The hormonal and neural control of maternal aggression.

In mice and many other species, aggression levels are low in virgin females but increase dramatically during lactation to protect vulnerable offspring. This aggression, aimed at protecting the young, is known as maternal aggression. It emerges abruptly after parturition, peaks during early lactation, and declines after weaning. Given its stereotyped temporal profile, hormones associated with pregnancy and lactation are believed to play critical roles in its rise and fall. In addition, maternal aggression diminishes within hours of pup separation and rapidly recovers upon pup reunion, indicatin

Interpersonal threat reactivity differentiates reactive and proactive aggression.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents with Conduct Disorder (CD) display persistent patterns of antisocial and aggressive behavior, yet the mechanisms underlying different forms of aggression remain unclear. Prior research has linked antisocial behavior to atypical autonomic nervous system functioning, but few studies have examined physiological and subjective reactions to interpersonal conflict simultaneously. METHOD: Participants were 234 adolescents (Mage = 15.68; 67% male) with CD. This study examined sympathetic nervous system reactivity using skin conductance responses (SCR) and self-reported emotiona

Female Aggression and Mental Health: A Systematic Review.

This systematic review synthesizes findings on female-to-female aggression and its mental health consequences across the lifespan. Although bullying among females represents a significant public health concern, the literature has historically underexamined how relational forms of aggression, including social exclusion, gossip, and peer manipulation, affect women over time. Three research questions organized the review: (a) How do negative social groups affect women? (b) What are the longer-term consequences of childhood bullying for women in adulthood? (c) What outcomes are associated with agg

Coalitionary intra-group aggression by wild female bonobos.

In humans and non-human primates, male aggression and physical violence are common strategies in the struggle over power and are efficient in exerting control over individuals and groups. In contrast, our close relative, the bonobo (Pan paniscus) is often described as an exceptionally peaceful primate due to the lack of lethal aggression or infanticide and the tendency for individuals to reconcile after conflicts. Nonetheless, rates of male aggression are high1, but, atypically for primates, bonobo females are observed to confront males without support from others. Despite female exogamy, form

Bulimia symptoms and anger and aggression among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has indicated that anger and aggression may be elevated in adolescents with a bulimia nervosa (BN) diagnosis. However, as yet, little is known about whether bulimia symptoms are linked to anger and aggression in adolescents in the general population. To address this deficit this study aimed to explore the associations between a clinical level of bulimia symptoms (CLBS) and anger, anger rumination and aggression in community-based adolescents, and determine whether gender is important in this context. METHODS: This study was conducted on a representative sample of

Demand-avoid-withdraw processes in adolescent dating aggression.

We conducted an observational study of a collection of interactive processes known as "demand-withdraw" in relation to adolescent dating aggression. Couples (N = 209) aged 14-18 years participated in a challenging observational laboratory assessment to measure demands (i.e., pressures for a change), as well as demand → partner withdraw and demand → partner avoid sequences. Actor and partner effects were disentangled via dyadic data analyses. The results indicated a fairly consistent pattern in which demand → withdraw and demand → avoid sequences led by either partner were positively associated

Toxoplasma gondii Infection and Aggression in Autistic Children.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasmosis is an infectious disease caused by the obligatory intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii. The main aim of this study was to evaluate a possible relationship between aggression in autistic children with infection by T. gondii. METHODS: The research design was an analytical (comparative) cross sectional study. The participants included (N = 100) subjects (50 autistic and 50 normal children) between 3 and 12 years old. They were matched for age, socioeconomic status, lack of physical and mental illness. The instruments were preschool aggression scale and enzyme-linked

[Rheumatic mitral aggression. Usefulness of 3d transesophageal echocardiography].

Rheumatic heart disease is the leading cause of cardiovascular disease in children under 25 years of age worldwide, with the highest prevalence in low-income countries. The usual and distinctive finding of rheumatic aggression is mitral stenosis, which leads to serious cardiovascular consequences. International guidelines establish transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) as the diagnostic test for rheumatic heart disease; however, it has limitations in the measurement of planimetry and those inherent to Doppler. Transesophageal 3D echocardiography (TTE-3D) is a new modality that shows realistic i

Correlates of Aggression in Personality Disorders: an Update.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review article aims at giving an update on studies investigating correlates of aggression in personality disorders during the last 5 years. RECENT FINDINGS: Most data refer to borderline personality disorder (BPD) and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). In BPD, emotion dysregulation, hypersensitivity to interpersonal rejection/threat, increased rumination, increased negative urgency, aggression-related knowledge structures, and invalidation were either corroborated or emerged as psychological correlates of aggression, while reduced ambiguity sensitivity, hyposensit

Self-reported executive functioning competencies and lifetime aggression.

Neuropsychological research can be advanced through a better understanding of relationships between executive functioning (EF) behavioral competencies and the expression of aggressive behavior. While performance-based EF measures have been widely examined, links between self-report indices and practical real-life outcomes have not yet been established. Executive Functioning Index subscale scores in this sample (N = 579) were linked to trait hostility (Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire), aggression in the natural environment (Lifetime Acts of Violence Assessment), and conduct disorder symptom

Social cognition in Intermittent Explosive Disorder and aggression.

Social-emotional information processing (SEIP) was assessed in individuals with current DSM-5 Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED: n = 100) and in healthy (n = 100) and psychiatric (n = 100) controls using a recently developed and validated self-rated questionnaire. SEIP vignettes depicted both direct aggressive and relationally aggressive scenarios of a socially ambiguous nature and were followed by questions assessing subjects' reactions and judgments about the vignettes. IED subjects differed from both healthy and psychiatric controls in all SEIP components. While hostile attribution was h

Subjective anger and overt aggression in psychiatric outpatients.

BACKGROUND: The attention given to anger and aggression in psychiatric patients pales in comparison to the attention given to depression and anxiety. Most studies have focused on a limited number of psychiatric disorders, and results have been inconsistent. The present report from the Rhode Island Methods to Improve Diagnostic Assessment and Services (MIDAS) project sought to replicate and extend prior findings examining which psychiatric disorders and demographic characteristics were independently associated with elevated levels of anger and aggression. METHOD: 3800 individuals presenting to

Aggression on inpatient units: Clinical characteristics and consequences.

Aggression and violence are widespread in UK Mental Health Trusts, and are accompanied by negative psychological and physiological consequences for both staff and other patients. Patients who are younger, male, and have a history of substance use and psychosis diagnoses are more likely to display aggression; however, patient factors are not solely responsible for violence, and there are complex circumstances that lead to aggression. Indeed, patient-staff interactions lead to a sizeable portion of aggression and violence on inpatient units, thus they cannot be viewed without considering other f

Possible relationship between amino acids, aggression and psychopathy.

OBJECTIVE: Aggressive behaviour is associated with reduced serotonin metabolism in the brain, but there is not enough knowledge on potential changes of the serotonin precursor levels among violent offenders. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the relationships among the tendency of psychopathy, anger and the basic amino acids. METHODS: Fifty-two young adult male patients with antisocial personality disorder (APD) and 30 healthy men included the study. Serum amino acid levels were measured by HPLC method. Aggression questionnaire and Hare Psychopathology Scale were used for all participants.

Chronic neglect and aggression/delinquency: A longitudinal examination.

Neglect is the most common form of maltreatment in the United States, yet its impact on development remains understudied, especially for chronic neglect. Chronic neglect is also one of the most costly burdens on child welfare systems. This study examines the effects of chronic neglect, including two subtypes (Failure to Provide and Lack of Supervision) on adolescent aggression and delinquency using a diverse longitudinal sample of youth. Chronic neglect and chronic failure to provide (ages 0-12) predicted aggression/delinquency (age 14) even after controlling for the effects of other maltreatm

Verbal versus physical aggression in Intermittent Explosive Disorder.

Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) is the only adult psychiatric diagnosis for which pathological aggression is primary. DSM-IV criteria focused on physical aggression, but Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) allows for an IED diagnosis in the presence of frequent verbal aggression with or without concurrent physical aggression. It remains unclear how individuals with verbal aggression differ from those with physical aggression with respect to cognitive-affective deficits and psychosocial functioning. The current study compared individuals who met IED criteria with

Prolactin and aggression in women with fertility problems.

This study tested the hypothesis that women with higher prolactin feel more hostility, anger and aggression. A total of 66 women with moderate fertility problems were grouped into the 50% who had the highest and the 50% who had the lowest levels of prolactin. Levels of hostility, aggression and anger were compared. Women with higher prolactin levels did not report significantly increased hostility. After Bonferroni correction, women with lower prolactin showed non-significantly increased scores on two measures of state anger, and on a measure of trait temper. When comparing those with the high

The fate of aggression in maso-masochistic relationships.

This paper examines an underexplored dimension of interpersonal relating: the relationship formed between two individuals who relate to each other in masochistic ways. The common assumption is that a sadist forms an alliance with a masochist, and that a balance is struck between an individual who is "one up" and another who is "one down." However, relationships are frequently established between two people who both experience themselves as chronically "one down," each playing victim to the other's aggression. This paper explores disavowed aggression in this type of couple, the implications of

Agitation and aggression in people with Alzheimer's disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Agitation and aggression commonly arise in people with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementias. They are distressing for the individual and often confer risk to them and to others, as well as raising significant clinical challenges. This review outlines the current evidence for pharmacological and nonpharmacological approaches to the treatment of agitation and aggression in these patients. RECENT FINDINGS: There is a growing body of literature supporting the use of nonpharmacological approaches as well as the treatment of pain as a first-line management strategy prior
