural disaster or as a means of terror or war. Radiological events carry dire medical consequences and are therefore of great concern to both the public and the authorities. The recent disaster in Japan brought the issue of the safety of nuclear pLants to the civil populations residing around them to the publ

Moyamoya-like vasculopathy and Seckel syndrome: just a coincidence?

INTRODUCTION: Seckel syndrome (SS) and other microcephalic primordial dwarfisms (MPDs) are a group of autosomal recessive disorders characterized by prenatal and postnatal growth retardation, microcephaly, and distinct facial dysmorphic features. There are an increasing number of reports in the literature linking MPDs with cerebrovascular anomalies, including intracranial aneurysms and moyamoya. CASE REPORT: An 18-year-old female patient with SS and mental retardation was referred for spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage. At the age of 3 years, she had suffered multifocal ischemic cerebrovascu

Acute behavioral effects of exposure to some organic solvents -psychophysiological aspects.

Acute low-level exposure to organic solvent vapours may result in prenarcotic states of CNS-depression, often characterized by behavioral dysfunction. Behavioral findings from experimental acute human exposures to toluene, trichloroethylene (TCE), and methylene chloride (MC) are covered in this review. Perceptual measures (e.g. critical flicker fusion = CFF), measures of sustained attention (vigilance), measures of psychomotor performance (as e.g. reaction time, motor speed, coordination) as well as EEG-measures (sensory evoked potentials) are used to illustrate the main effects from such stud

Use of the medial femoral condyle vascularized bone flap in traumatic avascular necrosis of the navicular: a case report.

The medial femoral condyle vascularized bone flap has a high success rate in published literature regarding its use in nonunions and avascular necrosis of the upper and lower extremities. It is reported to have minimal donor site morbidity and the ability to provide structural support and torsional strength to load-bearing areas. The flap has found particular success in the treatment of scaphoid nonunions. The tarsal navicular, similar to the scaphoid, is largely articular cancellous bone with little surface area for vascular inflow. These anatomic features make the navicular prone to nonunion

[Correlations between viral serology and different clinical characteristics in patients with lupus nephropathy].

BACKGROUND: Relationships between viral infections and autoimmune diseases are complex and debated: on the one hand, patients with LES are particularly prone to develop viral infections, on the other, some virus are thought to play a role both in triggering the onset of the immunologic disease and in conferring peculiar clinical features to flare-ups. METHODS: This study has drawn an epidemiologic profile of viral pathology from Epstein Barr virus, Parvovirus B 19 and Cytomegalovirus in 60 patients with LES followed-up for a period ranging from 13 to 340 months (on average 158 months). Presentation and management outcome of foot drop with tibialis posterior tendon transfer.

BACKGROUND: Foot drop causes considerable disability. The ankle-dorsiflexion is either weak or lost completely. Additionally, the ankle eversion and toe extensions are also impaired. This results in a high steppage gait while walking. Overall, the gait is awkward; there is greater energy consumption; increased proneness to sustain injury of the forefoot; and more frequent falling during walking. AIM: To document the clinical and epidemiological profile of foot drop patients in our population and evaluate the outcome of tibialis posterior (TP) tendon transfer for restoring the lost dorsiflexio
