Aggressive periodontitis is a rare condition that progresses rapidly but affects only a small percentage of population. Most of the cases are familial. The presence of supernumerary teeth is also rather rare and often familial. Therefore, a concomitant presentation of aggressive periodontitis and supernumerary teeth in an individual has generated a great interest among clinicians. Here, we report a rare nonsyndromic case of generalized aggressive periodontitis with multiple impacted supernumerary teeth.

The diagnosis of localized aggressive periodontitis includes first molar attachment loss as an obligatory criterion. This tooth-specific based diagnosis has never been questioned or tested previously. We present a rare case of aggressive periodontitis that developed during orthodontic treatment, which included extraction of right lower first molar and bodily movement of the second molar to the original first molar site. At the end of the orthodontic therapy, localized periodontal disease was diagnosed at the site of the lower left first molar and the second lower right molar that was now occup

BACKGROUND/AIM: Aggressive periodontitis comprises a group of rapidly progressive forms of periodontitis. Besides bacteria, a high level of subject susceptibility must be involved in the expression of disease. In the present study, we report the clinical, microbiological and genetic profile of a 14-individual family with aggressive periodontitis.
METHOD: PCR was utilized to detect pathogenic bacteria of affected sites. DNA was obtained from epithelial cells through a mouthwash with 3% glucose and scrapping of the oral mucosa. RFLP-PCR was used to analyze cytokine genetic polymorphisms.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal bacteria are known to invade the systemic circulation. Chronic low-level bacteremia and a systemic inflammatory response have been suggested as a pathogenetic link between periodontal disease and atherosclerosis. The purpose of this study was to examine the systemic effect of a non-surgical therapy on white blood cell count (WBC count) and differential blood count in smoking and non-smoking generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAP) patients.
METHODS: 27 adult periodontitis patients (13 smokers and 14 non-smokers) with previously untreated GAP were subjected to 3 sessi

BACKGROUND: Localized aggressive periodontitis (LAgP) is associated with neutrophil dysfunction including defective chemotaxis and reduced calcium influx factor activity. Nitric oxide (NO) and its enzyme, nitric oxide synthase (NOS), have been suggested to be involved in chemotaxis. Some reports, however, were unable to detect either NO or NOS in human neutrophils. In this study, we focused on NOS activity in LAgP neutrophils and examined the involvement of NOS in chemotaxis of normal neutrophils and NOS activity in neutrophils from normal subjects and patients with LAgP.
METHODS: Neutrophils

INTRODUCTION: Periodontal diseases, including chronic gingivitis, chronic periodontitis, and aggressive periodontitis, are driven by complex immune responses, with mast cells (MCs) playing a pivotal role through the release of mediators during degranulation. Although MC involvement in chronic periodontal conditions has been documented, its role in aggressive periodontitis and the relationship between MC degranulation and inflammation intensity remain poorly understood. This study aimed to quantify MCs and assess their degranulation in gingival tissues across healthy gingiva, chronic gingivitis

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is characterized by local inflammatory conditions in the periodontium, its severe form has been associated with elevated systemic inflammatory markers. However, the long-term effects of periodontal inflammation control on systemic inflammatory markers are unclear.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the long-term effects of periodontal therapy on the levels of peripheral venous blood inflammatory markers in patients with generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAgP), all of whom were now diagnosed as Stage III or IV Grade C periodontitis.

To identify the genetic risk factors for aggressive periodontitis (AgP), it is important to understand the progression and pathogenesis of AgP. The purpose of this review was to summarize the genetic risk factors for AgP identified through a case-control genomewide association study (GWAS) and replication study. The initial studies to identify novel AgP risk factors were potentially biased because they relied on previous studies. To overcome this kind of issue, an unbiased GWAS strategy was introduced to identify genetic risk factors for various diseases. Currently, three genes glycosyltransfe

INTRODUCTION: This case series illustrates the use of the new classification system of periodontal diseases and conditions. This case series highlights how the assessment of the rate of progression of periodontal disease, that is, grading, allows for the identification of individual patients, who are more likely to require active periodontal treatment intervention to prevent onset of disease, need long-term disease control, or referral to a periodontist.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old female presents with slight gingival inflammation. However, exploration into indirect evidence of disease p

A combined periodontal and orthodontic treatment demands a detailed evaluation in both specialties, particularly when the periodontium is reduced. This is especially true for adult patients, but young patients can also suffer from advanced periodontitis. This article describes combined periodontal and orthodontic therapy in a young patient with severe localized and aggressive periodontitis, tooth crown abnormalities, and missing maxillary second premolars. Periodontal treatment was carried out. Once attachment gain and bone stability were confirmed, orthodontic therapy commenced. It lasted 32

Neutrophils play a major role in the host response against invading periodontopathogenic microorganisms. Localized aggressive periodontitis (LAgP) is associated with various functional abnormalities of neutrophils. Based on the recent findings, LAgP neutrophils are not "hypofunctional" or "deficient." They are "hyperfunctional," and their amplified activity is responsible for the tissue destruction in periodontal disease. Several signal transduction abnormalities are associated with elevated neutrophil function in LAgP. There is a strong correlation between defective chemotaxis and decreased i

BACKGROUND: Interleukin-21 (IL-21) has both anti- and pro-inflammatory roles associated with chronic inflammation. It causes tissue destruction by increasing pro-inflammatory cytokines and curbs the activity of certain immune cells that evoke an anti-inflammatory role.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare IL-21 levels in gingival crevicular fluid among patients with generalized chronic periodontitis (GCP), aggressive periodontitis, and healthy gingiva (HG) and to correlate IL-21 levels with clinical parameters.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional case-control study, 60 subjects were

BACKGROUND: Proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines play a key role in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases. Secretion of bioactive IL-35 has been described by T regulatory cells (T(regs)) and is required for their maximal suppressive activity. T(regs) are involved in the modulation of local immune response in chronic periodontitis patients.
OBJECTIVE: Hence, the present study was aimed to investigate the expression of IL-35 mRNA in chronic periodontitis and aggressive periodontitis patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was carried out in 60 subjects, which included

Periodontitis is a kind of infectious disease initiated by colonization of subgingival periodontal pathogens, which cause destruction of tooth-supporting tissues, and is a predominant threat to oral health as the most common cause of loss of teeth. The aim of this pilot study was to characterize the subgingival bacterial biodiversity of periodontal pockets with different probing depths in patients with different forms of periodontitis. Twenty-one subgingival plaque samples were collected from three patients with chronic periodontitis (ChP), three patients with aggressive periodontitis (AgP) an
