Real-Time microcalcification detection with SAAR algorithm.

BackgroundDetecting breast cancer, especially identifying microcalcifications in mammograms, is challenging due to the need for high sensitivity and efficient processing. This study presents a novel algorithm, Sigmoidal Slope Analysis and Aspect Ratio Evaluation (SAAR), designed for real-time application on edge devices. By employing a multi-step adaptive process with sigmoidal functions, SAAR enhances intensity contrast and prioritizes regions of interest, enabling fast, accurate detection of microcalcifications.ObjectiveThis study aims to develop and validate an efficient, edge-device-compat

An Adaptive Multi-Scale Manifold Embedding Preprocessing Framework for High-Dimensional Data Visualization.

To improve the robustness of neighborhood construction and the separation of intra-cluster and inter-cluster structures in high-dimensional visualization, this paper proposes Adaptive Multi-Scale Manifold Embedding (AMSME), an ordinal distance based preprocessing framework for existing manifold embedding algorithms. The framework introduces ordinal distance to replace traditional Euclidean distances. Under an idealized high-dimensional Gaussian setting, our analysis shows that ordinal distance can improve the stability of neighborhood ordering between homogeneous and heterogeneous samples, the

Comparison of EWMA, MA, and MQ Under a Unified PBRTQC Framework for Thyroid and Coagulation Tests.

Background: Patient-based real-time quality control (PBRTQC) enables continuous analytical monitoring using routine patient results; however, the performance of classical statistical process control (SPC) algorithms varies across analytes, and standardized evaluation and optimization strategies remain limited. To address this gap, this study compared three SPC algorithms-moving average (MA), moving quantile (MQ), and exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA)-within a unified preprocessing framework and proposed a composite performance metric for parameter optimization. Methods: Routine pati

Adaptive Allocation of Monte Carlo Samples for Efficient, Multifidelity Computational Screening of Metal-Organic Frameworks.

For applications in gas sensing, purification, and capture, we often wish to search a large set of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for the top-K in terms of their Henry coefficients for an adsorbate. A molecular simulation to predict the Henry coefficient of a MOF constitutes a Monte Carlo integration where each sample consists of inserting an adsorbate in the MOF at a random position, orientation, and configuration, then calculating the MOF-adsorbate interaction energy. Our idea is to leverage top-K arm identification algorithms, developed for the multi-armed bandit problem in reinforcement l

Efficacy of Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Using Automated Dynamic Optimization and Left Ventricular-only Pacing.

BACKGROUND: Although device-based optimization has been developed to overcome the limitations of conventional optimization methods in cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT), few real-world data supports the results of clinical trials that showed the efficacy of automatic optimization algorithms. We investigated whether CRT using the adaptive CRT algorithm is comparable to non-adaptive biventricular (BiV) pacing optimized with electrocardiogram or echocardiography-based methods. METHODS: Consecutive 155 CRT patients were categorized into 3 groups according to the optimization methods: non-ada

Efficacy of a Device-Based Continuous Optimization Algorithm for Patients With Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is less effective in patients with mildly wide QRS or non-left bundle branch block (non-LBBB). A new algorithm of every minute's optimization (adaptive CRT: aCRT algorithm) is effective in patients with CRT devices. This study investigated the clinical effect of the aCRT algorithm, especially in mildly wide QRS (120≤QRS<150 ms) or non-LBBB patients receiving CRT. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study included 104 CRT patients (48 patients using the aCRT algorithm [adaptive group] and 56 patients not using the aCRT algorithm [non-adaptive group]).

Timing of a just-in-time intervention to reduce alcohol consumption: A simulation approach to optimize decision rules.

The effectiveness of a just-in-time adaptive intervention relies on accurate algorithms (i.e., decision rules), that determine when and how interventions should be administered. Yet, so far, there is a lack of empirical investigations that evaluate the performance of decision rules. Simulation can be a useful tool to evaluate and refine a range of decision rules prior to implementing just-in-time adaptive interventions in real-world settings. In this study, we evaluate the performance of various decision rules using both an existing data set and a simulated data set that includes measures of c

Multi-agent meta-reinforcement learning based on contrastive predictive coding-For rapid adaptive traffic control after emergencies.

Emergency signal control has to clear emergency vehicles through intersections without creating excessive delay for ordinary traffic. Many existing controllers still depend on manually designed traffic features, and unfamiliar emergency patterns often require additional training before the control policy can be adjusted reliably. For this setting, a multi-agent meta-reinforcement learning framework is developed using Contrastive Predictive Coding (CPC) for traffic state representation. CPC compresses high-dimensional traffic sequences into compact representations that are subsequently used by

RLASON-CDR: a reinforcement learning-driven adaptive synergistic optimization network for cancer drug response prediction.

Cancer drug response (CDR) prediction is crucial for advancing precision medicine. Advanced computational predictors extracted CDR patterns from multimodal features of cell lines and drugs under the guidance of known CDRs. However, most existing methods struggle to extract biologically meaningful and generalizable CDR representations due to insufficient semantic alignment among the multimodal features. In addition, semantic inconsistencies between multimodal and topological features further hinder the predictive accuracy of CDRs. To address the challenges, a novel Reinforcement Learning-driven

Upper and Lower-Limb Motor Decoding for Adaptive and Generalized Neural Rehabilitation.

Decoding motor intentions from electromyographic (EMG) signals holds transformative potential for neurorehabilitation and assistive technologies, yet existing approaches remain fundamentally constrained by limb-specific architectures, poor generalization across individuals and recording sessions, and an unsustainable dependence on large volumes of labeled data. Here we present a unified cross-limb framework that, for the first time, systematically addresses both upper- and lower-limb motor decoding within a single, consistent learning paradigm. The framework operates through two complementary

Detection of cardiac tachyarrhythmias in implantable devices.

Implantable devices such as pacemakers and implantable cardioverter/defibrillators (ICDs) use algorithms to sense cardiac depolarizations and to detect tachyarrhythmias by analysis of timing and morphology of sensed events. The purpose of tachyarrhythmia detection in these devices is to guide electrical therapies delivered by the pacemaker or ICD and/or to provide clinical diagnostics for medical management of patients. Unlike electrocardiographic analysis methods that rely on postanalysis of recorded signals using desktop computers, implantable devices must make detection decisions on a beat-

Technique for preprocessing of digital mammogram.

Digital mammogram has emerged as the most popular screening technique for early detection of breast cancer and other abnormalities in human breast tissue. It provides us opportunities to develop algorithms for computer aided detection (CAD). In this paper we have proposed three distinct steps. The initial step involves contrast enhancement by using the contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE) technique. Then define the rectangle to isolate the pectoral muscle from the region of interest (ROI) and finally suppress the pectoral muscle using our proposed modified seeded region gro

Detecting Toe-Off and Initial Contact in Real-Time With Self-Adapting Thresholds.

This research introduces an adaptive control algorithm designed to determine gait phase in real-time using an inertial measurement unit (IMU) affixed to the shank. Focusing on detecting specific gait events, primarily initial contact (IC) and toe-off (TO), the algorithm utilizes dynamic thresholds and ratios that facilitate accurate event determination adaptively across a range of walking speeds. Built-in safety checks further ensure precision and minimize false detections. We validated the algorithm with eight participants walking at varying speeds. The algorithm demonstrated promising result

DyNeuMo Mk-2: An Investigational Circadian-Locked Neuromodulator with Responsive Stimulation for Applied Chronobiology.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson's disease, essential tremor and epilepsy is an established palliative treatment. DBS uses electrical neuromodulation to suppress symptoms. Most current systems provide a continuous pattern of fixed stimulation, with clinical follow-ups to refine settings constrained to normal office hours. An issue with this management strategy is that the impact of stimulation on circadian, i.e. sleep-wake, rhythms is not fully considered; either in the device design or in the clinical follow-up. Since devices can be implanted in brain targets that couple into the re

Reducing 4DCBCT imaging dose and time: exploring the limits of adaptive acquisition and motion compensated reconstruction.

This study investigates the dose and time limits of adaptive 4DCBCT acquisitions (adaptive-acquisition) compared with current conventional 4DCBCT acquisition (conventional-acquisition). We investigate adaptive-acquisitions as low as 60 projections (∼25 s scan, 6 projections per respiratory phase) in conjunction with emerging image reconstruction methods. 4DCBCT images from 20 patients recruited into the adaptive CT acquisition for personalized thoracic imaging clinical study (NCT04070586) were resampled to simulate faster and lower imaging dose acquisitions. All acquisitions were reconstructed

Adaptive level modification via player skill classification and large language models.

Maintaining player engagement in video games requires a careful balance between challenge and player competence. Static difficulty settings fail to account for individual skill variation, while existing dynamic difficulty adjustment systems are limited to tuning low-level game parameters rather than restructuring level content. This paper presents an adaptive level modification framework that personalizes gameplay by continuously inferring player skill and applying targeted structural modifications to level content in real-time. A hybrid behavioral dataset is constructed by combining agent-gen

Development and assessment of a natural language processing model to identify residential instability in electronic health records' unstructured data: a comparison of 3 integrated healthcare delivery systems.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether a natural language processing (NLP) algorithm could be adapted to extract, with acceptable validity, markers of residential instability (ie, homelessness and housing insecurity) from electronic health records (EHRs) of 3 healthcare systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included patients 18 years and older who received care at 1 of 3 healthcare systems from 2016 through 2020 and had at least 1 free-text note in the EHR during this period. We conducted the study independently; the NLP algorithm logic and method of validity assessment were identical across sites. The

Resilient consensus control for networked robotic manipulators under actuator faults and deception attacks.

Resilient consensus control refers to a system's ability to maintain agreement among its components despite disruptions, failures, or malicious attacks. This paper introduces a resilient control algorithm for a group of robotic manipulators to achieve leader-follower consensus within their workspace, despite actuator faults and deception attacks affecting exchanged signals. The proposed approach leverages adaptive control algorithms to develop the control laws. It begins by introducing an adaptive fault-tolerant tracking control to ensure tracking performance despite model uncertainties, actua

Online learning algorithms for principal component analysis applied on single-lead ECGs.

This article evaluates several adaptive approaches to solve the principal component analysis (PCA) problem applied on single-lead ECGs. Recent studies have shown that the principal components can indicate morphologically or environmentally induced changes in the ECG signal and can be used to extract other vital information such as respiratory activity. Special interest is focused on the convergence behavior of the selected gradient algorithms, which is a major criterion for the usability of the gained results. As the right choice of learning rates is very data dependant and subject to movement
