Maximal tongue strength in typically developing children and adolescents.

Evaluating tongue function is clinically important as the generation of adequate pressure by the anterior tongue against the hard palate is crucial for efficient oropharyngeal swallowing. Research in the evaluation of tongue function in pediatric populations is limited due to questions about the reliability of children's performance on objective measures of tongue strength and the lack of comparative data from typically developing children. The present study examined tongue strength in 150 children and adolescents, 3-16 years of age, with no history of speech or swallowing disorders using the

Development of bladder control in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy.

The study aimed to investigate the development of bladder control in children with cerebral palsy (CP) and to determinate subgroups with deviant development of bladder control and a higher risk of not achieving urinary continence. Children and adolescents between the ages of 4 and 18 years with a diagnosis of CP, from six Dutch rehabilitation centres were included in the study (n=601). Parents of these participants were sent a questionnaire, of whom 76% responded. Prevalence of primary urinary incontinence was 23.5%. Survival curves were made to determine the development of achieving bladder c

Identifying and developing empirically supported child and adolescent treatments.

Child and adolescent therapy outcome research findings attest to the efficacy of a variety of treatments. This article illustrates promising treatments for selected internalizing (anxiety and depression), externalizing (oppositional, and antisocial behavior), and other (obesity and autism) conditions, and for other aims (preparation for medical and dental procedures). Studies in these areas illustrate worthwhile characteristics that can help inform the search for empirically supported treatments. These characteristics include randomized controlled trials, well-described and replicable treatmen

[The effect of enalapril on the development of diabetic nephropathy in children and adolescents].

Diabetic nephropathy is the most frequent cause of chronic renal insufficiency in adults. Its early stage, characterized by increased albuminuria, develops in susceptible subjects already manifestation of diabetes. This stage can be treated by inhibitors of the angiotensin-converting enzyme which reduce the pathologically elevated intraglomerular pressure even in normotonic subjects. Enalapril was administered for a period of 12 weeks to eight children and adolescents with a normal blood pressure and albuminuria of 30-300 mg/24 hours during repeated assessments. During treatment there was not

Etiopathogenesis in the Development of Borderline Personality Characteristics in Children and Adolescents.

The validity and clinical significance of the characteristics of borderline personality disorder (BPD) in adolescents are increasingly being recognized. The persistence of BPD characteristics in adolescence is high and is associated with negative interpersonal, academic, professional, and financial outcomes. In the literature, BPD characteristics observed in children and adolescents are explained with psychodynamic theories, developmental models, and evolutionary approaches. Emotional dysregulation, interpersonal dysfunction, impulsivity, and self-harming behavior, negative life events, temper

Outdoor air pollution and brain development in childhood and adolescence.

Exposure to outdoor air pollution has been linked to adverse health effects, including potential widespread impacts on the CNS. Ongoing brain development may render children and adolescents especially vulnerable to neurotoxic effects of air pollution. While mechanisms remain unclear, promising advances in human neuroimaging can help elucidate both sensitive periods and neurobiological consequences of exposure to air pollution. Herein we review the potential influences of air pollution exposure on neurodevelopment, drawing from animal toxicology and human neuroimaging studies. Due to ongoing ce

Macronutrient intake is associated with intelligence and neural development in adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Macronutrient intake can be one of the most influential factors in cognitive and neural development in adolescents. Adolescence is a specific period of cognitive and neural development, and nutritional effects during this period could be life-long. Therefore, understanding the effects of macronutrient intake on cognitive and neural development in adolescents is crucially important. We thus examined the association across macronutrient intake, intelligence, and neural development using population-based cohort data. METHODS: We conducted two studies. In study 1, we included a tota

Effects of a Standardized DBT-A Program on Identity Development in Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Identity diffusion plays a central role in the onset of borderline personality disorders. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A) is a treatment program for adolescents with emotional instability and dysregulation. The interest of this study is to examine the potential effects of a standardized and certified DBT-A therapy program on the identity development of adolescents in an inpatient setting. METHODS: A total of 138 adolescents aged 13 to 18 years with symptoms of severe emotional instability were assessed before and after a certified and standardized 12-week in

Psychosocial Factors in Adolescence and Risk of Development of Eating Disorders.

Background: current findings in the etiopathogenesis of eating disorders (ED) do not allow the formulation of a unique causal model. Currently, the main hypotheses about the etiopathogenesis are based on a multifactorial approach, considering both genetic and environmental factors. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between sociodemographic and behavioral factors, as well as self-esteem, in students of the first cycle of middle school and the probability of belonging to the risk group of eating disorders (ED) measured through the EAT-26 scale. Methods: The study target popula

The development of inhibitory control in adolescence and prospective relations with delinquency.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the central role of inhibitory control in models of adolescent development, few studies have examined the longitudinal development of inhibitory control within adolescence and its prospective association with maladaptive outcomes. The current study evaluated: 1) growth in inhibitory control from early- to middle-adolescence, and 2) the relation between inhibitory control and later delinquency. METHODS: Participants included 387 parent-child dyads (11-13 years old at Wave 1; 55% female; USA). Across three annual assessments, teens completed the Stop Signal Task (SST), and

Neurobiological Risk Factors for the Development of Internet Addiction in Adolescents.

The sudden appearance and spread of Internet addiction in adolescent populations, in association with the rapid escalation of consumed Internet content and the broad availability of smartphones and tablets with Internet access, is posing a new challenge for classical addictology which requires urgent solutions. Like the majority of other psychopathological conditions, pathological Internet addiction depends upon a group of multifactor polygenic conditions. For each specific case, there is a unique combination of inherited characteristics (nervous tissue structure, secretion, degradation, and r

Development of Pelvic Incidence and Lumbar Lordosis in Children and Adolescents.

Pelvic incidence (PI) is a measure of the sagittal orientation of the sacrum relative to the acetabula and is not dependent on posture. In asymptomatic adults, PI correlates with lumbar lordosis. Lumbar lordosis is shown to increase with age following the onset of unassisted bipedal locomotion in children, but to what extent PI changes in relation to lumbar lordosis during skeletal maturation is unclear. The purpose of this study is to understand how PI, lumbar lordosis, and age are related in children and adolescents. PI, supine lumbar lordosis (SLL), and individual wedging angles of the lumb

Holistic assessment of anger in adolescents - Development of a rating scale.

BACKGROUND: Anger related issues in adolescents are an important contributor to adolescent mortality and many negative developmental outcomes. Anger being the most primitive defence mechanism, determining its maladaptive nature is a complex phenomenon. Further, it lacks clarity in terms of its definition, demarcation from aggression and hostility, and also its assessment. Available anger rating scales do not represent anger adequately or comprehensively. The concept of anger is dealt with exhaustively in Indian classical texts. According to these texts, anger is an evil virtue that is born out

Frontostriatal development and probabilistic reinforcement learning during adolescence.

Adolescence has traditionally been viewed as a period of vulnerability to increased risk-taking and adverse outcomes, which have been linked to neurobiological maturation of the frontostriatal reward system. However, growing research on the role of developmental changes in the adolescent frontostriatal system in facilitating learning will provide a more nuanced view of adolescence. In this review, we discuss the implications of existing research on this topic for learning during adolescence, and suggest that the very neural changes that render adolescents vulnerable to social pressure and risk

Longitudinal Study of Caries Development from Childhood to Adolescence.

The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that globally, dental caries is the most important oral condition. To develop effective prevention strategies requires an understanding of how this condition develops and progresses over time, but there are few longitudinal studies of caries onset and progression in children. The aim of the study was to establish the pattern of caries development from childhood into adolescence and to explore the role of potential risk factors (age, sex, ethnicity, and social deprivation). Of particular interest was the disease trajectory of dentinal caries in the per

Working memory filtering continues to develop into late adolescence.

While most measures of working memory (WM) performance have been shown to plateau by mid-adolescence and developmental changes in fronto-parietal regions supporting WM encoding and maintenance have been well characterized, little is known about developmental variation in WM filtering. We investigated the possibility that the neural underpinnings of filtering in WM reach maturity later in life than WM function without filtering. Using a cued WM filtering task (McNab and Klingberg, 2008), we investigated neural activity during WM filtering in a sample of 64 adults and adolescents. Regardless of

The development of psychotic disorders in adolescence: a potential role for hormones.

This article is part of a Special Issue "Puberty and Adolescence". The notion that adolescence is characterized by dramatic changes in behavior, and often by emotional upheaval, is widespread and longstanding in popular western culture. In recent decades, this notion has gained increasing support from empirical research showing that the peri- and post-pubertal developmental stages are associated with a significant rise in the rate of psychiatric symptoms and syndromes. As a result, interest in adolescent development has burgeoned among researchers focused on the origins of schizophrenia and ot

Skill development in an employment-training program for adolescents with disabilities.

PURPOSE: Relatively little is known about the first employment experiences and skill development of youth with disabilities. The purpose of this study is to explore the skills gained by adolescents with disabilities who have completed an employment-training program. METHODS: In-depth, qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 adolescents with a physical and/or mobility-related disability. The youth and their parents also completed a brief questionnaire about their experience in the program and we reviewed their self- and staff-assessments that were completed throughout the

Development of emotional facial recognition in late childhood and adolescence.

The ability to interpret emotions in facial expressions is crucial for social functioning across the lifespan. Facial expression recognition develops rapidly during infancy and improves with age during the preschool years. However, the developmental trajectory from late childhood to adulthood is less clear. We tested older children, adolescents and adults on a two-alternative forced-choice discrimination task using morphed faces that varied in emotional content. Actors appeared to pose expressions that changed incrementally along three progressions: neutral-to-fear, neutral-to-anger, and fear-
