There is unmet contraceptive need among Haitian immigrants and Haitian-American women (Haitian women). The study explored associations of three measures of acculturation with contraceptive/reproductive health history among Haitian women residing in the Little Haiti community of Miami. This was a cross-sectional, exploratory study among 57 Haitian women. We conducted descriptive univariate analyses, then bivariate analyses to investigate the association of acculturation with reproductive health risk behavior including contraceptive use, tampon use, and parity, as well as interest in a female-in

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is a national epidemic that disproportionately affects Hispanic children. Evidence suggests that increased acculturation among this population adversely affects diet and other healthy lifestyle characteristics, leading to higher rates of overweight and obesity. Healthy lifestyle characteristics must be understood in order to prevent or decrease overweight and obesity among Hispanic children.
METHODS: Using the School Physical Activity and Nutrition (SPAN) study, we examined cross-sectional data on healthy lifestyle characteristics collected in Texas public school

BACKGROUND: Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is one of the most widespread liver diseases in the world and disproportionately affects Asian Americans, who are further impacted by the lower quality of life imposed by the infection. Limited English proficiency (LEP) and acculturative stress play an important role in the study of patients with CHB, but the interrelationships of LEP, acculturative stress, and health outcomes are not well studied in this population. This study aims to explore how acculturative stress mediates the relationship between LEP and health outcomes among Korean American patients

BACKGROUND: Social isolation and loneliness are increasingly recognized as public health concerns for aging populations, yet the experiences of older Asian Indian immigrants in the United States (US) remain understudied. This qualitative study explored how immigration, acculturation, and changes in social networks shape isolation, loneliness, and resilience among older Asian Indian immigrants.
METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 29 Asian Indian immigrants aged 50 years and older in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Participants were recruited through purposive sampling with suppor

International students navigate a complex ecosystem influenced by various interrelated factors such as academic settings, family influences, social supports, and the process of cultural adjustment. While universities provide institutional support, the direct or indirect effect of family and social support network in the adaptation process and mental wellbeing is paramount. The interplay of acculturative stress, loneliness, perceived social support, and depression among international students warrants extensive study due to its profound impact on mental health and academic outcomes. This resear

BACKGROUND: South Asians (SA) represent the fastest growing US immigrant group, and previous studies have indicated that they face disproportionately high burden of cardiometabolic disease. Cardiometabolic disease manifests as a syndemic or synergistic epidemic encompassing multiple disease clusters influenced by biological, social, and psychological factors stemming from the acculturative process. This process may exacerbate morbidity within immigrant subgroups. Our aim was to identify cardiometabolic risk profiles among SA using indicators of acculturation.
METHODS: We conducted a latent cl

BACKGROUND: The available limited literature and Centers for Disease Control data suggest that human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination acceptance is lower among Asian Indians than the general population in the United States.
PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of health beliefs, subjective norms, acculturation, and demographics on HPV vaccination acceptance among Asian Indian parents.
METHODOLOGY: Using a comparative descriptive cross-sectional study design, immigrant and first-generation Asian Indian parents of 9- to 16-year-old children were recruited ( N = 171).

Some researchers posit that the lower prevalence of asthma among those of Mexican descent may result from an under-diagnosis and recommend a critical appraisal of factors related to race/ethnicity, like acculturation, and its influence on asthma status. Survey data were analyzed using multinomial logistic regression to examine the association of child's asthma status (no wheezing/no asthma symptoms, possible undiagnosed and diagnosed asthma) with measures of acculturation among Hispanic students (n = 1095). In this population, the prevalence of diagnosed asthma (15%) was higher than both natio

BACKGROUND: We compared the distribution of breast cancer reproductive and hormonal risk factors by level of acculturation and country of residence in women of Mexican descent.
METHODS: To compare the distribution of breast cancer reproductive and hormonal risk factors by level of acculturation and country of residence in women of Mexican descent, taking into account level of education, we analyzed data on 581 Mexican and 620 Mexican American (MA) women with a history of invasive breast cancer from the Ella Binational Breast Cancer Study. BACKGROUND: The sustainability of iconic textile enterprises depends on their ability to transform internal capabilities into enduring competitive advantage. Although value creation, product innovation, and creativity are recognized as key drivers of performance, limited empirical evidence explains how these capabilities translate into long-term sustainability in culturally embedded industries. This study examines the mediating role of acculturative isolating product advantage (AAC) in the Samarinda woven sarong industry, a traditional textile sector characterized by strong cultural identity a

OBJECTIVES: Traditional risk factors for cognitive impairment in non-Latino White adults do not manifest the same level of risk in Latinos. Despite research investigating culturally relevant factors, including acculturation, as it relates to Latino cognition, few studies have incorporated contextual factors for a more wholistic approach. We investigated acculturation-related factors within the context of socioenvironmental factors to study cognition in 8,476 self-identified Hispanic/Latino adults 45 years and older participating in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos baseline

AIMS: This study investigated the role of perceived social norms and acculturation orientations in shaping migrants' willingness to seek mental health care. Specifically, we examined perceptions of help-seeking norms, presumed approval by family and friends, and the moderating role of migrants' acculturation orientations.
METHODS: The study used a preregistered design with a sample of 2768 people with a migrant background from six countries (Afghanistan, Eritrea, Lithuania, Poland, Syria, and Ukraine). Participants completed a web-based survey assessing their willingness to seek help, perceiv

OBJECTIVE: Cultural stress potently predicts mental health inequities, such as anxiety, among adult and adolescent immigrants in the United States. However, less work has focused on preadolescence, a period marked by neurodevelopmental and psychosocial changes that can exacerbate anxiety symptoms. Latina girls, who exhibit heightened levels of untreated anxiety, may be at elevated risk. The present study tests whether cultural stress predicts anxiety symptoms in Latina girls and their caregivers.
METHOD: The primary caregivers of 161 predominantly Mexican-identifying Latina girls (Mage = 10.7

OBJECTIVES: The current study investigates acculturation in a group of teenagers and young adults who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) and who were raised in an age of early identification, early intervention, advanced audiologic technology, and inclusive education.
DESIGN: The Deaf Acculturation Scale ( Maxwell-McCaw & Zea 2011 ) was administered via online survey to 106 teenagers and young adults (mean ages = 16.87 and 24.65 years, respectively). All participants were alumni of an early childhood program for children who are DHH in the United States learning listening and spoken language s

As Latino children acculturate to the United States, they are at risk for excess weight gain. Existing literature suggests that higher levels of food insecurity may predict obesity, but the role of acculturation is not well understood. Latino children ages 2-17 of both immigrant and non-immigrant parents (n = 63) were recruited from a primary care clinic serving low income families. Child anthropometric measures, and parent acculturation and food insecurity measures were collected via self-administered questionnaires. Over 63% of the patients were either overweight or obese according to criter

INTRODUCTION: The Double Jeopardy Hypothesis posits that sexual minority people of color may have a greater risk of substance use because of dealing with heterosexism and racism. We sought to test this hypothesis by examining whether appraisal of intersectional forms of discrimination predict greater cigarette dependence and whether acculturation attenuates that relationship among Latinx sexual minority men (SMM) who smoke.
METHODS: Participants were 258 Latinx SMM who identified as current smokers recruited via Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk). OLS regressions tested (1) the relationship betwe

This study examines the complex interplay of genetic and environmental interactions that shape chronic illness risk. Evidence is mounting for the role of genetic expression and the immune response in the pathogenesis of chronic disease. In the Rio Grande Valley of south Texas, where 90% of the population is Mexican American, chronic illnesses (including obesity, diabetes, nonalcoholic liver disease, and depression) are reaching epidemic proportions. This study leverages an ongoing family study of the genetic determinants of risk for obesity, diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and depressi

BACKGROUND: Among Latinos, greater acculturation to the United States (US) is associated with risk of obesity and obesity-related comorbidities. Less is known about the associations between acculturation and obesity-related modifiable risk factors, such as diet quality and physical activity (PA) among Latina breast cancer survivors.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore associations between acculturation and weight status, diet quality, and PA among Latina breast cancer survivors.
DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional secondary analysis of baseline data on demographic and clinical char

BACKGROUND: Skin cancer prevention interventions that target the growing number of U.S. Hispanics are lacking. The current study examined the prevalence and correlates of sun protection and exposure behaviors (i.e., sunscreen use, shade seeking, use of sun protective clothing, and sunburns) among U.S. Hispanics with sun sensitive skin, with a focus on potential differences according to acculturation and Hispanic origin.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 1676 Hispanic adults who reported having sun sensitive skin (i.e., they would experience a sunburn if they went out in the sun for one hour wi
