Characterization of Aeromonas hydrophila isolated from freshwater fish with control trial.

Aeromonas hydrophila is an opportunistic pathogen that is highly important for freshwater fish. In the present study, two freshwater fish species Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and Mullet (Mugil cephalus) collected from various fish farms in Kafrelsheikh Governorate, Egypt. The fish samples were examined to determine Aeromonas hydrophila presence (A. hydrophila). In addition, a treatment trial was conducted involving four groups of Nile tilapia fish, which treated with florfenicol (FFC) and oxytetracycline (OTC) based on the antimicrobial susceptibility test results. According to the fin

Multidrug-resistant aeromonas caviae causing cystitis in a renal failure patient.

A 49-year-old female with multiple myeloma complicated by renal failure had dysuria. The urine culture revealed multidrug-resistant aeromonas caviae during her hospital stay. Her symptoms and signs significantly improved after receiving a seven-day course of piperacillin-tazobactam treatment. She had no history of urinary tract infections(UTIs). On follow-up, she felt clinically well. Aeromonas caviae is a rare cause of UTI. We review previous cases of aeromonas caviae UTIs. The purpose of this case report is to assist in the diagnosis and management of aeromonas caviae cystitis.

Crystal Structure of Aeromonas hydrophila Cytoplasmic 5'-Methylthioadenosine/S-Adenosylhomocysteine Nucleosidase.

5'-Methylthioadenosine/S-adenosyl-l-homocysteine (MTA/SAH) nucleosidase (MTAN) is an important enzyme in a number of critical biological processes. Mammals do not express MtaN, making this enzyme an attractive antibacterial drug target. In pathogen Aeromonas hydrophila, two MtnN subfamily genes (MtaN-1 and MtaN-2) play important roles in the periplasm and cytosol, respectively. We previously reported structural and functional analyses of MtaN-1, but little is known regarding MtaN-2 due to the lack of a crystal structure. Here, we determined the crystal structure of cytosolic A. hydrophila MtaN

Antibiotic resistance and repetitive-element PCR fingerprinting in Aeromonas veronii isolates.

This study evaluated antibiotic resistance and the related genes in total 47 Aeromonas veronii isolates from pet fish, eel (Anguilla japonica) and koi (Cyprinus carpio) in Korea. In comparison with the antibiotic susceptibilities of isolates from eel and koi, those of pet fish were more resistant to ceftiofur, aminoglycosides, tetracycline and nitrofurantoin. And isolates from pet fish showed high prevalences of class 1 integron, quinolones and tetracycline resistance determinants than those from eel and koi. Repetitive-element palindromic PCR (rep-PCR) showed larger diversities among A. veron

Antibiogram profiling and pathogenic status of Aeromonas species recovered from Chicken.

Poultry meat and its products are widely consumed by humans globally, however, Aeromonas infections in poultry have been reported in different parts of the world with devastating effects. This study was carried out to assess the antibiogram and biofilm forming potential of Aeromonas isolated from chicken fecal samples. Aeromonas isolates were screened for antibiotic susceptibility using antibiotics disk and biofilm producing potentials on abiotic surfaces. Nineteen isolates recovered from chicken feces were 100% sensitive to ciprofloxacin, gentamicin and the tetracyclines. About 53% of Aeromon

Phylogenetic diversity of Aeromonas from "alheira," a traditional Portuguese meat product.

"Alheira" is a traditional smoked meat sausage produced in the north of Portugal, representing an important economic resource for the region. This meat product has been subjected to research studies with the aim of detecting the presence of common foodborne pathogens, but, to our knowledge, isolation of emerging foodborne Aeromonas from alheira has never been previously described. Present work attempts to evaluate the Aeromonas species diversity of 84 isolates of Aeromonas spp. collected from 32 alheira samples. All presumptive Aeromonas isolates were subjected to genotyping by enterobacterial

Aeromonas hydrophila myonecrosis accompanying mucormycosis five years after bone marrow transplantation.

A 36-year-old man, five years after bone marrow transplantation for aplastic anemia, was admitted with myonecrosis of the forearm after he had immersed his hand in sewage water several days prior to his admission. Blood cultures and specimens taken from the necrotic tissue of the arm all grew Aeromonas hydrophila. Following extension of the infection, the patient underwent amputation of the arm but ultimately died of cerebral mucormycosis. The epidemiology of Aeromonas infections is discussed and the literature of Aeromonas myonecrosis is reviewed.

Integration of transcriptomics and metabolomics reveals the mechanism of enrofloxacin resistance in Aeromonas schubertii.

Aeromonas schubertii infections has caused severe economic losses in aquaculture in China. In this study, we first induced enrofloxacin (ENR) resistance in A. schubertii strains and then analyzed the mechanisms of drug resistance using transcriptomics and metabolomics. We found that the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 0.03125 μg/mL for the sensitive strain (WL23S) and 32 μg/mL for the resistant strain (WL23R), which is a 1024-fold increase. After 40 serial passages, the WL23R strain maintained a MIC of 32 μg/mL, even in the absence of ENR-induced stress. Notably, it had also develop

Isolation of Aeromonas hydrophila in the respiratory tract of wild boar: pathologic implications.

Aeromonas hydrophila has been repeatedly reported as an animal pathogen. This study describes a case of a wild boar piglet in Spain with severe purulent pneumonia caused by A. hydrophila. To confirm the presence of A. hydrophila in the respiratory tract of wild boars from the same region, lung samples from 34 adult hunted animals and nasal samples from 12 live animals were collected and cultured in selective medium. Lung lesions were studied in hunted wild boars to determine the presence of A. hydrophila and to assess its role as a possible respiratory pathogen in wild boars. A. hydrophila was

IS-mediated loss of virulence by Aeromonas salmonicida: A tangible piece of an evolutionary puzzle.

Insertion sequences (IS) are abundant in the bacterial fish pathogen Aeromonas salmonicida genome. IS are involved in rearrangement events that lead to the loss of virulence. In previous work, we studied a plasmid rearrangement that causes the deletion of the type three secretion system in A. salmonicida, resulting in a loss of virulence. We showed that the rearrangement is caused by the recombination of two IS (ISAS11) on an unstable plasmid (pAsa5). However, many rearrangements cannot be explained by our experimental approach and are thought to be the result of more complex or incomplete rea
