A systematic review with meta-analysis on the relation between acute stress, alcohol consumption and cortisol levels in individuals with a personal, familial or no alcohol use disorder.

The self-medication hypothesis posits that alcohol is consumed to cope with stress, but corresponding evidence (incl. its impact on physiological stress markers) is heterogeneous. Thus, this systematic review examined the relationship between acute stress, acute alcohol consumption, and cortisol levels in individuals with varying alcohol use disorder (AUD) statuses. Following PRISMA guidelines, records from PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, and PsycInfo up to 16/05/2025 were analysed. We included 53 experimental and 31 observational studies that reported alcohol consumption volume after stress v

COVID-19 patients with documented alcohol use disorder or alcohol-related complications are more likely to be hospitalized and have higher all-cause mortality.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has affected every country globally, with hundreds of millions of people infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and over 6 million deaths to date. It is unknown how alcohol use disorder (AUD) affects the severity and mortality of COVID-19. AUD is known to increase the severity and mortality of bacterial pneumonia and the risk of developing acute respiratory distress syndrome. Our objective is to determine whether individuals with AUD have increased severity and mortality from COVID-19. METHODS: We utilized a retrospective cohort study of inpatients

Prescription for antidepressant in reducing future alcohol-related readmission in patients suffering from depression and alcohol use disorder: a retrospective medical record review.

BACKGROUND: Patients suffering from major depressive disorder are more likely to suffer from alcohol use disorder. The data is inconclusive for the effectiveness of antidepressant treatment of patients suffering from both illnesses in regards to improving sobriety and reducing alcohol-related healthcare expenses such as hospitalizations. The objective of this study is to determine if a new prescription of an antidepressant upon inpatient discharge is associated with a reduction in the number of future acute alcohol-related hospital readmissions to the same institution in patients suffering fro

Alcohol use disorder symptoms and risk-taking behavior as predictors of alcohol-related medical events among young adults treated in emergency departments.

BACKGROUND: Studies of alcohol-positive patients in emergency departments are not clear on the relationship between alcohol use disorder (AUD) symptoms and risk for injury. METHOD: Two-hundred three young adults (118 males (58%); mean age = 19.4 years) who were treated in two Level-1 emergency departments (ED) received comprehensive psychiatric interviews and completed the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and the Cognitive Appraisal of Risky Events (CARE). RESULTS: Males diagnosed with the AUD symptom of "drinking more or over a longer period than intended" are at greatest r

The experience of physiological and psychosocial alcohol-related harms across adolescence and its association with alcohol use disorder in early adulthood: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Different forms of alcohol-related harm (e.g., hangovers, fighting) may confer differential risk of clinically relevant alcohol problems. We examine: (i) patterns of transition in experiencing alcohol-related harms across adolescence; (ii) whether factors in early adolescence predict transition patterns; and (iii) whether transition patterns predict later alcohol use disorder (AUD) symptoms. METHODS: We used a longitudinal Australian cohort (n = 1828) to model latent class transition patterns of alcohol-related harms across three timepoints (Mage  = 13.9, 16.8, 18.8 years). Regres

Quality of life and risk of psychiatric disorders among regular users of alcohol, nicotine, and cannabis: An analysis of the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC).

Research is limited on the effects of regular substance use on mental health-related outcomes. We used a large nationally representative survey to examine current and future quality of life and risk of psychiatric disorders among past-year regular (weekly) users of alcohol, nicotine, and cannabis. Data on psychiatric disorders and quality of life from two waves (Wave 1 N = 43,093, Wave 2 N = 34,653) of the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC) were used to test study aims. In cross-sectional analyses, regular nicotine and cannabis use were associated with h

Experienced Stigma Related to Common Mental Illness and Alcohol Use Disorder in Rural Uganda: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Stigma remains a major barrier to mental health care in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), yet little is known about how stigma operates for common mental illnesses (CMIs) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) in rural Uganda. METHODS: We conducted 80 in-depth interviews (IDIs) with individuals and family members affected by CMIs (n=34) or AUD (n=46) in Buyende District, Uganda. Interviews were analyzed inductively using the framework method to identify cross-cutting themes. RESULTS: Three interlocking themes emerged: Internal Dysphoria, Community Dynamics, and Family Burden. Int

Association of Stress-Related Genetic Polymorphisms and Stressful Life Events With Alcohol Use Disorder in a Brazilian Population.

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a multifactorial condition shaped by genetic predispositions and neurophysiological, behavioural, and environmental factors. Chronic stress and trauma are key drivers of harmful alcohol use. This study aimed to investigate, in a Brazilian admixed population, the associations and interactions between genetic variants related to the CRFergic, noradrenergic, and glucocorticoid receptor systems and exposure to childhood and adulthood stressors, as well as perceived stress, in individuals with and without AUD. We evaluated 227 inpatients with AUD and 174 controls. Alco

Relating Functional Connectivity and Alcohol Use Disorder: A Systematic Review and Derivation of Relevance Maps for Regions and Connections.

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), a prevalent and potentially severe psychiatric condition, is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. This systematic review investigates the relationship between AUD and resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) derived from functional magnetic resonance imaging data. Following the PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive search yielded 248 papers, and a screening process identified 39 studies with 73 relevant analyses. Using the automated anatomical labeling atlas for whole-brain parcellation, relevance maps were generated to quantify associations betwee

Correlational and causal modeling of alcohol-related symptoms and internalizing disorder status: Further elucidation of a harm paradox.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with internalizing (anxiety and depressive) disorder (INTD) suffer from an alcohol-related "harm paradox"; that is, they experience more alcohol-related symptoms in aggregate than do others who drink at the same level. Here, we extend this earlier finding by examining the association of INTD with a wide range of individual alcohol-related symptoms. METHODS: The study sample included respondents in the NESARC Wave 3 who reported having consumed alcohol in the past year (N = 24,485). We used logistic regression analysis to identify the association between INTD and risk f

Attenuated cerebral blood flow in frontolimbic and insular cortices in Alcohol Use Disorder: Relation to working memory.

Chronic, excessive alcohol consumption is associated with cerebrovascular hypoperfusion, which has the potential to interfere with cognitive processes. Magnetic resonance pulsed continuous arterial spin labeling (PCASL) provides a noninvasive approach for measuring regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) and was used to study 24 men and women with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) and 20 age- and sex-matched controls. Two analysis approaches tested group differences: a data-driven, regionally-free method to test for group differences on a voxel-by-voxel basis and a region of interest (ROI) approach, which

Latent classes of lifetime drug use disorder in national epidemiological survey on alcohol and related conditions - III.

AIMS/BACKGROUND: People diagnosed with multiple drug use disorders are high-risk subpopulations, but changes in diagnostic classification and drug use prevalence mean patterning of drug use disorders has changed in the past decade. We analyzed comorbidity patterns of lifetime drug use disorder in a general population sample. DESIGN: Using latent class analysis, we derived lifetime drug use disorder classes based on dichotomous indicators of sedative, cannabis, opioid, cocaine, stimulant, hallucinogen, inhalant/solvent, club drug, heroin, and other drug use disorders in the National Epidemiolo

COVID-19-related role disruption and alcohol use disorder risk among adults in South Korea.

This cross-sectional study examined whether COVID-19-related disruption of occupational, social/leisure, and family roles was associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD) risk among adults in South Korea. We analyzed data from 936 adults aged 20-69 years who participated in the 2022 Chungnam Provincial Mental Health Survey. COVID-19-related disruption was assessed across three role domains and categorized as low, moderate, or high. AUD risk was defined using the Korean version of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate adjusted odds r
