Learning to adapt: Dynamics of readaptation to geometrical distortions.

The visual system can adapt to optical blur, whereby the adapted image is perceived as sharp. Here we show that adaptation reduces blur-induced biases in shape perception, with repeated adaptations (perceptual learning), leading to unbiased perception upon re-exposure to blur. Observers wore a cylindrical lens of +1.00 D on one eye, thus simulating monocular astigmatism. The other eye was either masked with a translucent blurred lens (monocular) or unmasked (dichoptic). Adaptation was tested in several repeated sessions with a proximity-grouping task, using horizontally or vertically arranged

[Night visual function of glaucoma patients with good photopic vision].

PURPOSE: To measure night visual function of glaucoma patients with good photopic vision. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Patients aged 30-59 years who were diagnosed with glaucoma in the outpatient clinic of Nara Medical University, and showed a corrected visual acuity of > or = 1.0 in both eyes. The patients were classified using static threshold perimetry with a Humphrey field analyzer into two groups, with a mean deviation of -6 dB or better (early-stage glaucoma group) or a mean deviation worse than -6dB (intermediate/late-stage glaucoma group), and night visual function was measured. In addition,

Single-cell profiling reveals Müller glia coordinate retinal intercellular communication during light/dark adaptation via thyroid hormone signaling.

Light adaptation enables the vertebrate visual system to operate over a wide range of ambient illumination. Regulation of phototransduction in photoreceptors is considered a major mechanism underlying light adaptation. However, various types of neurons and glial cells exist in the retina, and whether and how all retinal cells interact to adapt to light/dark conditions at the cellular and molecular levels requires systematic investigation. Therefore, we utilized single-cell RNA sequencing to dissect retinal cell-type-specific transcriptomes during light/dark adaptation in mice. The results demo

Influence of rod adaptation upon cone responses to light offset in humans: II. Results in an observer with exaggerated suppressive rod-cone interaction.

In normal observers, sensitivity of cones to rapid sinusoidal flicker decreases by about 0.7 log units as rods progressively dark adapt. However, Arden and Hogg (1985) described a night-vision disorder characterized by normal rod sensitivity but exaggerated suppressive rod-cone interaction (SRCI). We refer to this condition as the exaggerated SRCI syndrome (ESS). The present paper examines the influence of rod-adaptation upon cone-mediated responses to light onset and offset in an observer with ESS. Under all conditions of adaptation examined, sensitivity of cones to rapid-on waveforms is indi

Phenotypic characterization of complete CSNB in the inbred research beagle: how common is CSNB in research and companion dogs?

PURPOSE: Although congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) has been described in a Japanese beagle dog research colony, certain clinical correlates with human CSNB have not yet been described, nor has an estimate of frequency of the condition been made in inbred and outbred beagle populations. METHODS: A beagle with CSNB obtained from a commercial research dog supplier in the USA and matched control dogs (n = 3) underwent examination, refraction, ocular imaging, assessment of visual navigation ability and detailed electroretinography (ERG). Retrospective review of ERGs in two independent

Elevated free calcium levels in the subretinal space elevate the absolute dark-adapted threshold in hypopigmented mice.

Abundant evidence spanning 25 years demonstrates that hypopigmentation is associated with sensory abnormalities manifested most clearly as elevated absolute dark-adapted thresholds in hypopigmented mice. Here we show that when ocular melanin is increased in the himalayan mouse via alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) injections, dark-adapted thresholds drop in proportion to the change in ocular melanin. We further measured free calcium concentration with calcium-sensitive microelectrodes in both albino and black mouse retinal eyecups in living subjects. The recordings were done in

[Surgical treatment of blepharoptosis in patients with mitochondrial myopathies. Apropos of 4 cases].

The authors briefly describe the commonest forms of mitochondrial myopathies particularly those associated with disorders of ocular motility. They report their series of four patients suffering from ptosis of the eyelid caused by mitochondrial myopathies. The ptosis was corrected surgically in all cases by means of Müller's muscle adaptation technique. The authors discuss their results and the indication for this technique.

Gestational ocular microvascular changes in healthy pregnancy: a longitudinal SS-OCTA study.

This prospective longitudinal study investigated trimester-specific ocular microvascular changes in healthy pregnancy using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA).Sixty pregnant women underwent SS-OCTA imaging during early (< 14 weeks), mid- (14–27 weeks), and late pregnancy (> 27 weeks). The study demonstrated: (1) A unique V-shaped trajectory in choroidal vessel density (CVD), with initial decline (86.91 ± 2.01% to 85.77 ± 2.87%, P < 0.001) followed by partial recovery in late pregnancy (85.87 ± 2.82%, P < 0.001 vs. mid-trimester), contrasting with progressive retina

Comparison of Asymmetry between Perceptual, Ocular, and Postural Vestibular Screening Tests.

BACKGROUND: A better understanding of how vestibular asymmetry manifests across tests is important due to its potential implications for balance dysfunction, motion sickness susceptibility, and adaptation to new environments. OBJECTIVE: We report the results of multiple tests for vestibular asymmetry in 32 healthy participants. METHODS: Asymmetry was measured using perceptual reports during unilateral centrifugation, oculomotor responses during visual alignment tasks, vestibulo-ocular reflex gain during head impulse tests, and body rotation during stepping tests. RESULTS: A significant corr

Dynamic performance of accommodating intraocular lenses in a negative feedback control system: a simulation-based study.

A dynamic model of ocular accommodation is used to simulate the stability and dynamic performance of accommodating intraocular lenses (A-IOLs) that replace the hardened natural ocular lens that is unable to change focus. Accommodation simulations of an older eye with A-IOL materials having biomechanical properties of a younger eye illustrate overshoots and oscillations resulting from decreased visco-elasticity of the A-IOL. Stable dynamics of an A-IOL are restored by adaptation of phasic and tonic neural-control properties of accommodation. Simulations indicate that neural control must be reca

Physiological cerebrospinal fluid interactions between brain and eye structures are altered after long-duration spaceflight.

Long-duration spaceflight represents an extreme challenge, triggering adaptive responses including spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome, characterized by diminished visual acuity and ocular changes, which is a significant health risk for Mars missions. Concurrently, spacefarers experience brain adaptations, including ventricular expansion and CSF redistribution; however, the integrative physiological mechanisms linking these brain-eye responses remain unestablished. We applied automated morphometric analysis to investigate brain-eye relationships using high-resolution MRI data from ter

Neuromuscular plasticity and rehabilitation of the ocular near response.

The near response is composed of cross-coupled interactions between convergence and other distance-related oculomotor responses including accommodation, vertical vergence, and cyclovergence. The cross-coupling interactions are analogous to the body postural reflexes that maintain balance. Near-response couplings guide involuntary motor responses during voluntary shifts of distance and direction of gaze without feedback from defocus or retinal-image disparity. They optimize the disparity stimulus for stereoscopic depth perception and can be modified by optically induced sensory demands placed o

Animal Models of Ocular Tuberculosis: Implications for Diagnosis and Treatment.

The pathogenesis of ocular tuberculosis (TB) has remained unclear due to the challenges of performing mechanistic studies on clinical samples. Animal models have the potential to bridge these gaps by providing information about ocular dissemination and localization of mycobacteria, innate and adaptive immune response, and granuloma formation in the eye. Here, we critically review various animal models of ocular TB from the early 20th century to date and derive novel insights into pathogenesis of ocular TB that have direct implications on the diagnosis and treatment of this disease. Future dire

Adaptive changes in the angular VOR: duration of gain changes and lack of effect of nodulo-uvulectomy.

Alterations in the gain of the vertical angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) are dependent on the head position in which the gain changes were produced. We determined how long gravity-dependent gain changes last in monkeys after four hours of adaptation, and whether the adaptation is mediated through the nodulus and uvula of the vestibulocerebellum. Vertical VOR gains were adaptively modified by rotation about an interaural axis, in phase or out of phase with the visual surround. Vertical VOR gains were modified with the animals in one of three orientations: upright, left-side down, or right-

The role of eye-specific attention in ocular dominance plasticity.

It is well known how selective attention biases information processing in real time, but few work investigates the aftereffects of prolonged attention, let alone the underlying neural mechanisms. To examine perceptual aftereffect after prolonged attention to a monocular pathway, movie images played normally were presented to normal adult's one eye (attended eye), while movie images of the same episode but played backwards were presented to the opposite eye (unattended eye). One hour of watching this dichoptic movie caused a shift of perceptual ocular dominance towards the unattended eye. Inter

Vergence Adaptation to Short-Duration Stimuli in Early Childhood.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether nonstrabismic typically developing young children are capable of exhibiting vergence adaptation. METHODS: Fifteen adults (19.5-35.8 years) and 34 children (2.5-7.3 years) provided usable data. None wore habitual refractive correction. Eye position and accommodation were recorded using Purkinje image eye tracking and eccentric photorefraction (MCS PowerRefractor). Vergence was measured in three conditions while the participant viewed naturalistic targets at 33 cm. Viewing was monocular for at least 60 seconds and then binocular for either 5 seconds (5-second con

Presumed isotretinoin-induced extraocular myopathy.

Isotretinoin a synthetic analogue of vitamin A is primarily used for cystic acne not responding to conventional treatment. Several ocular side effects including blurring of vision, decreased dark adaptation, corneal opacities and meibomian gland atrophy have been reported with prolonged use of isotretinoin. There have been reports of muscular damage caused by isotretinoin. Extra ocular myopathy as an adverse effect of long term used of isotretinoin has never been mentioned in literature. We report a case of a young male who presented to us with complaints of diplopia after using isotretinoin f
