This study examines the effects of Taenia crassiceps cysticerci on the viability of a human T lymphocyte cell line (Jurkat). Both budding and non-budding T. crassiceps metacestodes were cultured over 24 and 48 h in the presence of Jurkat cells. Out of 23 symptomatic cases 21 specimens were positive for T. vaginalis by one or more methods. 21 were positive by PCR (91.3%) and 17 (72.9%) by culture, 14 (60.8%) by Acridine orange (AO) stain and 13 (56.5%) by wet mount microscopy. We describe the synthesis of Bodipy 558/568-modified acetazolamide, a fluorescent inhibitor of carbonic anhydrase and its use to localize the enzyme in living cells.
