[Healthy obesity? Why the adiposity paradox is only seemingly paradox].

The health consequences of being overweight have been discussed controversially. Indeed, from a metabolic point of view, overweight and obese people are quite heterogenous. The body mass index (BMI) is not suitable to predict health oriented outcomes on an individual level without taking into account further parameters such as waist circumference, blood pressure, serum glucose, serum lipids, and physical fitness. The BMI does not distinguish between metabolically healthy and metabolically unhealthy. Of upmost importance for health consequences of obesity is body fat distribution. Two types of

Early infant feeding and adiposity risk: from infancy to adulthood.

INTRODUCTION: Systematic reviews suggest that a longer duration of breast-feeding is associated with a reduction in the risk of later overweight and obesity. Most studies examining breast-feeding in relation to adiposity have not used longitudinal analysis. In our study, we aimed to examine early infant feeding and adiposity risk in a longitudinal cohort from birth to young adulthood using new as well as published data. METHODS: Data from the Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study in Perth, W.A., Australia, were used to examine associations between breast-feeding and measures of ad

Emotional psychopathology and increased adiposity: follow-up study in adolescents.

Based on data from a three-year longitudinal study, we assess the effect, according to gender, of emotional psychopathology in preadolescence on anthropometric and body composition parameters in adolescence (N = 229). Psychopathology was assessed using the Screen for Childhood Anxiety and Related Emotional Disorders, the Children's Depression Inventory and the MINI-International Neuropsychiatric Interview for Kids. Body fat percentage (%BF), waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI) were also determined. Following analysis with adjusted multiple regression models, the results indicate

Adiposity and the relationship between vitamin D and blood pressure.

OBJECTIVE: Circulating vitamin D (25OHD) concentrations are negatively associated with blood pressure (BP) but little is known about the mechanisms for this relationship. Adiposity is positively associated with BP and inversely with circulating 25OHD concentrations but no studies have assessed the relationship between plasma 25OHD and adiposity on BP. The goal of this study is to investigate if the association between plasma 25OHD and BP is mediated by adiposity. MATERIALS/METHODS: The relationship between plasma 25OHD, systolic and diastolic BP, and adiposity [BMI, waist circumference, visce

Links between mothers' and children's disinhibited eating and children's adiposity.

Few studies have examined relationships between parents' and children's specific disinhibited eating behaviors. We investigated links among mothers' and children's binge/loss of control eating, eating in the absence of hunger, and children's adiposity in 305 non-treatment-seeking youth, aged 8-17 years (13.62±2.65 years; 49.8% female) and their mothers. Youths' loss of control eating and eating in the absence of hunger were assessed by interview and self-report questionnaire. Children's adiposity was assessed with BMI-z and air displacement plethysmography. Maternal binge eating, eating in the

Correlation between serum resistin level and adiposity in obese individuals.

OBJECTIVE: Resistin is associated with insulin resistance in mice and may play a similar role in humans. The aim of our study was to examine the relationship of serum resistin level to body composition, insulin resistance, and related obesity phenotypes in humans. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Sixty-four young (age 32 +/- 10 years), obese (BMI 32.9 +/- 5.6), nondiabetic subjects taking no medication, and 15 lean (BMI 21.1 +/- 1.3) volunteers were studied cross-sectionally. Thirty-five of the subjects were also reevaluated after 1.5 years on a weight reduction program entailing dieting and

Adiposity and the development of diabetes in mouse genetic models.

While it is certain from the analysis of transgenic models of lipodystrophy that a critical mass of adipose tissue is necessary to prevent the development of diabetes, the reasons why diabetes develops in one obese individual and not in another need to be further investigated. This is also one of the major questions associated with the current obesity epidemic and the development of the metabolic syndrome. The severe lipodystrophic models do not really address this big problem. In this presentation, we point out that models exist among inbred strains of mice that can contribute towards finding

Preweaning food intake influences the adiposity of young adult baboons.

The hypothesis that preweaning nutrition influences adult fat cell number and adiposity was tested in baboons. Newborn baboons were fed Similac formulas with caloric densities of 40.5 kcal (underfed), 67.5 kcal (fed normally), and 94.5 kcal (overfed) per 100 g formula. From weaning (16 wk) until necropsy at 5 yr of age all baboons were fed the same diet. At necropsy, fat cell number and fat cell size in 10 fat depots were measured. Female baboons overfed as infants had markedly greater fat depot mass, primarily because of fat cell hypertrophy, than normally fed or underfed females. Overfed mal

Inflammatory Proteomic Network Architecture of Visceral Adiposity and Cardiometabolic Traits.

Background : Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is strongly associated with cardiometabolic disease, but the network architecture connecting visceral adiposity to systemic inflammatory proteins and cardiometabolic traits remains poorly characterized. Methods : We applied an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven network integration approach to plasma inflammatory proteomics (Olink Explore 384) and cardiometabolic traits (VAT, HOMA-IR, glucose, systolic blood pressure [SBP], triglycerides [TG], LDL-C, and HDL-C) in the Vitamin D and Omega-3 Trial (VITAL) discovery cohort (n = 635). Urine Metabolism Biomarkers Predict Preterm Infant Adiposity at Hospital Discharge.

In infants born to women with diabetes (DM), this study explores associations of urinary metabolite patterns with adiposity development in the newborn period. In term and preterm (30-36 weeks gestational age) infants, body composition assessments were completed at hospital discharge. In urine samples from the first week, a targeted metabolomics assay was used. Quantile regression was used to evaluate associations of metabolite groups with DM in pregnancy and infant adiposity. Among 91 infants, 25 (27%) were exposed to DM, 68 (75%) were preterm. In the factor analysis, there was an association

Unpacking adiposity: a narrative critical appraisal of diverse obesity definitions.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a complex, multifaceted chronic disease that poses a major global health challenge. Traditionally, population-level screening and follow-up have relied heavily on body mass index (BMI). Although BMI provides a simple, standardized measure for epidemiological studies, it does not account for individual variations in muscle mass, fat distribution, or metabolic health. Consequently, relying solely on weight-to-height ratios-even when supplemented with waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, or waist-to-height ratio-limits precise individual diagnosis and comprehensive heal

Prediabetes Associates With Musculoskeletal Alterations Independent of Total Body Adiposity.

BACKGROUND: Excess adiposity is a major risk factor for insulin resistance, prediabetes, and Type 2 diabetes and increases the risk for sarcopenia and osteosarcopenia later in life. It has been proposed that altered metabolic function and musculoskeletal status in people with obesity are directly linked, presumably because they share common pathophysiological mechanisms. However, the effect of metabolic dysfunction, independent of adiposity, on musculoskeletal status is unknown. METHODS: We performed a comprehensive assessment of musculoskeletal status in people with overweight/obesity and pr

Association between adiposity and psoriatic arthritis beyond classical clinical predictors.

BACKGROUND: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) develops in a substantial proportion of patients with psoriasis. Although obesity has been linked to PsA, whether adiposity independently amplifies articular risk beyond established predictors remains incompletely defined. OBJECTIVE: To explore whether adiposity showed a graded association with PsA across different clinical strata. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 519 psoriatic disease cases (27.2% with PsA). Multivariable logistic regression models assessed the association of waist circumference (per 10 cm) and body mass index (BMI) with PsA

Lymph Node Adiposity and Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease.

Objective: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), previously known as the most common chronic liver disease, is soon to be the leading indication for liver transplantation; however, the diagnosis may remain occult for decades. There is a need for biomarkers that identify patients at risk for MASLD and patients at risk for disease progression to optimize patient management and outcomes. Lymph node adiposity (LNA) is a novel marker of adiposity identified within axillary lymph nodes on screening mammography. Recent studies have demonstrated a correlation between LNA an

Increased adiposity impairs vascular function in postmenopausal women in hemodialysis.

This study examines the impact of increased body fat on vascular function in postmenopausal women and old men with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis. We included 34 postmenopausal women with CKD under hemodialysis (PMW-CKD-HDys) and 31 age-matched men with CKD also under hemodialysis (M-CKD-HDys). We assessed blood pressure and endothelial function (EFn) through measurements of flow-mediated dilation (FMD). We also evaluated systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP), body mass index (BMI), fat total index (FTI), and lean total index (LTI). A subgroup of patients wi
