The first-degree relatives of patients affected by colorectal cancer, who do not belong to familial adenomatous polyposis and hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer families, have a doubled risk of developing tumors of the large intestine. We have previously demonstrated that subjects with a single first-degree relative (SFDR) with colon cancer have a doubled risk for developing colorectal adenomas, and in these cases, polyps recur more frequently. The mechanism underlying this predisposition has not been clarified. In this study, we evaluated the frequency of microsatellite instability (MS

In the absence of a polyposis phenotype, colorectal cancer (CRC) patients referred for genetic testing because of early-onset disease and/or a positive family history, typically undergo testing for molecular signs of Lynch syndrome in their tumors. In the absence of these signs, DNA testing for germline mutations associated with other known tumor syndromes is usually not performed. However, a few studies in large series of CRC patients suggest that in a small percentage of CRC cases, bi-allelic MUTYH germline mutations can be found in the absence of the MUTYH-associated polyposis phenotype. Taste perception may influence dietary preferences and nutrient intakes contributing to diet-related disease susceptibility. This study examined bitter taste genetics and whether variation in the TAS2R38 gene at three polymorphic loci (A49P, V262A and I296V) could alter dietary and systemic folate levels and dietary vitamin C intake, and whether a nutrigenetic circuit existed that might link bitter taste, folate/antioxidant status and risk for a colonic adenomatous polyp. TAS2R38 diplotype predicted bitter taste (PROP) phenotype (p value <0.00001) and red cell folate status (p=0.0179) consiste

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Tyrosine kinase and a number of growth factors, especially EGF and TGF-alpha are known to stimulate proliferation in much of the gastrointestinal tract, including colon. In humans increased colonic mucosal proliferative activity has been observed in numerous premalignant lesions including adenomatous polyps and ulcerative colitis. The aim of the present study was to determine the differences of proliferative patterns in patients with adenomatous polyps, ulcerative colitis and colonic adenocarcinoma as reflected by rectal mucosa tyrosine kinase, EGF receptor tyrosine kinase and

We investigated the distribution of short chain fatty acids (SCFA) in enema samples taken from subjects before sigmoidoscopy as an indicator of possible microbial community differences between subjects subsequently diagnosed as normal or having colonic disorders. The major SCFA in all groups were acetic, propionic, and butyric acids. A significantly higher ratio of acetate to total SCFA and lower ratio of butyrate to total SCFA was found for polyp-colon cancer subjects than for normal subjects. There were no significant differences in the ratios of acetate, propionate, or butyrate between the

Polyps in the stomach and duodenum are frequently found in familial adenomatous polyposis. Cancer arising from some of these polyps may be an important cause of death in patients who have had large bowel resections. This study aims to determine the nature and distribution of foregut polyps in Chinese patients. Twenty-five patients with familial adenomatous polyposis were gastroscoped by a single operator using the end viewing video-endoscopy system. Representative biopsies of normal mucosa or polyps where appropriate were taken from the gastric fundus, antrum and the duodenum. Twenty-five pati

Familial adenomatous polyposis is an autosomal dominant hereditary disease characterized by the appearance of hundreds to thousands of colorectal adenomatous polyps; if left untreated, there is nearly a 100% lifetime risk of colorectal cancer. In the present case, adenomatous polyps were observed at 6 years of age. Unlike our previous assumption, adenomatous polyps were detected by colonoscopy at <10 years of age. Considering the clinical importance of early diagnosis, we report this case involving germline adenomatous polyposis coli mutation (c.1958G > C, GenBank: M74088.1) that caused an inc

In the United States, colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer diagnosed among men and women and the second leading cause of death from cancer. CRC largely can be prevented by the detection and removal of adenomatous polyps, and survival is significantly better when CRC is diagnosed while still localized. In 2006 to 2007, the American Cancer Society, the US Multi Society Task Force on Colorectal Cancer, and the American College of Radiology came together to develop consensus guidelines for the detection of adenomatous polyps and CRC in asymptomatic average-risk adults. In this u

Forty-nine cases of gastric polyp (GP) were studied by histologic classification and immunohistochemical localization of monoclonal antibody MG 7 against gastric carcinoma. There were 12 cases (24.5%) of inflammatory polyp; 19 cases (38.8%) of hyperplastic polyp and 18 cases (36.7%) of adenomatous polyp. 3 cases (6.1%) of GP were malignant, among which 2 (11.1%) were adenomatous polyp and 1 (5.3%) was hyperplastic polyp. Seventeen cases (34.7%) of GP were MG 7 positive by ABC method, including 7 (36.8%) of hyperplastic polyp and 10 (55.5%) of adenomatous polyp. The inflammatory polyps were neg

Diminutive hyperplastic polyps are the most common non-neoplastic lesions of the colon. Typically, they are small (< 0.5 cm) sessile lesions, lack cellular atypia, and are found predominantly in the rectosigmoid region of the colon. Multiple large hyperplastic polyps (> 1 cm) are rare. Although the relationship between diminutive hyperplastic polyps and adenomatous polyps or carcinoma is controversial, even less data are available on the significance of large hyperplastic polyps. We report the case of a 56-yr-old man who was seen because of fatigue, anemia, and Hemoccult-positive stool. On air

A colonoscopy and colonoscopic polypectomy service was established at Wellington Hospital, New Zealand in April 1975. Between April 1975 and March 1990 1157 polyps were either removed or biopsied and examined histologically. Twenty-five polyps were lost. Patient-age seemed to increase through the spectrum hyperplastic, tubular, tubulovillous, villous, and polypoid carcinoma. Sessile < 6 mm in diameter hyperplastic polyps were more numerous than small adenomatous polyps. Pedunculated tumours were most commonly adenomata in all sizes, whereas sessile tumours in the rectum and sigmoid colon were

Colonic polyps were systematically searched for in 508 specimens collected from unselected autopsies in individuals more than 10 years of age from Medellín, Colombia, a low-incidence geographic region for colorectal cancer. Adenomatous polyps have a low prevalence rate in both sexes, comparable to that found in Cali, Colombia and other populations with low risk for cancer. They were found more frequently in the right side of the colon and are rare in the sigmoid colon. They begin to appear in the third decade of life in both sexes. Prevalence rates for single and multiple polyps increase with

Prospective investigation has been undertaken with the aim to study the frequency, location and age and sex distribution of various histological types of benign gastric epithelial polyps. Histological type--adenomatous, hyperplastic and fundic gland polyps--was diagnosed on the basis of at least three histological samples taken from the polyp. Biopsy samples were also taken from the antrum and the body of the stomach so that gastritis could be graded and classified, and the presence of H. pylori could be determined by histology. All 6,700 patients, who had undergone upper gastrointestinal endo

OBJECTIVE: Knowledge of a possible correlation between distal polyps found at screening sigmoidoscopy and proximal colonic lesions is important for deciding whether to perform total colonoscopy or not.
PATIENTS: A prospective analysis of 2439 consecutive patients with colorectal polyps. Of these, 304 were asymptomatic subjects who underwent complete colonoscopy for screening and were found to have adenomatous or hyperplastic polyps in the distal colorectum.
RESULTS: Ten (15%) out of 65 patients with distal hyperplastic polyps only and 86 (36%) out of 239 with distal adenomatous polyps were f

Six hundred thirty-two patients were referred to the Colorectal Clinic from February 1983 to February 1986 for screening with the Pentax 65 cm flexible sigmoidoscope. Forty-nine of these patients (8 percent) had adenomatous polyps. There were 27 males and 22 females. The mean distance examined by the 65 cm flexible sigmoidoscope was 55 cm. Five patients were excluded from analysis, leaving 44 patients who underwent colonoscopy to the cecum. At the time of colonoscopy, 15 of the 44 patients (34 percent) had one or more adenomatous polyps beyond reach of the 65 cm flexible sigmoidoscope. The rem

BACKGROUND: Juvenile polyps (JPs) are the most common gastrointestinal polyps diagnosed in children. There is paucity of evidence differentiating polyp burden groups and the presence and significance of neoplastic changes.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients, ages birth through 18 years with nonsyndromic JPs was performed from 2003 to 2017. Abstracted data included basic demographics, age, clinical presentation, colonoscopy findings, and pathology report. Slides of polyps with neoplasia were reviewed by a pathologist.
RESULTS: A total of 213 subjects underwent 326 procedures an

Familial adenomatous polyposis syndrome is a rare condition characterized by the presence of numerous adenomatous polyps in the gastrointestinal tract and associated with risk for colorectal cancer. The disease is scarcely reported in Nigeria and this is the index report in Ilorin. Two cases were clinically diagnosed in our facility. They both presented with gastrointestinal bleeding and numerous rectal and colonic polyps were identified at colonoscopy. Histological examination of the polyps in both cases revealed features in keeping with adenomatous polyps. This report highlights the occurren

BACKGROUND & AIMS: An attenuated form of familial adenomatous polyposis has been described, but the phenotype remains poorly understood.
METHODS: We performed genetic testing on 810 individuals from 2 attenuated familial adenomatous polyposis kindreds harboring an identical germline adenomatous polyposis coli gene mutation. Colonoscopy was performed on mutation-positive persons.
RESULTS: The disease-causing mutation was present in 184 individuals. Adenomatous polyps were present in 111 of 120 gene carriers who had colonoscopy at an average age of 41 years. The median number of adenomas was 2
