Hunger drives aggression, making animals "hangry". Yet the underlying neural mechanism is unclear. Here, we identified a "hangry neuron" in the mushroom body of Drosophila that transforms hunger states into aggression intensity. This transformation is graded and nutrient-specific, precisely coupling internal needs to aggressive actions. Dopaminergic inputs to the hangry neuron play a critical role in this process by conveying the information about hunger states, and by bidirectionally modulating hangry neuron's excitability via Dop1R1 and Dop1R2 receptors, which activate intracellular cAMP and

BACKGROUND: Advanced papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) exhibits significant heterogeneity. Understanding the gene expression programs underlying tumor heterogeneity is crucial for improving diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
METHODS: We integrated single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and bulk RNA-seq data to explore transcriptional heterogeneity in PTC. Using consensus nonnegative matrix factorization (cNMF), we identified gene expression programs (GEPs) within malignant cells. A machine learning framework was applied to establish a lymph node metastasis (LNM) signature. Functional vali

INTRODUCTION: Attitudes toward risky driving behaviors are commonly evaluated through direct self-report measures. Nevertheless, these instruments have limitations, such as socially-desirable responding. This study examines the validity of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) as an indirect measure of attitudes towards risky driving. An IAT with "risky" vs. "safe" driving behaviors categories was evaluated.
METHOD: A sample of 100 participants (ranging from 18 to 70 years of age) completed the IAT and measures of attitudes, driving styles, personality traits, risk-taking (IOWA Gambling Task),

Aggression continues to be a problematic, ill-defined concept for most contemporary analysts. Questions about the nature and origin of aggression remain unanswered. On the one hand, aggression is conceived of as an instinctual drive; on the other, it is thought to originate as an instrument of reaction to external sources of frustration and environmental failures to meet developmental needs. Aggression has also been dichotomized as either the benign activity of assertiveness, or the darker destructive force of hostility, believed by many to arise from separate motivational systems. There is a

Oral malignant melanoma, which frequently invades the hard palate or maxillary bone, is extremely rare and has a poor prognosis. Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) is abundantly expressed in bone matrix and is highly expressed in malignant melanoma, inducing an aggressive phenotype. We examined the role of BMP signaling in the acquisition of an aggressive phenotype in melanoma cells in vitro and in vivo. In five cases, immunohistochemistry indicated the phosphorylation of Smad1/5 (p-Smad1/5) in the nuclei of melanoma cells. In the B16 mouse and A2058 human melanoma cell lines, BMP2, BMP4, or BMP

Infectious syndromes represent a monumental challenge in the management of immunocompromised patients, directly driving high rates of morbidity and critical mortality. This clinical cohort comprised oncological populations undergoing aggressive cytoreductive chemotherapy, end-stage renal disease patients dependent on specialized long-term dialysis access networks, and individuals undergoing treatment with advanced antiretroviral regimens. Because these individuals suffer from blunted or suppressed cellular immune mechanisms, standard structural imaging methodologies (such as standard digital r

Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive type of breast cancer unveiling negative expression on oestrogen receptors, progesterone receptors, and HER2. The anomalous activation of signalling pathways and specific types of mutations characterize the progression of TNBC. Protein-protein interaction in the tumour microenvironment plays a crucial role in tumour aggressiveness. Disrupting the signalling pathways that promote cell progression, migration, and survival opens up a promising avenue for targeting the aggressive form of TNBC. The present study emphasizes the molecular in

Hereditary leiomyomatosis and renal cell cancer is a recently described hereditary cancer syndrome in which affected individuals are predisposed to the development of leiomyomas of the skin and uterus. In addition, this clinical entity also can result in the development of biologically aggressive kidney cancer. Affected individuals harbour a germline mutation of the fumarate hydratase (FH) gene, which encodes an enzyme that catalyses conversion of fumarate to malate in the Kreb's cycle. Thus far, proposed mechanisms for carcinogeneis associated with this syndrome include aberrant apoptosis, ox

BACKGROUND: Although physicians in most provinces are mandated to report patients whose driving ability is impaired by illness, little is known about dementia-related factors associated with driving cessation. The purpose of our study was to explore factors that may affect the likelihood of driving cessation in a sample of elderly, community-dwelling patients with dementia.
METHODS: A 3-year prospective study, the Canadian Outcomes Study in Dementia (COSID) has enrolled 883 patients with mild-to-moderate dementia at 32 centres across Canada. Assessment tools included the Mini-Mental State Exa

Although there is a large research base on the psychological impacts of violent and prosocial visual media, there is little research addressing the impacts of violent and prosocial music, and which facets of the music have the greatest impact. Four experiments tested the impact of lyrics and/or musical tone on aggressive and prosocial behavior, and on underlying psychological processes, using purpose-built songs to avoid the effect of music-related confounds. In study one, where mildly aggressive, overtly aggressive and violent lyrics were compared to neutral lyrics, any level of lyrical aggre

This study explored the impact of adolescents' playing of racing and drive'em up games on their risky driving behavior. Participants were 354 adolescent boys and girls who took part in a longitudinal panel survey on video game playing and risk taking attitudes, intentions and behaviors. In line with cultivation theory and theory of planned behavior the results showed that (even after controlling for aggression and sensation seeking) video game playing during adolescence succeeded in predicting later risky driving behavior through adolescents' attitudes and intentions to exhibit this behavior i

Glioblastoma is the most common and aggressive primary brain tumor in adults, characterized by rapid proliferation, diffuse infiltration, and poor clinical outcomes despite multimodal therapy. A hallmark of GBM biology is its remarkable genomic (GI) and chromosomal instability (CIN), which act as fundamental engines of tumor evolution. These processes fuel extensive intratumoral heterogeneity, drive the emergence of therapy-resistant clones, and contribute to immune evasion and disease recurrence. GI arises from replication stress, oxidative damage, and impaired DNA damage response pathways, w

Tumor acidosis alters cancer cell metabolism and favors aggressive disease progression. Cancer cells in acidic environments increase lipid droplet accumulation and oxidative phosphorylation, which are characteristics of aggressive cancers. Here, we used live imaging, shotgun lipidomics and immunofluorescence analyses of mammary and pancreatic cancer cells to demonstrate that both acute acidosis and adaptation to acidic growth drive rapid uptake of fatty acids (FAs), which are converted to triacylglycerols and stored in lipid droplets. Consistent with being independent of de novo synthesis, tri

Neuropsychological research can be advanced through a better understanding of relationships between executive functioning (EF) behavioral competencies and the expression of aggressive behavior. While performance-based EF measures have been widely examined, links between self-report indices and practical real-life outcomes have not yet been established. Executive Functioning Index subscale scores in this sample (N = 579) were linked to trait hostility (Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire), aggression in the natural environment (Lifetime Acts of Violence Assessment), and conduct disorder symptom

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains a leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. Tumors carrying activating epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations initially respond to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), with Osimertinib representing the current standard of care. However, acquired resistance inevitably develops, involving both genetic and non-genetic mechanisms, the latter playing a major role in sustaining cellular plasticity and promoting tumor aggressiveness. Here, we show that Osimertinib-resistant H1975 cells acquire a more aggressive phenotype than their parental (Par)

Heparanase is an endoglucuronidase that cleaves heparan sulfate chains of proteoglycans. In many malignancies, high heparanase expression and activity correlate with an aggressive tumour phenotype. A major consequence of heparanase action in cancer is a robust up-regulation of growth factor expression and increased shedding of syndecan-1 (a transmembrane heparan sulfate proteoglycan). Substantial evidence indicates that heparanase and syndecan-1 work together to drive growth factor signalling and regulate cell behaviours that enhance tumour growth, dissemination, angiogenesis and osteolysis. The tumor microenvironment is a complex ecosystem where the extracellular matrix serves as a dynamic signaling hub and regulates tumorigenesis. Thrombospondin-2 (THBS2), a matricellular extracellular matrix protein, has traditionally been regarded as an inhibitor of angiogenesis. However, emerging evidence reveals a pleiotropic and paradoxical pro-tumorigenic role of THBS2 in several malignancies. THBS2 has been identified as a multifaceted regulator of critical mechanisms driving cancer progression including angiogenesis induction, vasculogenic mimicry, sustained proliferation, invasion, meta

Hepatoblastoma (HB) is the most common pediatric liver malignancy, with its significant heterogeneity complicating the identification of the most aggressive subtypes and the development of targeted therapies. In this study, we performed transcriptomic analysis of HB samples from the GEO database and identified three distinct molecular subtypes with varying prognostic outcomes. Among them, the proliferative subtype, characterized by enhanced proliferative capacity, poor prognosis, and an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment, was particularly notable. ACSL4 emerged as a critical biomarker of

Meningiomas are the most frequently occurring intracranial tumors. They are characterized by a broad spectrum of histopathologic appearance. Molecular alterations driving meningioma development, which affect the NF2 gene, are found in roughly 50% of patients. Rare genetic events in benign meningiomas are mutations in TRAF7, KLF4, AKT1, and SMO; all of these mutations are exclusive of NF2 alterations. Progression to a clinically aggressive meningioma is linked to inactivation of CDKN2A/B genes, and a plethora of signaling molecules have been described as activated in meningiomas, which supports
