Effects of Aging on the Subcortical Encoding of Stop Consonants.

Purpose The main purpose of this study was to evaluate aging effects on the predominantly subcortical (brainstem) encoding of the second-formant frequency transition, an essential acoustic cue for perceiving place of articulation. Method Synthetic consonant-vowel syllables varying in second-formant onset frequency (i.e., /ba/, /da/, and /ga/ stimuli) were used to elicit speech-evoked auditory brainstem responses (speech-ABRs) in 16 young adults (M age = 21 years) and 11 older adults (M age = 59 years). Repeated-measures mixed-model analyses of variance were performed on the latencies and ampli

A User-Centered Design Approach to Developing Smart Speaker Learning Tools for Low-Income Older Adults: The VERIWell Study Protocol.

PURPOSE: Smart speakers can support aging in place, yet older adults from low-income communities face barriers to adoption due to limited training and instructional materials. The current article outlines a user-centered design approach to developing and evaluating tailored video tutorials and print materials that teach smart speaker functions to low-income older adults in subsidized housing. METHOD: The four-phase study involved: Phase 1, needs assessment through focus groups with residents (n = 5) and housing staff (n = 3); Phase 2, prototype development with resident co-designers (n = 2);

Exploring successful implementation of occupational therapy led home fall-hazard reduction interventions.

INTRODUCTION: Falls among older adults are a major cause of death, injury, and loss of independence. High-certainty evidence demonstrates that comprehensive, occupational therapy-led home fall-hazard reduction interventions can reduce the number of falls among older adults at high risk. Despite this evidence, these interventions are not routinely implemented in practice. Current literature provides limited insight into the factors that influence successful implementation of home fall-hazard reduction interventions. This study seeks to address the following research question: 'What influences t

Exploring the impact of metformin on testicular aging in Syrian hamsters.

Biochemical and molecular mechanisms associated with testicular aging are still poorly understood. Here, using the Syrian hamster as a natural model of aging, we observed a disturbed spermatogenesis with reduction of the testicular weight and the gonadosomatic index, altered histology including tubular wall fibrosis, increased collagen deposition, and diminished steroidogenesis in testes of aged animals. These changes took place in parallel with an increase in the levels of inflammatory and oxidative stress markers and a reduction in the cell proliferative, survival, DNA repair, and autophagic

Sharing common measures of the environment across continents: challenges and opportunities for global studies of aging.

OBJECTIVES: Environmental exposures are modifiable risk factors for accelerated aging, but research is frequently limited to individual countries due to inconsistent exposure assessment. Cross-national data provide broader perspectives but add methodological complexities. This study evaluated spatial and temporal patterns of 5 environmental measures assigned to older adult pseudopopulations in 8 countries to highlight opportunities and challenges for aging epidemiologic studies. METHODS: Through the Gateway to Global Aging Data project, we harmonized measures of air pollution (PM2.5, NO2, O3)

Sounds of silence--coping with hearing loss and loneliness.

The vast majority of people will suffer presbycusis during the aging process. This hearing loss has potential social consequences, which place these individuals at risk for loneliness. Nurses need to encourage thorough audiological examination and follow through on recommendations to improve hearing. The use of hearing aids needs to be encouraged. A suggested model of interaction among variables influencing loneliness identifies areas amenable to nursing intervention. Frequency of significant interaction and motivation to engage in interactions represent two important variables that influence

Evaluation of color stability, wear, and fracture resistance of preformed Bioflx and zirconia crowns: An in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: The ideal crowns for primary teeth should be esthetic, durable, and easy to place. Preformed zirconia crowns, although the most commonly used, esthetically pleasing, require significant tooth reduction, lack flexibility and adjustability, and cause wear of opposing teeth. Recently, new high-strength, medical-grade resin polymer preformed crowns have been introduced, promising to address these limitations. AIM: This in vitro study aimed to evaluate and compare the color stability, wear, and fracture resistance of newly introduced resin polymer crowns (Bioflx) with preformed zirconi

Andean voices on ageing well: a biographical study with older Aymara adults.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Scarce attempts have been made to meet the challenge of understanding the features of successful indigenous ageing in Latin America and the Caribbean. This study examines the dimensions underpinning the concept of Ageing Well among the Aymara people, based on the following questions: What conception do older Aymara adults have of Ageing Well? What are its central elements? How does Ageing Well juxtapose with Living Well? RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This study involved the participation of 36 older Aymara adults (aged from 62 to 97 years), with equal numbers of men

[Successful aging: what can neurology and geriatrics contribute?].

The relative proportion of elderly persons in Western societies is rapidly growing, leading to an increasing frequency of age-related neurological diseases (e.g. dementia) and functional impairments (e.g. immobility). This article argues that this development should prompt a new focus in medical care. The key questions should not only be how can we improve treatment of age-related disorders but also how can we prevent age-related disorders in the first place or at least substantially delay their onset? These questions touch on an even more profound question: how can successful aging be accompl

In Situ Reprogramming of Neurons and Glia - A Risk in Altering Memory and Personality?

The recent emergence of reprogramming technologies to convert brain cell types or epigenetically alter neurons and neural progenitors in vivo and in situ hold significant promises in brain repair and neuronal aging reversal. However, given the significant epigenetic and transcriptomic changes to components of the existing neuronal cells and network, we question if these reprogramming technology might inadvertently alter or erase memory engrams, conceivably resulting in changes in narrative identity or personality. We suggest that the nature of these alterations might be less predictable compar

Study protocol of the Hungarian Longitudinal Study of Healthy Brain Aging (HuBA).

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Neurocognitive aging and the associated brain diseases impose a major social and economic burden. Therefore, substantial efforts have been put into revealing the lifestyle, the neurobiological and the genetic underpinnings of healthy neurocognitive aging. However, these studies take place almost exclusively in a limited number of highly-developed countries. Thus, it is an important open question to what extent their findings may generalize to neurocognitive aging in other, not yet investigated regions. The purpose of the Hungarian Longitudinal Study of Healthy Brain Agi

Time trends in susceptibility to scams in community-dwelling older adults.

This study examined the time trends of susceptibility to scams across 4 birth cohorts in the United States that span between 1925 and 1944. Data came from community-dwelling older adults without dementia participating in an epidemiologic cohort study of aging and dementia. A 5-item instrument for scam susceptibility assessed participants' scam-related behaviors and perceptions, such as how they manage phone calls from telemarketers, and whether they agree with claims that are unrealistically good. To capture time trends, age- and education-standardized mean scam susceptibility score was comput

"I value it, but someone should do it": fitness staff's perspectives on task-oriented resistance exercise in retirement communities.

BACKGROUND: Many older adults relocate to retirement communities to age in place, particularly when facing health declines or disability. Task-oriented resistance exercise, which integrates functional daily activities into exercise, has shown benefits in reducing late-life disability. However, little is known about how such programs can be embedded within the existing fitness infrastructure of retirement communities to support residents who are at risk of disability. This study explored fitness staff's perspectives on the compatibility and complexity of implementing a task-oriented exercise pr

Multifactorial and multiple component interventions for preventing falls in older people living in the community.

RATIONALE: Multifactorial fall prevention interventions are those where intervention components are tailored to each person's individual fall risk factor profile. Multiple component interventions provide the same components to everyone. The evidence on the effects of these interventions is inconclusive. This review updates one published on the Cochrane Library in 2018. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of multifactorial and multiple component fall prevention interventions compared to usual care or attention control, exercise, and falls prevention advice or education in community-dwelling olde

Obesity indicators and risk of mortality and functional health outcomes in Asian community-dwelling older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Obesity in older adults is associated with adverse health outcomes, and its coexistence with sarcopenia may accelerate these risks. While diagnostic criteria for sarcopenic obesity were recently proposed in Europe, the applicability of obesity indicators and cutoffs for Asian older adults remains unclear. We aimed to identify optimal obesity indicators and cutoffs for adverse health outcomes in Asian older adults. Five electronic databases were searched from inception to January 2025. Pooled relative risks (RRs) with 95 %CI were calculated using random-effects model. Fifty-eight studies were i

Dissecting the contribution of human chromosome 21 syntenic regions to recognition memory processes in adult and aged mouse models of Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Trisomy of human chromosome 21 (Hsa21) results in a constellation of features known as Down syndrome (DS), the most common genetic form of intellectual disability. Hsa21 is orthologous to three regions in the mouse genome on mouse chromosome 16 (Mmu16), Mmu17 and Mmu10. We investigated genotype-phenotype relationships by assessing the contribution of these three regions to memory function and age-dependent cognitive decline, using three mouse models of DS, Dp1Tyb, Dp(17)3Yey, Dp(10)2Yey, that carry an extra copy of the Hsa21-orthologues on Mmu16, Mmu17 and Mmu10, respectively.
