Acetabularia rhodopsins are the first microbial rhodopsins discovered in a marine plant organism, Acetabularia acetabulum. Previously, we expressed Acetabularia rhodopsin II (ARII) by a cell-free system from one of two opsin genes in A. acetabulum cDNA and showed that ARII is a light-driven proton pump [Wada, T., et al. (2011) J. Mol. Biol. 411, 986-998]. In this study, the photochemistry of ARII was examined using the flash-photolysis technique, and data were analyzed using a sequential irreversible model. Five photochemically defined intermediates (P(i)) were sufficient to simulate the data.

BACKGROUND: Although the benefits of acute stabilization of long bone fractures are recognized, the role of early fixation of unstable pelvis and acetabular fractures is not well-defined. The purpose of this study was to review complications and hospital course of patients treated surgically for pelvis and acetabulum fractures. We hypothesized that early definitive fixation would reduce morbidity and decrease length of stay.
METHODS: Six hundred forty-five patients were treated surgically at a level I trauma center for unstable fractures of the pelvic ring (n = 251), acetabulum (n = 359), or

Most surgical treatment options for metastatic acetabular lesions involve variants of total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, these are technically complex reconstructions performed in very frail patients, and previous reports indicate complications such as dislocation, deep infection, aseptic loosening, and intraoperative death. A 73-year-old man presented to the emergency department at our hospital with right hip pain following a fall. He had undergone nephrectomy for the treatment of right kidney cancer at the age of 68 years. Four years after the nephrectomy, multiple lung metastases, pelvi

INTRODUCTION: Anatomical variations of the sciatic nerve are of significant clinical importance due to their implications in hip surgery, regional anesthesia, and the evaluation of sciatic neuropathies. The most widely accepted description of sciatic nerve-piriformis muscle relationships is the Beaton and Anson classification, which encompasses six recognized patterns. However, rare anatomical variants exist that do not conform to this classification and may predispose patients to nerve injury or diagnostic challenges.
CASE REPORT: We report a rare, unclassified anatomical variation of the sc

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic acetabular fractures in the postoperative period are a relatively rare complication of total hip arthroplasty (THA). There are limited data describing this patient population, their treatment, and outcomes.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted using a prospectively gathered database of 3,595 revision THA procedures from 1990 to 2024. Of these, 54 periprosthetic acetabular fractures were identified. The review was performed to determine patient demographics, implant survivorship, mortality, and functional outcomes.
RESULTS: A total of 54 periprosthetic frac

INTRODUCTION: Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is a standard treatment for pelvic and acetabular fractures, but it is associated with great trauma and a high incidence of complications. The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate whether laparoscopy can be used as an alternative to standard ORIF in the treatment of pelvic and acetabular fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 15 patients with pelvic and acetabular fractures who underwent laparoscopy. The surgical time, intraoperative blood loss, and surgery-related complications of all the patients were

BACKGROUND: The morphology of coxa profunda remains inadequately understood. However, knowledge about the characteristics of the acetabulum in coxa profunda can help to predict pelvic morphology in three dimensions based on radiographic findings, as well as help to diagnose and predict hip pathologies. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between the morphological characteristics of the pelvis and coxa profunda.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis including women who had undergone unilateral total hip arthroplasty. Only those with normal hip joint morphology

CASE: We report the case of a patient who sustained a left posterior wall acetabular fracture with an ipsilateral persistent sciatic artery (PSA). The PSA was diagnosed preoperatively on lower extremity computed tomography angiogram. He was treated with open reduction internal fixation through a Kocher-Langenbeck approach. The PSA and sciatic nerve were identified and protected throughout the case. There were no neurovascular complications.
CONCLUSION: PSA in the setting of posterior wall acetabulum fractures has not been reported previously. Orthopaedic surgeons who treat these injuries shou

BACKGROUND: Since the original description by Letournel in 1961, the ilioinguinal approach has remained the predominant approach for anterior acetabular fixation. However, modifications of the original abdominal approach described by Stoppa have made another option available for reduction and fixation of pelvic and acetabular fractures.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We evaluated our results in patients with acetabulum fractures with the modified Stoppa approach in terms of (1) hip function as measured by the Merle d'Aubigne hip score; (2) complications; and (3) quality of fracture reduction and percent

A common situation presenting to the orthopaedic surgeon today is a worn acetabular liner with substantial acetabular and pelvic osteolysis. The surgeon has many options for dealing with osteolytic defects. These include allograft, calcium based substitutes, demineralised bone matrix, or combinations of these options with or without addition of platelet rich plasma. To date there are no clinical studies to determine the efficacy of using bone-stimulating materials in osteolytic defects at the time of revision surgery and there are surprisingly few studies demonstrating the clinical efficacy of

Acetabular osteophytes are common during total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, the fate and role of superolateral osteophytes of the acetabulum after THA remain unclear. The present study reviewed a series of radiographic changes in the osteophytes on the superolateral region of the acetabulum in 35 hips. The mean follow-up period was 42.2months. The results revealed that the osteophytes that were not in contact with the superolateral edge of acetabular cup were gradually absorbed after THA. In contrast, the osteophytes that were in contact with the superolateral edge of the acetabular cup un

Periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) is a surgical procedure to correct acetabular orientation in developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). It changes the position of the acetabulum to increase femoral head coverage and distribute the contact pressure over the cartilage surface. The success of PAO depends significantly on the surgeon's experience. Using computed tomography data from patients with DDH, we developed a 3D finite element (FE) model to investigate the optimal position of the acetabulum following PAO. A virtual PAO was performed with the acetabulum rotated in increments from the original

We examined patients affected by a posterior wall fracture of the acetabulum treated with a minimally invasive posterior approach (from 12 to 18 cm). During 2004-2006 19 patients were treated by this approach. 4 patients had a combined surgery by the ileo-inguinal approach. Fracture fixation was performed using reconstruction plates and screws. All the patients were studied with typical X-rays projection for pelvis and iliac oblique view and obturator oblique view (Judet view) and CT scan with 3D reconstruction. After 3 months a CT scan was performed on about 30% of our patients, which demonst
