Designing a longitudinal cohort study of gambling in Alberta: rationale, methods, and challenges.

Longitudinal research on the determinants of gambling behavior is sparse. This article briefly reviews the previous seventeen longitudinally designed studies, focusing on the methodology for each study. This is followed by a description of our ongoing longitudinal study entitled the Leisure, Lifestyle, and Lifecycle Project (LLLP). Participants for the LLLP were recruited from four locations in Alberta, Canada, including both rural and urban populations. In the LLLP most participants were recruited using random digit dialing (RDD), with 1808 participants from 5 age cohorts at baseline: 13-15,

Prevalence of sucking and chewing lice on cattle entering feedlots in southern Alberta.

Beef calves from 2 sources entering southern Alberta feedlots in the winters of 1997-98 and 1998-99, were surveyed for the presence of lice. A random sample of multiple source (MS), that is, auction market-derived, calves entering commercial feedlots and single source (SS) calves entering a backgrounding feedlot were examined for the presence of lice at entry to the feedlot. A standardized examination, which involved hair-part examination of 8 louse predilection sites, was conducted on each selected calf to determine prevalence and intensity of infestation. The long-nosed sucking louse, Linogn

Blastomycosis: report of three cases from Alberta with a review of Canadian cases.

Approximately 120 cases of blastomycosis have been reported from Canada to-date. The great majority of these occurred in the Eastern provinces. Since 1970, three cases of blastomycosis have been seen in Alberta. The first case, with meningeal and pulmonary involvements, was diagnosed at post-mortem. The second case was that of a 75-year-old male with a history of pancytopenia, aortic arteriosclerosis, exposure to mercury, and fever. KOH and periodic-acid schiff (PAS) stained smears of the lung tissue, received after autopsy, showed numerous budding yeast cells of Blastomyces dermatitidis along

Reconsidering the Alberta study of the closure of the Red Deer supervised consumption site.

Supervised consumption sites (SCS) are interventions supported by decades of evidence and yet remain subject to considerable politicization. Recently, researchers from Alberta, Canada published a study in the journal Addiction that sought to assess the impacts of the closure of a SCS in Red Deer, Alberta. The study authors reported that the closure had no negative health impacts while increasing uptake of opioid agonist treatments among former clients. However, the study suffers from numerous methodological shortcomings that call the validity of the findings into question, including but not li

Trends in the Epidemiology and Treatment of Pediatric-Onset Multiple Sclerosis in Alberta, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Fingolimod became the first disease-modifying therapy approved by Health Canada for pediatric multiple sclerosis in 2018, but the impact of that approval on treatment patterns in Canada is unknown. The aim of this study was to describe trends in the epidemiology and treatment of pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis in Alberta, Canada. METHODS: This study entailed a retrospective review of administrative health databases using 2 case definitions of multiple sclerosis. Those <19 years of age at a date of diagnosis between January 1, 2011, and December 31, 2020, were included. Incidenc

An unusual case of Brugia sp. infection in a dog from Alberta, Canada.

Brugia is a vector-transmitted nematode that is commonly known for its zoonotic significance of causing lymphatic filariasis in Asia and Oceanic regions of the world. In addition to public health concerns, Brugia species have been known to infect domestic animals, including dogs and cats. However, information is scarce regarding genus Brugia in North America, and rare infections have been noted in domestic cats, humans, and other wild mammals. Herein, we document the first reported case of a Brugia species infection in a dog from North America and the first molecular characterization of the sp

Health services restructuring in Alberta and the 2009 pandemic influenza-An untimely concurrence.

In the last 12 years, every Canadian province and territory has undertaken significant health services restructuring, with the pace of change accelerating recently. When the H1N1 Pandemic Influenza (PI) hit Alberta in the spring of 2009, the province had just begun a restructuring of health services of a scale unprecedented in Canada. The new province-wide entity, Alberta Health Services (AHS), was faced with mounting an effective response to a global communicable disease outbreak during a time of great organizational flux. In this retrospective, the authors reflect on challenges and opportuni

Prevalence of autoimmune inflammatory myopathy in the first nations population of Alberta, Canada.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the population-based prevalence of autoimmune inflammatory myopathy (AIM) in Alberta, Canada, with a specific focus on rates in the First Nations population. METHODS: Physician billing claims and hospitalization data for the province of Alberta (1994-2007) were used to estimate the probability of having AIM (i.e., polymyositis or dermatomyositis) based on 3 case definitions. A latent class Bayesian hierarchical regression model was employed to account for the imperfect sensitivity and specificity of billing and hospitalization data in case ascertainment. We accounted fo

Seasonality and clinical features of human metapneumovirus infection in children in Northern Alberta.

Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) causes respiratory tract infections in all age groups. The characteristics of pediatric hMPV infection in Northern Alberta have not been studied. The objectives of this study were to determine the seasonality of pediatric hMPV infections over a 13-month period, the genetic relationship of hMPV isolates to hMPV detected in other parts of Canada, and the burden of illness and possible risk factors for pediatric hMPV hospitalization. Detection of hMPV by polymerase chain reaction was performed on nasopharyngeal specimens collected from outpatients and inpatients at th

The impact of mandatory versus voluntary participation in the Alberta ignition interlock program.

Research has demonstrated that participation in an interlock program significantly reduces the likelihood of subsequent driving while intoxicated (DWI) convictions at least so long as the interlock device is installed in the vehicle. Despite the growing number of jurisdictions that allow interlock programs and the demonstrated success of these programs, the proportion of DWI offenders who actually have the device installed is minimal. In an effort to increase the proportion of offenders using interlocks, some jurisdictions require offenders to install an interlock as a condition of license rei

Investigation of an anthrax outbreak in Alberta in 1999 using a geographic information system.

A Geographic Information System was used to document an anthrax outbreak in Alberta in 1999 and to describe the physical and environmental conditions of the area. The majority of infected farms were located on poorly drained organic soils. Regulatory agencies should consider adopting this tool for animal disease outbreak investigations.

The Alberta Interlock Program: the evaluation of a province-wide program on DUI recidivism.

AIMS: This study was designed to determine the efficacy of alcohol safety interlocks in reducing recidivism among first and second driving-under-the-influence (DUI) offenders. It also evaluates the overall effectiveness of interlock programs where typically only a small portion of DUI offenders elect to install interlocks. DESIGN: The driving records of DUI offenders participating in interlock programs for 6 months for first offenders and 2 years for second offenders were compared with similar offenders who chose not to participate. SETTING: A province-wide program in Alberta, Canada. PARTI

The Alberta Hereditary Diseases Program: a regional model for delivery of genetic services.

Genetic counselling and related services are generally provided at major university medical centres because they are very specialized. The need for rurally based genetic services prompted the inclusion of an outreached program in the Alberta Hereditary Diseases Program (AHDP), which was established in 1979; the AHDP was designed to provide services to the entire province through two regional centres and seven outreach clinics. There is a community health nurse in almost every health unit whose duties are either totally or partially devoted to the AHDP; thus, genetic help and information are as

The 'Be Prepared' programme: Enhancing local emergency preparedness through public education in Alberta.

The AEMA, within the Government of Alberta, Canada, is the coordinating agency for emergency management across the province. The Be Prepared programme, within the AEMA, aims to educate individuals, households and communities on how to recognise risks, improve risk literacy and make preparedness a part of daily life. The rising frequency and severity of disasters, which can put lives at risk and disrupt day-to-day life, necessitates increased risk literacy, hazard understanding and disaster risk reduction actions among all sectors of society. Subsequent Primary Neoplasms and Mortality Among Survivors of Childhood Cancer in Alberta, Canada.

Background: While research shows childhood cancer survivors experience elevated subsequent primary neoplasm (SPN) and premature mortality risks, few studies have included contemporary survivors. Methods: This study quantifies the risk of SPNs and mortality among modern survivors of childhood cancer. Utilizing a retrospective, population-based cohort of individuals diagnosed with cancer before the age of 18 in Alberta, Canada (2001-2018), we evaluated their risks of SPNs and mortality compared to the general population in Alberta, overall and after 5-year survival, using standardized mortality

Province of Alberta Jurisdictional Standardized Operating Protocol (SOP) for Screening Brain Vascular Malformations.

OBJECTIVE: Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder leading to vascular malformations in different organ systems. Approximately 10% of patients with HHT have brain vascular malformations (BVMs). Due to the negative health consequences related to BVMs, screening with MRI is recommended. There are no health jurisdictional standards for medical imaging protocols in North America or elsewhere. The objective of this project is to adopt a provincial standardized operating protocol (SOP) to improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce inappropriate imaging in pa
