SETTING: Long transportation times of samples to culture laboratories can lead to higher contamination rates and significant loss of viability, resulting in lower culture positivity rates. The performance of a novel dipslide (DipStreak; Novamed, Israel) consisting of chromogenic agar (Uriselect 3; Sanofi Pasteur, France) and blood agar media was evaluated prospectively and compared to that of conventional urine culture for the diagnosis of urinary tract infection. A total of 1070 clean-catch urine specimens obtained from 251 hospitalized patients and 819 outpatients were processed. We have found striking changes in the morphology of colonies of Chinese hamster ovary cells grown on agar containing low doses of dimethyl sulfoxide. Helicobacter pylori is a motile bacterial pathogen that causes severe gastric diseases. H. pylori motility and chemotaxis are key colonization factors. Motility and chemotaxis are studied in many microbes, including H. pylori, using soft agar assays.
