Evolution of throat symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic in the US.

OBJECTIVES: SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) structure and host tropism have changed over time, and so has the involvement of throat structures. This infodemiological analysis is hence aimed at investigating the evolution of throat symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic in the US. METHODS: We searched Google Trends using the medical search terms "ageusia", "hoarseness", "dysphonia", "pharyngitis" and "laryngitis", setting geographical location to "United States", within the past 5 years. The weekly Google Trends score for these symptoms, which reflects their nationa

High seroprevalence but short-lived immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection in Paris.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic peaked in March/April 2020 in France, the prevalence of infection is barely known. Using high-throughput methods, we assessed herein the serological response against the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) of 1847 participants working in three sites of an institution in Paris conurbation. In May-July 2020, 11% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 9.7-12.6) of serums were positive for IgG against the SARS-CoV-2 N and S proteins, and 9.5% (95% CI: 8.2-11.0) were neutralizer in pseudo-typed virus assays. The prevalence of seroconversion was 11.6%

[Gustatory disturbances as sideeffect of medical treatment (author's transl)].

A review of the pharmacological induced taste disorders is given. Many patients complain only of a spontaneous metallic, bitter or salty sensation in their mouths. More serious is the development of a dissociated hypogeusia or even an ageusia. 7 cases with gustatory disturbances caused by orally given medicine are presented. The phenylbutazone, oxyphedrine, carbamazepine, Muskel-Trancopal comp. (Chlormezanon, Paracetamol) and Lioresal (baclofen) were accused to have caused a partial or complete loss of taste. After the treatment had been discontinued it took weeks or even months for a complete

Signs and symptoms to determine if a patient presenting in primary care or hospital outpatient settings has COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The clinical implications of SARS-CoV-2 infection are highly variable. Some people with SARS-CoV-2 infection remain asymptomatic, whilst the infection can cause mild to moderate COVID-19 and COVID-19 pneumonia in others. This can lead to some people requiring intensive care support and, in some cases, to death, especially in older adults. Symptoms such as fever, cough, or loss of smell or taste, and signs such as oxygen saturation are the first and most readily available diagnostic information. Such information could be used to either rule out COVID-19, or select patients for furth

Beyond the Label: Real-World Side Effects Experienced With FDA-Approved Drugs for Non-Melanoma Skin Cancers.

With immunotherapy historically focused on cutaneous melanoma, there has been a new wave of systemic medications available for treating non-melanoma skin cancers including basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). The immune checkpoint inhibitors approved by the FDA target programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) and the Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway. These medications have expanded treatment options; however, side effects are an important consideration. We used the FDA Adverse Events Reporting System (FAERS) to characterize the most prevalent,

Signs and symptoms to determine if a patient presenting in primary care or hospital outpatient settings has COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 illness is highly variable, ranging from infection with no symptoms through to pneumonia and life-threatening consequences. Symptoms such as fever, cough, or loss of sense of smell (anosmia) or taste (ageusia), can help flag early on if the disease is present. Such information could be used either to rule out COVID-19 disease, or to identify people who need to go for COVID-19 diagnostic tests. This is the second update of this review, which was first published in 2020. OBJECTIVES: To assess the diagnostic accuracy of signs and symptoms to determine if a person presenting

The burden of persistent symptoms after COVID-19 (long COVID): a meta-analysis of controlled studies in children and adults.

BACKGROUND: Previous meta-analyses estimating the prevalence of the post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) were confounded by the lack of negative control groups. This may result in an overestimation of the prevalence of those experiencing PCC, as these symptoms are non-specific and common in the general population. In this study, we aimed to compare the burden of persistent symptoms among COVID-19 survivors relative to COVID-19-negative controls. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted using the following databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus) until July 2023 for comparative stu

[Gustatory disorders in COVID-19].

Taste disturbances are present in 20.3-88.0% of COVID-19 cases and are the first signs of infection in 11.0-18.1% of cases. They often manifested 3-7 days after the onset of general respiratory symptoms and last 2 to 16 days, followed by recovery. There are also prolonged disturbances of taste sensation (up to 61-76 days or more), which is associated with damage to various types of receptor cells of the mucous membrane of the tongue. More severe taste disturbances are recorded in the elderly. In women, changes in taste sensation are noted more often than in men, and with a longer recovery peri

Loss of Taste as an Initial Symptom of a "Facial Diplegia and Paresthesia" Variant of Guillain-Barré Syndrome.

Loss of taste is a relatively common symptom of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and has also been considered a rare Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) symptom. We herein report a case of a facial diplegia and paresthesia (FDP) variant of GBS that initially presented as a loss of taste occurring two weeks after COVID-19 mRNA vaccination. The patient recovered completely after intravenous immunoglobulin therapy. Clinicians should consider the possibility of post-vaccination FDP manifesting as facial palsy and should be aware that GBS, including the FDP variant, can initially present as an isolate

Reversible Taste Loss in a COVID-19 Patient With Preexisting Chronic Smell Impairment.

Smell loss is important for coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) screening and diagnosis. Particular attention should be paid to individuals with pre-COVID-19 chronic hyposmia or anosmia. We report a case of reversible taste impairment in a COVID-19 patient with chronically impaired sense of smell. This case emphasizes the importance of COVID-19-related taste assessment.

Persistent high-altitude headache and aguesia without anosmia.

High-altitude headache and taste dysfunction are usually cured within a few months by descent to sea level. We studied a patient who had persistent bitemporal throbbing headache with the associated findings of high-altitude headache syndrome 15 years after a compression chamber accident. He also had loss of taste without loss of smell since the incident.

Bilateral hypogeusia and food aversion due to lacunar infarct in the right dorsomedial pontine tegmentum.

A 70-year-old right-handed housewife suffered an acute loss of taste, an unpleasant change in the taste of foods and liquids, and a strong aversion to all kinds of food due to a small lacune in the right dorsomedial pontine tegmentum. Eating became so unpleasant that she lost 7 kg in three weeks. Olfaction and the sensibility of the tongue were spared. The right medial longitudinal fascicle, the central tegmental tract, or both, were injured by the tegmental lesion. A discrete right-sided lesion in the upper pontine tegmentum may cause a reversible syndrome consisting of bilateral hypogeusia w

Genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in patients presenting neurological manifestations.

During the first wave of infections, neurological symptoms in Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients raised particular concern, suggesting that, in a subset of patients, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) could invade and damage cells of the central nervous system (CNS). Indeed, up to date several in vitro and in vivo studies have shown the ability of SARS-CoV-2 to reach the CNS. Both viral and/or host related features could explain why this occurs only in certain individuals and not in all the infected population. The aim of the present study was to evaluat
