Older military veterans are at greater risk for psychiatric disorders than same-aged non-veterans. However, little is known about factors that may protect older veterans from developing these disorders. We considered whether an association exists between the potentially stress-reducing factor of resistance to negative age stereotypes and lower prevalence of the following outcomes among older veterans: suicidal ideation, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Participants consisted of 2031 veterans, aged 55 or older, who were drawn from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans

This review examines the legal validity of consent to healthcare services given by older patients, with particular emphasis on cognitive impairment, the patient's actual capacity to make healthcare decisions, and the protection of patient autonomy in the decision-making process. The study is based on a narrative literature review combined with a doctrinal legal analysis of Polish statutory provisions, case law, and literature in medical law, geriatrics, cognitive psychology, and bioethics. The analysis indicates that reaching 60 years of age does not create a separate legal regime for consent

BACKGROUND: There is an international trend for frail older adults to move to residential care homes, rather than ageing at home. Residential facilities typically espouse a person-centred philosophy, yet evidence points to restrictive policies and surveillance resulting in increased loneliness and diminished opportunities for intimacy and sexual expression. Residents may experience what has been termed social death, rather than perceive they are related to by others as socially alive.
AIM: To consider how the loss of intimacy and sexuality in residents' lives contributes to iatrogenic lonelin

Multiple myeloma is a disease of the elderly. Survival outcomes remain unacceptably low in older adults with multiple myeloma. To date, no obvious difference in tumor biology has been elucidated to explain the survival disparity between older and younger patients. Multiple factors including comorbidity, performance status, decreased physiologic reserve and potentially undertreatment contribute to poor outcomes in elderly patients with multiple myeloma. High-dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) is increasingly being used to treat elderly patients with multiple myel

In order to prevent the rapid spread of COVID-19, governments have placed significant restrictions on liberty, including preventing all non-essential travel. These restrictions were justified on the basis the health system may be overwhelmed by COVID-19 cases and in order to prevent deaths. Governments are now considering how they may de-escalate these restrictions. This article argues that an appropriate approach may be to lift the general lockdown but implement selective isolation of the elderly. While this discriminates against the elderly, there is a morally relevant difference-the elderly

BACKGROUND: Enabling older people to live comfortably in their own neighbourhoods for longer, known as ageing-in-place, has become a policy priority to reduce pressures on health and social care systems amid global population ageing. However, research on place and health remains predominantly deficit-focused, emphasising illness and decline (e.g. frailty, depression, and anxiety). This review adopts a positive psychology perspective and a life-course framework to synthesise evidence on how neighbourhood environments support flourishing in later life, a multidimensional state encompassing happi

OBJECTIVES: A novel process-based conceptual model of positive sexual aging, the Successful Sexual Aging Model, was recently proposed. Given the developmental, epidemiological, and sexological literature on gendered aspects of human sexuality, the current study explored gender differences in successful sexual aging (SSA) among partnered older adults who participated in a cross-cultural research project on aging and sexuality. The assessment was also important for the model's conceptualization of the gendered micro, meso, and macro factors that were assumed to affect SSA.

INTRODUCTION: Sustainable employability has been recognized as a central construct for understanding workers' continued participation in the labor market throughout the life course, particularly in the context of population aging, technological transformations, and changing work arrangements. Despite growing research in this field, conceptual fragmentation and a lack of consensus persist regarding the key factors, organizational practices, and public policies associated with the construct. Accordingly, this study aimed to identify factors, organizational practices, public policies, and researc

BACKGROUND: Increasing breastfeeding rates among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (hereafter, respectfully Aboriginal) infants could improve health outcomes that disproportionately affect Aboriginal children into adulthood. This study was undertaken with mothers birthing Aboriginal children in Adelaide, Australia. The study sought to: understand their perceptions, motivations, influences and experiences around breastfeeding; explore factors affecting the ability to breastfeed; perceptions of alternative feeding options; and experiences of care to support breastfeeding.

BACKGROUND: The number of older adults entering opioid treatment programs (OTPs) to treat opioid use disorder (OUD) is increasing. However, the lived experiences of aging in OTPs have not been examined.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the aging experience with OUD and barriers to medical care for older adults who receive care in OTPs.
DESIGN: From November 2021 to July 2022, we conducted 1-to-1, semi-structured qualitative interviews in English and Spanish, audio-recorded, transcribed, systematically coded, and analyzed to identify key themes regarding the challenges of aging with OUD and managing chr

No one may be refused emergency medical treatment in South Africa (SA). Yet score-based categorical exclusions used in critical care triage guidelines disproportionately discriminate against older adults, the cognitively and physically impaired, and the disabled. Adults over the age of 60, who make up 9.1% of the SA population, are most likely to present with disabilities and comorbidities at triage. Score-based models, drawn from international precedents, deny these patients admission to an ICU when resources are constrained, such as during influenza and COVID-19 outbreaks. The Critical Care

With the increasing life span in our society, the number of widowed individuals has increased dramatically. The loss of a spouse is one of the most stressful life events for both women and men, yet there is little nursing research on the physical and psychosocial needs of older adults who are experiencing this loss. Some studies suggest that widowed women and men develop significant physical and mental health problems and complicated grief. Thus, it is important for nurses to recognize the diversity of grieving experiences and the increased vulnerability of widowed individuals to psychiatric i

INTRODUCTION: Worm infestations are a common occurrence in low-income countries. Anemia due to iron deficiency can be brought on by human intestinal worms. The authors report a case of an 86-year-old frail older adult with upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding caused by a worm infestation most likely to be hookworm.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 86-year-old male, presented to the Emergency Department with complaints of bilateral lower limb swelling and shortness of breath for 4 days associated with melena for 2 months. The authors made a provisional diagnosis of heart failure precipitated by anemia. U

OBJECTIVE: To explore the ageing stereotypes held by health students and faculty members in three health science schools in Chile.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study surveyed 284 students and faculty members from the dental, physical therapy and speech therapy schools of the University of Talca, Chile. A validated 15-question questionnaire about negative stereotypes was used (CENVE). The questions were divided into three categories: (i) health, (ii) social factors and motivation and (iii) character and personality. The scores for each category were grouped into the following categories: (i)

BACKGROUND: Death wishes and end-of-life legislation are increasingly relevant in ageing societies, where demographic shifts and evolving legal frameworks appear to raise complex ethical and clinical challenges.
SUMMARY: Wishes to die among older adults are complex and not limited to mental illness or terminal illness. Although depression and demoralization are common, evidence suggests that many older individuals experience these wishes in the absence of psychiatric disorders. These experiences often reflect an existential response to cumulative losses in autonomy, identity, and social embed

BACKGROUND: The increase in traumatic brain injury (TBI) among older adults in the context of an aging population poses significant challenges, including limited opportunities for social participation and decreased overall well-being. The double stigmatization due to ableism and ageism may further worsen these challenges. To date, interventions designed to support social participation of this population remain scarce and under documented, particularly within community-based settings. Intergenerational initiatives have shown positive impacts on health and social participation. Yet they remain l

INTRODUCTION AND RATIONALE: Hip fracture rates in US nursing homes are alarmingly high, and low treatment rates of osteoporosis suggest a large degree of therapeutic nihilism among health care providers. Reports of reduction in hip fracture rates in the nursing home have been scarce, and experts wonder whether evidence-based treatments, effective in younger populations, will transfer to nursing home residents.
METHODS: A practice redesign project was undertaken in response to high rates of hip fracture in northwest Arkansas nursing homes. Hip fracture rates during the 3 years prior to the pro
